Fire Extinguisher Recommendations please.

We have a pair of JE-50 Firesticks which are almost at their 'use by' date.
However hopefully they will remain unused, and I'm surer like most thinks they last a lot longer than the 'use by' date.
(Like the famous lettice lasted longer than Liz Truss!)

It would appear that JE-50's are no longer manufactured, as all the ones I can see for sale have expiry dates in 2025.

So what would the hive mind suggest is the best replacement for a pair of general use fire sticks, with holders, that could be dealing with anything from a cooking fire to an engine fire.

When we did fire safety training at work (ICI) the fire officers always said, only attempt to fight the fire if you exit is clear, otherwise just exit ASAP.
I saw a T4 catch fire and the most frightening thing was how quickly the fire developed. (The whole incident was caught on the owner's CCTV.)
The next most frightening thing was how many people walked past it, very closely, when it had an obvious fire. Considering all the usual combustibles, plus gas, on a van, there's no way I'd have walked past on the pavement it was parked against!

The fire brigade arrived very quickly, but the van was pretty much destroyed.

Like you, BusyBuilder I've also done fire training and it was all about enabling people to escape, with secondary attention to trying to minimise damage. That said, someone from our Owner's Group had a narrow escape when she lit a camping gas stove on the worktop in her van. A tiny gas leak meant a big WHOOSH of flame, a scorched worktop and a shaken user. But because she had in this case a fire blanket to hand it was all dealt with and put out immediately and what could have been an extremely nasty situation was in the main averted. I have Fire Sticks (cab and habitation area) and a fire blanket in my van.

I bumped into the local fire service chap this afternoon, he was checking out our local Perrins Centre (run by council) fire safety. I asked him about these fire sticks, his opinion was they would not use or recommend these, and would only recommend a 3 ply blanket (NOT the cheapo single ply type) and a fire extinguisher. I asked him about water mist and he also said no good on chip pans.

But who has a chip pan these days ? especially in a motorhome ??

Yes Firetool the previous sellers appear to have gone out of business but these ones are still made by Westpeace & still sold as such in far east. I checked the expiry date with the seller as 6/29. It has just arrived and it definitely marked Man 06 2024 Exp 06 2029.

It doesn't compare with the FSS which has a discharge time of 50 or 100 seconds.

Discharge time of " no more than 12 seconds"........ "Suitable for small 0.1m^2 pan fire", as below:

Discharge time is no more than 12 seconds. The design is based on BS 6165:2002 (Specification for small disposable fire extinguishers of the aerosol type) and UL 711a (Fire test method for portable hand-held extinguishers intended for use on residential cooking equipment), and it is designed for small fires only – for example to extinguish a 0.1 m2 pan fire. CE and RINA approved

We looked at the Fire Safety Stick at Malvern. They don't have British approval. They have plenty from other countries approving.

We have a fire extinguish primarily for the engine. Inside the van, we have two long fire blankets, one by the kitchen/door and one at the rear. We decided to stay as we are.

I can’t make out what type of extinguisher it is, powder, water mist, gas? I would also want to know which UK classes of fire it was certified for.

I bought this fire blanket from this shower of sh1te. Advertised and sold as 3 ply.

It's only single ply, I've been in touch with them and they insist it's 3 ply, I suggested they inspect one and see for themselves, then check with their Chinese suppliers, but they weren't interested in that. So will raise a dispute through ebay.

But what really pisses me off is the fact they are selling safety equipment that could be the difference between life and death or serious injury. I have to wait 7 days for ebay, but will probably send to trading standards anyway.

I'll find a local seller instead.
