MH
Fiat ducato
Fiat Ducato 2004, 2.8. Turned off engine then wouldn't start. No been a non runner for 4 months. Various mechanics with different ideas so far had
Cam belt changed
New Cam sensor
New Crank shaft sensor
Injectors checked
Ecu checked
Keys checked
New fuse box and relays changed
Rail pressure sensor cleaned
Diesel pressure checked.
Run for a few seconds with easy start
Any simular problems getting desperate.

Shut off solenoid on pump?
That was our problem Gus on an older 2.8TDi, ie, the immobiliser on the fuel pump played up at Narbonne Plage, and she just wouldn't start.
We were recovered to a Fiat agent, and had it all reset.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Just had the same problem and added a recent thread. Our MH was recovered to Fiat dealer.

We had a new Body Control Module fitted.
Fuel tank emptied and refilled.
Injectors removed and cleaned
Once the above done, the MH started and no problems since.

I initially thought there was an issue with the immobiliser.

Thanks for all the replies I guess it's a case of going through the suggestions above. It's had a fuel rail pressure test which was okay.

Can hear a pump when ignition turned on

to state the obvious a diesel needs:- air, compression and injected fuel to run,

the fact that it runs on easy start suggests to me that no fuel is getting from the pump to the injectors.

Yes I agree it's a fuel problem, fuel pressure check showed fuel getting through to injectors, injectors were removed and checked with a diesel specialist company who said no problem

Have none of the garages read the error codes. Multiecuscsn will show ECU codes for the X244 2.8l.
The injectors aren't operating so a sensor is kaput somewhere

that does not make any sense;
if it runs on easy start and there is fuel to the injectors are they are operating correctly then it should run.

Injectors aren't being opened by the ECU so the engine won't run.

The ECU went to specialists who said it was okay but he recommended that the factory immobiliser was disarmed

You can't really read much into individual components working. As a test it would defo be worth turning off the immobiliser but this needs to be done with MES or similar if it's even possible and only as a short term test.

How did the “ specialist “ test the ecu?
On or off the vehicle?

It seems that you have had various “specialist “ look at this and either the fault finding is not joined up or they are not looking for the same fault.

You may have parted with your cash for various checks but have you actually asked any of them to fix the fault.
If you have and they can’t do it I suggest you change your specialists

Non technical attempt at a solution.
Key into ignition
Turn key to get instrument lights on. DO NOT!!! attempt to start.
Note Padlock, (Immobiliser) @ about 7o'clock on instrument panel.

Turn Ignition OFF and IMMEDIATELY turn back on.
Watch for Padlock. See if it initially illuminates and then goes out.

If it does, Turn key further and attempt to start.

Immobiliser.
On older vans it simply turns fuel pump off. You can turn the engine over forever but it won't start.

Won’t that be the lift pump in the tank? High pressure pump works when engine is cranked or is running.

But he also said the fuel rail pressure checked out ok, so it's whatever triggers the injectors to fire that's the issue ?

I was going to suggest this.
A decent diesel engineer would put an oscilloscope across the injectors to check that they are being triggered.

It sounds like the garage he uses has just fired the parts cannon at it without actually doing proper diagnostics sadly :(

Faced with the same problems last August. Coded contact key was not "clearing" itself.
Use provided spare key.

I do not know if the X244 is the same , but on the X250 series the crash sensor is linked into the engine management system , if it is the same, and as has been suggested , could be worth checking out.
