Fiat Ducato Fuel Filter Failure

Thanks Andy.

Yes but they only leak after being serviced (badly)

For what these cost on ebay compared to what a Fiat dealer will charge it is sensible to carry a spare for the future as vehicle recovery is a much more expensive situation. These can be replaced in 10 mins by anyone who knows how to do it and without any tools. So even if you call the AA or RAC I imagine most of their operatives will have a clue (one would hope)

Had this happen today on the way home from Chester. Stopped for fuel just off the M40 and when we drove away from the pumps a warning sign showed on the dash. Pulled over in the air pump bay and dismayed to see fuel pouring out from under. Realised this was from the filter housing but couldn't make out exactly where from. I couldn't move the top with my hand so gently tapped the top ring around with a screwdriver and a hefty pair of pliers as a hammer. I was amazed but it worked! Got us the 120mls home from there all the while praying the light wouldn't come back on.
I guess I will be in touch with the eBay sellers tomorrow hoping they can get me a replacement plus spare and torque tool in time to fit before Peterborough.
Peter.

The last one I replaced for a forum member had leaked at something over 3k after a service . We checked the torque and it took a further 1/8th of a turn to close it. He had already bought a new one from ebay which has been on since and the old one bagged as a spare

Thanks, I will order one and a torque tool and have a look at the original to see if it can be salvaged as a spare. We bought the van two years ago with 3500 miles and now only hit 10k on the way home. I haven't replaced the filter so suspect it is the one fitted by Fiat in 2008.
I wonder what other joys and surprises we have in store from Mr Fiat.
I don't think I can lay the blame that way for my flat vehicle battery at Chester, must be something to do with my newly fitted Sterling B2B which doesn't seem to be working. Need to get my head round that as well now.(n)

Thanks but I was referring to the Laser filter tool you linked to earlier.

Sorry, I should have said. I already have two to cover a wide range.
Thanks, Peter.

As Andy has already said

CARRY A NEW SPARE!!!

Mine leaked at the road side, the motor home was damaged by the tow truck people ,the whole bill £1780, they damaged the rear spring during the lift.

In hindsight they could have fitted a new unit, without tools!!

If I had carried one!!

AA also paid me £200 for the 6 hours I waited at the roadside

Fiasco driven by fiat's woeful quality control

6years old , 11k miles failure

Why the hell was this filter ever invented , what was wrong with the oid screw on one , cause you still have to renew the filter inside.

The fuel filter is made by UFI and fitted to many millions of vehicles, it is NOT a Fiat product. There is a multitude of vehicle manufacturers using UFI filters and it is only the failures that get brought up on forums. IMHO the product is fine if treated with respect.

Agreed
I still have the scuttle papers on my desk, inbound for Peterborough

Just had a very quick look at my fuel filter with a view to getting the "special tool" and having a go myself.
My fuel filter seems somewhat different in that is a silver canister type looking at it.
I take it that it is a new design filter due to the leak issues..if so does anyone know the part number etc for a replacement..
Vehicle is 2012 Fiat Ducato 2.3 130hp.

Go to eurocarparts site and put your Reg number in for parts search

I'm sorry to hear of your problems, been there, done that, twice, you can contact Fiat, but I doubt that you will get a positive response.

This is an ongoing problem and God forbid this happening to me. Next time should I get a motorhome that has a Ford engine?

no, just buy a spare filter and housing as a backup. About £50 if you shop round

I doubt you'll find one at £50 new. Currently prices are hovering around £85

Is the 2014 Fiat 2.3 130 multijet engine fitted with the fuel filter which is prone to leaking?

I don't think so but best to look under the bonnet as the vehicle registration date is not necessarily the year it came of the line

Thanks Andy - How do I identify the filter housing which seems to be causing the problems mentioned in this thread?
