The reason I went for alloys was because even though I uprated the van to 3850kg I mistakenly kept the original steel wheels. Not an issue on the front axle as each wheel did not exceed 900kg. The rear axle was a different matter, it has a max load of 2250kgs after I uprated the tyres to 225's along with the vb air assist suspension. A couple of months ago we were returning home with our new trailer when I noticed the rear off side tyre was deflating. I could here air escaping so popped into Penrith to a tyre fitters. On inspection it turned out the steel wheel was cracked and that was where the air was escaping from. Bad news for me was to save some weight I took out the spare for the trip to collect the trailer, never needed it in 5 years was my thinking, how wrong I was. Long story short was that the air never escaped under 50 psi so I was able to get home and change the wheel. Lesson learned in both the weight rating and carrying a spare wheel and tyre.
