Fiamma Turbo Vent as replacement for standard vent

You seem to be awfully concerned over less than an inch 🤷‍♂️ im just showing uou what it says on the fitting instructions posted.

It clearly states * 8 " from roof cutout.
The online diagrams are very confusing! Some show the same dimensions whether open or closed, and the ones with metric dimensions do not equate to the imperial dimensions!

Lets be honest its better to have more than enough clearance than not enough clearance so if it says 8 inch id be making sure i had more than 8 inch.

Why give yourself any problems

I fully agree!! That why I've discounted the Maxxfan.

Not into the roof. There are no fasteners screwed into the roof. And all the Heki (now Dometic) vents up to and including the largest use no roof fixings.
Thanks for that.
I was looking at these instructions which looked as if the fixings were into the roof.

Just spoken to a Fiamma Turbovent supplier. They confirmed that to fix it, there are 20x external self tapping screws. :(

Alternatively look at Fan-Tastic vents as found in RV. Electric and manual with rain sensor and temperature cut off dial for fan.
Ive got the Fantastic Vent with rain sensor, it’s brilliant, but can someone tell me the difference between that and the Maxxair, it seems everyone goes for the maxxair without even considering the fantastic vent, is there a good reason for this?

The Maxxair is over £100 cheaper?

Im wondering if it was omnivents i had on previous vans as definitely no screws going in to roof.

Ahhhhh so that’s it, my FV was in when I bought it, I didn’t realise they was so expensive!! I may be ripping mine out soon, at that price I’m gonna move it to another skylight😁

Having got home from holiday and looked on the roof, I see there is nowhere near 8" clearance between the vent and solar panel.

It's therefore a Fiamma for me I thnk.

Thanks for all the advice. Most helpful

I fitted the externals of a Maxxfan Deluxe this morning (before midday while the van was still mostly in shade). It took a couple of hours to remove the old roof light... mainly because it was stuck down with black seamseal.

Tip: seamseal is completely unaffected by soapy water, alcohol and white spirits. WD40 turns it into very messy liquid ooze though.

The fan mounting frame isn't pre-drilled, so you could probably get away with just sticking it down with a strong adhesive if you really didn't want holes in your roof. I used Sika 522 which is primarily a sealant with adhesive properties. So I pre-drilled the holes through the frame and roof, removed the frame, covered the perimeter that I'd marked out in tape on the roof with two beads of Sika, forced some extra Sika into the new holes. I then dropped the frame in and put another dab of sealant on each screw hole on the frame. I then lightly tightened the screws down and neatened up the goop around the edges. I put a dab of sealant on top of each screw, but that was probably unnecessary as I think the screws are stainless.

I managed to do the whole lot in about 3 hours, mainly because the old vent was such a pain to remove and clean up. I did all of it except the last 4 screws to secure the fan unit by standing on the bed with my upper body through the skylight... but I'm a short and skinny git.

Inside, I've still got to cut down the inner surround. I've also attached temporary wiring from a nearby reading light just to make sure it worked. It moves a lot of air!

My roof is pretty thin and there's nowhere convenient route the wiring to. I think I'm going to tuck a conduit just behind an existing curtain rail channel that runs across just in front of the skylight to where I know there's easy to access wiring.

How high is the maxxfan compared to the roof light, when the fan is not in use, is it much higher

If I fitted one I would need to still be able to drive into the garage at home. There’s currently about 6 inch spare above the roof light at the minute.

It's slightly taller than a standard roof light. About the same height as my aerial. You should be good.

And below the diagram it says 8 inch . Probably because as it lifts up it is longer on diagonal. 👍

Thats why i mentioned to the op about clearance in my first response to him because ive seen a few folk caught out with this before.

The fiamma takes up the same space as a standard vent. The maxxair does not. It also requires lots of additional bolt holes through roof which im not keen on . And additional work to fit a decent flyscreen or blind . At £315 + that puts me off them to be honest. And thats the cheapest price ive seen.
There are about a dozen stainless self tappers provided, though I would have thought if you were bothered it could just be stuck down with Sikaflex, its much lighter than a solar panel with a much bigger sticky area. It doesn't need a flyscreen as it has a built in one which is easily removable for cleaning. A blind may not be necessary if you specify the white top option which is fairly opaque. I bought one this week £308.99 free delivery. (Midland Leisure) and thats the delux with remote and motorised opening.
