When we bought our van in 2015, we had a Fiamma awning installed. It’s all worked fine but I’ve noticed that in all three mounting brackets fixed to the side of the van only one side of the bracket is actually screwed down. I’ve attached a photo. I was just wondering why this is the case. Shouldn’t both ends of each bracket be fixed?

I had the same on a previous MH, the screws don´t take any weight and are just to hold the cassette in position, the weight is supported on the brackets which are bolted through the van side) the brackets have possibly not been fixed in the recommended position on the cassette (obstruction inside the van probably), as Bernie P said, put in new screws but make sure they are short and don't protrude into the cassette.
The other option is that the installer only had 4 screws, so you probably have 2 in the centre and one on each end?

No. You can see from this photo that there is only one screw on the right-hand side of the centre bracket and one screw on the left hand side of the right-hand bracket.

Ahh, so they only had 3 screws then.......

I would say you are ok to add extra screws in, just keep them short...

I did replace an awning on my last MH myself so feel comfortable with the advice, it will keep you busy for 20 mins anyway 😁

As Roby2008 says, if the brackets are not supporting the weight of the awning, then I’m minded to leave it as is. After all, it’s been fine for eight years; why tempt fate?😃

I would fit the 'extra' screws.. if they weren't required, why would the brackets have two holes ?

Also, the weight downward is not the problem, it's when the awing is extended it is pulling outwards from the the van putting strain on the screws..

As mentioned, just ensure the screws are the correct length..

I presume these are just regular self-tapping screws? I’ve got a micrometer at home and when we get back, I’ll measure the existing screws. Thanks all.

I’m not sure the screws work as fixings against the outward pull. Is this done by the way the cassette fits into the bracket at the top? I suspect the screws are only there to stop the cassette sliding sideways in the brackets and to secure the cassette to the bracket at the bottom to stop it pivoting.
I seem to remember our Burstner was the same.

That takes care of the top..

As far as I can see, the bottom edge of the case is kept from pulling out by the screws.. there is no lip.

In any case, if two screws weren't required they wouldn't have two holes

They would have two holes to cater for left or right fitting. The screws in the op are fitted into the inside holes. Centre bracket does not matter which hole used.

Anyway, what’s a couple of screws between friends?🤔

For pennies worth of self tappers just get them in. I put an awning on on Friday and the holes needed pre-drilling with a 3mm bit before driving the screws in. As far as I can tell the screws stop the awning lifting out the brackets during wind so quite vital imo.

don't think so,

I've fitted more awnings that I can remember..

screws cost pennies .. why would you not fit them.. ?
I only fitted/re-fitted two, that was enough experience for a lifetime, the 4.25m Fiamma weighs a ton and is about as awkward as my MIL........

you could buy self drilling/self tapping screws..

easier than drilling holes .. they just screw right in without drilling

Can see a line of jokes emerging from my thread-“how many screws does it take…..”
My favourite: how many men does it take to tile a bathroom?
Depends how thin you slice them! 🤣

Just had a problem with mine, nearly took off in an unexpected gust of wind. The three brackets buckled so to the caseing for the awning. Have cobbled it back in position. You will find that although two holes in each bracket only one lines up with a corresponding hole in the awning case. It is possible to drill another hole to correspond with second hole in the brackets to fix a further 3 bolts.

Does that suggest a reason for only one screw per bracket?

How many Freudians does it take to screw in a light bulb? Two. One to go up the ladder, the second to hold my …., I mean ladder! 😉
