Ferry or tunnel

It depends on where you live and where you are going.

For France and Spain the best option is the channel crossings, the tunnel being the fastest and least hassle.

For Italy, Germany, Switzerland and all points east, then the Stena Line Harwich/Hook of Holland is the best route (or Hull/Rotterdam).

Although the Harwich/Hook may be more expensive you save on hundreds of miles of fuel, plus you don't pay French tolls, plus as you can cross overnight (a cabin is part of the price) which means you gain a day or two on your holiday. You can be in Germany before others have even left Calais.

As for P&O, due to the way they treated their staff I would not use them at any price.

We booked Harwich to the hook last January. By joining the c and cc we saved way more than the cost of membership. From memory the original cost of approximately £150 reduced to £70.

P&O from Dover to Calais is the cheapest and you can use Tesco vouchers. We live near Hull but have never used the crossing as it's just way OTT for us as we'd still have quite a drive south either this side or t'other side.
Minxy Can you use tesco vouchers on for P&O ferry crossing. I thought it was tunnel only, but I could be wrong.

Just looked at booking ferry to Santander in Feb 23, returning end of April with our motorhome comparing the discounted price through CMCand using my Voyagers club membership.
CMC price £1,126 vs Voyagers membership £930.
Annual Voyagers membership is £125 and there’s 10% off food and drinks + £10 per person voucher against food on board.

Methinks I shall continue my Voyagers membership!!

Yes you can, up to £105 each way, so max of £210 in total - this is for the crossings only though, not extras, dogs etc.

We have used Irish ferries the last couple of trips, ferry not the same standard as P and O.
However we have found the paid for lounge on Irish ferries.
£12 each and as we were a early morning traveler, it works out great, all you can eat and drink, quite and luxurious.
Even the dogs are happy with a bit of ham and chorizo when we get back to the van.

Firstly it all depends on how far ahead you book. Book for next June and you can get Eurotunnel for under £300, even less by being careful with dates and times.

Second, I have checked CMC prices against booking directly with the ferry and the latter was often far cheaper, and you have the advantage of being able to book extras or change things on line directly.

Thirdly, coming from East Yorkshire you need to factor in the cost of diesel. The return cost on today's prices is about £120.

Next coming from Rotterdam you can travel on Holland and German motorways without cost. Travel via Calais and you will have to factor in any costs of motorway travel in France.

Finally, you are going on holiday. Which is the better start, the long drag down to Dover with the joys of the M25, or the short drive into Hull, overnight on the ferry, a decent breakfast then a full day on the continent to enjoy the drive in Europe? My family really used to enjoy the Hull ferry for this very reason.
