Hi all, we are going on the Hull to Rotterdam ferry tomorrow.
we board around 16.00 and sail overnight disembarking around 08.00.
we will have a freezer full of food and also a fairly well stocked fridge.
Does anyone know if it is ok to leave the gas on in the van, or will the food stay in good condition if it has to be turned off for up to 16 hrs ?
I would be grateful for any input and your own personal experiences.
many thanks to all who reply 👍

Gas off onboard ship (and when driving ). Your fridge will easily keep its temperature, as long as you close the door! Perhaps whack up (down) the chilling temperature as you drive to the port

Hi
We sailed Portsmouth to santander left gas on 22hr sail no problem
Unbelievable anyone could even think of doing that. Not only is it against maritime regulations to have a naked flame on a car deck you are also putting the ship and everyone on board at risk.

Leaving the gas on is against most ferry companies T’s & C’s its all very well until it goes wrong.
I put our fridge on gas in our garage to bring the temp down before leaving for a holiday

The regulator failed and allowed the high pressure to enter the low pressure supply the flame on the fridge was like a blow torch I could hear the noise from the garden and went to have a look,
The garage stank of gas lucky we did not have a fire or explosion If this had been on a ferry for 12 hours or so it would have had serious consequence. Anyone who even thinks of leaving the gas on on a ferry or tunnel should be imprisoned.

What a hero! Who needs those pesky safety rules, eh?
Sorry, but I can't go along with either of these posts, as they clearly contravene the rules.

vi. You must switch off any coach heaters powered by diesel fuel or liquid petroleum gas when on vehicle decks.

vii. A maximum of 3 cylinders of butane/propane (the combined weight of which must not exceed 47 kg) is allowed for lighting, cooking or heating purposes only. All cylinders must be adequately secured against movement of the ship with the supply shut off at the cylinders during the voyage. Leaking and inadequately secured or connected cylinders will be refused shipment. Any gas cylinders to be carried must be declared at the time of booking. Partially full or empty cylinders will be treated as if they are full. A maximum of 6 cylinders of medical oxygen for personal use may be carried, provided a letter from the user's doctor is provided stating that they require medical oxygen.

To suggest otherwise to fellow members is nothing short of being irresponsible.

Regards,

Jock. :(
Needs banning from ferries and tunnels with that attitude

This is a screenshot from the video clip below. Imagine if you owned the Frankia….and left the gas on with a naked flame.

That is incredibly irresponsible. Gas should be off at the bottle for sailing.

Totally agree with you Jim.

In fact TBH I would say it is actually damned stupid, dangerous and illegal.

The rest of my thoughts on people doing this are not printable.

We sailed Portsmouth to Santander and turned gas OFF for the 22hr sail. No worries re food in fridge/freezer. Mind you, we had been either travelling or on EHU in the UK for the best part of a week before sailing.

I used the Hull route on the 20th, they pulled me into the UK Customs area check and the guy asked if the gas supply was turned off and isolated at the supply, suggest you be ready for it. Also the Dutch did not pull me over on leaving the ship but if they do you will need to know how much produce you have, there are some Gov guidelines on all of this (UK and NL). I did not bother with anything and just bought on arrival. Use google maps and it will show you a 'Jumbo' or similar supermarket very close to Europort. Good luck and enjoy your trip, I thought the Ferry was good by the way and will use it again.

Best to buy those flat freezer packs, and freeze them up in your home freezer and use them to pack any voids in your freezer compartment and leave some in the fridge also.
That will keep the fridge and freezer at low enough temps to stop thawing.
Don't be tempted to leave your gas on. It's dangerous.
Also If the crew hear your gas burning they can break open the locker and switch the gas bottles off for you.o_O

I would guess it quite common on the Dover Calais routes, people simply forget, I know I have, in fact thinking about it I think I forgot when we crossed on Monday evening.

Wow! Thanks to all of you for the great advice and comments.
I will definitely be turning my gas off for the ferry crossing.
I have decided rightly or wrongly to wing it and take a bit of food that could get confiscated if I get pulled in for a check.
Fortunately I look a bit thick so hope to appeal to customs better nature and plead ignorance if they discover my stock !
I will update you all when I get back from my hols in 3 weeks, or 6 to 9 months if customs didn’t have a better nature!:oops:

If I'm not drinking tea or beer I drink squash and I'm a fully grown person,so we freeze bottles of squash 2ltr bottles and they stay frozen in my home made cool box for days.its made from 40mm insulation board made into a box wit a lid and foil taped joints. Works brilliantly.

Good move. Thank you. (y)

As long as you are not seen to be trying to hide it, it'll just be regarded as a misunderstanding of the new regs, should you get pulled, but I doubt you will myself.

Enjoy your trip. (y)

Jock. :)
