Hi all, we are going on the Hull to Rotterdam ferry tomorrow.
we board around 16.00 and sail overnight disembarking around 08.00.
we will have a freezer full of food and also a fairly well stocked fridge.
Does anyone know if it is ok to leave the gas on in the van, or will the food stay in good condition if it has to be turned off for up to 16 hrs ?
I would be grateful for any input and your own personal experiences.
many thanks to all who reply 👍

From previous threads, I don’t think leaving the gas on is an option.
It is surprising how long an unopened fridge freezer stays cold though.
Especially if you turn it up to high for a few hours beforehand

We've done the same on the Harwich to Hook ferry overnight, it will be fine if it's well packed and unopened. gas is not normally an option on ferries and not worth the risk.

Hello, we regularly use the Hull/Rotterdam ferry. You can’t leave the gas on but we’ve found that, if the fridge is left on hookup the night before we go so that it has cooled, then so long as the fridge isn’t opened much, the frozen stuff remained frozen when we disembarked after the overnight crossing.
Have a great time and enjoy the crossing too!

We have frozen dog food sent to us via a non refigerated courier. Well wrapped but 12 to 24 hours in an isulated cardboard box and it's still frozen solid when we get it.
These must be hard times for you Jim. I can send some food parcels if you’re struggling. 🙂

And food from Donald Russell via a courier in an insulated box and a few frozen blocks is always solid on arrival.

I order our raw dog food from Paleo Ridge.
They use Woolcool liners which provide 72 hours of performance.

You've given me the idea to now re-use these liners for on ferries, in cool boxes for days out etc.

We always freeze a large carton of milk and put in the fridge for crossings to Spain, and pack the freezer with as many ice blocks/sachets as possible so there is as little air as possible. Never had an issue yet, whether sailing from Plymouth or Portsmouth.

Too late for this journey (not enough 'freezing' time,) but next time, freeze a 2lt plastic bottle of milk and poss a similar plastic bottle of another liquid and put in fridge for the trip.
They will keep the fridge/freezer cold while the gas is off.

Don't worry, it will stay frozen. turn it off just before boarding,, we always come back into hull and everything is still chilled or frozen. we always "smuggle" food in to the EU. came back a couple of weeks ago, The food prices especially meat is very expensive compared to UK..
Beer and food in bars is also expensive in France. most bars was 7.50 euros for .50ltr beer. cheapest we found was 5.50 euros.
Diesel, roughly on a par with the uk. Belgium and Holland was the cheapest.

That is incredibly irresponsible. Gas should be off at the bottle for sailing.

It’s common sense to turn gas off on a ship

You May have noticed ships don’t have holes in them:doh:

Trucks and cars can move and be crushed, releasing fuel vapour, that can be ignited by the naked flame from your fridge. Just google ferry car deck damage! Your van might be crushed and release a bottle full of gas, that is so dangerous on a ship.

Risking lives because no one told me to turn it off and I want my milk to stay cold. Stupid or what!

No one told me not to open the aircraft door

Sorry, but I can't go along with either of these posts, as they clearly contravene the rules.

vi. You must switch off any coach heaters powered by diesel fuel or liquid petroleum gas when on vehicle decks.

vii. A maximum of 3 cylinders of butane/propane (the combined weight of which must not exceed 47 kg) is allowed for lighting, cooking or heating purposes only. All cylinders must be adequately secured against movement of the ship with the supply shut off at the cylinders during the voyage. Leaking and inadequately secured or connected cylinders will be refused shipment. Any gas cylinders to be carried must be declared at the time of booking. Partially full or empty cylinders will be treated as if they are full. A maximum of 6 cylinders of medical oxygen for personal use may be carried, provided a letter from the user's doctor is provided stating that they require medical oxygen.

To suggest otherwise to fellow members is nothing short of being irresponsible.

Regards,

Jock. :(

Any frozen food that has de iced and still has the odd ice particle is ok to refreeze...and the biggest supposed culprit chicken...can be re froze after thawing as long hasn't been warm.

it's a myth you can't refreeze

Depends how it’s wired. Ours runs on the engine battery when the engine’s running, but not connected to the leisure battery. A cold fridge, if closed, will keep very near it’s temperature for a day easily - unless baking in strong sunlight.

Jeez, where were you drinking???? Also having just driven down to Greece, the only place more expensive for diesel than the UK, was Switzerland France was a good 10p per litre cheaper than the UK
