What’s the fastest way to Benidorm from Calais? Have summer tyres on the van 😉

If tolls are free, is it still classified as a toll road? I mean a Sat-nav won't know that it's free, right? Have a lot of the tolls not been lifted in certain places in France and Spain now?

Just wondering as if you set it to 'tolls free' it could still make you avoid a route that is a lot quicker.... and free.
Not aware of any 'free' toll roads in France

but some have been removed in Spain

As of 2020, the following Spanish motorway tolls have become toll-free:
  • AP1 between Burgos and Armiñón (as of 2018)
  • AP4 between Seville and Cadiz (as of 2019)
  • AP7 between Tattsgona, Valencia, and Alicante (as of 2019)
25 Jan 2021

I use Google maps for navigating and it will know what toll roads are now toll free ..
but
easily checked.. set a route with 'no toll roads' and see if it uses these roads

The other potential problem with using a sat nav 'toll free' route is that some small tolls are well worth paying the few Euro to avoid a busy section or city bypass to save time and frustration ..

Bridge tolls are a prime example of ones worth paying.. unless you enjoy long detours

I only route between daily stops, and check on a map if the toll is worth paying or avoiding for the next leg..

Pamplona is often cold and frosty at this time of the year, when we came through last week it was 21degrees supposedly 9degrees above average for this time of the year😎

Wouldn't the easternmost crossing (A9 - AP7) avoid the need for winter kit ?
As you will likely use the A75 to get to the A9 which goes up to about 1100m

Quote from blurb - Still to allow time to adapt to the obligation to have winter equipment as provided for by the mountain law and its implementing decree, no sanctions will be applied during this winter season 2023-2024. This tolerance must not overshadow the spirit of this regulation: “Continue to improve the safety of road users in winter

I thought the A63 crossing was outside the snow chain zone
There is no region from the atlantic to the med that the new rules state do not require winter tyres, snow chains or socks to be used/carried.
Some regions haven't fully enforced the rules.map here ,everywhere in blue.

The more specific information on the government website implies otherwise.

The second map would seem to suggest that Limoge- Toulouse route would work. A better departure point would be Dieppe which would make skirting Paris easier.

When we go on January we will likely use the western route but a lot will depend on the weather...... tunnel for us so got the long drag through northern France.

We use Via Michelin quite a lot. It allows you to put in vehicle details and gives you a rough idea of fuel costs and accurate details of toll costs. It's quite scary!
It no longer calculates toll costs for motorhomes unless you are using a previous outdated version.

Limoges is quite elevated but I wouldn't think it would be affected by the winter rules.

Ok. I just put in Fiat Ducato 2.3 Mulitijet 130. As we are a PVC, it seems to work. I expect for bigger vehicles it would be difficult.

Well thanks for all the good replies 😁 and the not so good ones 😐
I’m going to buy (I hope) a pair of Snowchains from a classified ad from a funster on here on the way down from Perth (Scotland) to Dover and hope that mitigates the snow risk!

Have driven down to Spain through France on quite a few occasions since 2006 and have always had decent normal tyres on, sometimes in January and usually back in March, I do however carry snow chains but have never needed them, I’m hoping that it stays that way as will be travelling from St Malo to Villajoyosa early January.

A nice box trailer to tow would be handy to carry all the junk one don't need....................oh and you can put your bikes in it ;)

I stand corrected! They did delete the caravan option but have since re-instated it which means you can now calculate tolls for a class 2 motorhome. It never did make sense removing this option, there must have been a lot of negative feedback. As an aside, has'nt this turned out like so many threads on Fun. The OP asked a simple straight forward question and the non relevent answers just kept on coming.

A thread that stays true to it's starting point? No chance! :giggle: Maybe thats the 'fun' part of it all!

We drove to spain last year in December and came back 2 moths later, only once saw a faint glimmer of snow on the way back and naively never even gave snow tyres or chains a thought .
From what i'm now reading maybe for £40 i might consider buying some snow socks to throw in the van just in case
