Looking To Buy
We’re seriously thinking about this camper but the leaking skylight and damage to the side is putting us off, what do you think?

<Broken link removed>

My worry is if the skylight lets water in maybe the floor is rotten or the roof?

And the side damage?

Whatever way you look at it, that's a lot of van for 5K.

Well worth a look 👍

I am not an expert but just gone or nearing the end of a moho refurb Another few weeks and I should be finished.

Everything is fixable in due course .
the first thing on the list should be sort out any leaks .
the rest can be done in due course. That’s when your not getting some use out of it.

it looks like it needs a little refurb and tidy up so when your away enjoying the Moho your be able to sort out your list of bits to do.

after use your know what’s the most important items to do first.
every Single job that needs doing is best done as a single job.

if the engine and the chassis is in good or fair condition the rest will follow.

would I have it yes I would have but the decision is yours.
please let the forum members know what you decide.

Check carefully for damp in the walls and roof, that could be the reason why it’s being sold and unless you can do it yourself could cost many thousands.

The first one needs carefully checking all over with a damp meter, not just where the damage is, as water can run along the supports/beams etc and end up anywhere and rot it's new 'home'.

The second one has had a lot of work done on it which makes me a bit wary as to what all this new trim etc is covering up ... again a good going over with a damp meter is a must.

Well the second one with the 2.5 Diesel engine sold before we could get there it was a four hour drive. I think the petrol one is still for sale but although I don’t mind a petrol I play with engines of all types for a hobby is really rather a 2.5 diesel so I’m still undecided as yet.

Things like the roof light if it needs replacing depending on size just the part will be between £200 to £500.
Not for a typical 40x40cm model found on these models less than £100

The bodywork if your handy is a matter of time rather than money.

I replaced the whole front end of an Avondale caravan and older motorhomes are no different.

Thinking like that can lead to you buying a load of rubbish though, there’s always plenty for sake don’t rush has always been my philosophy.

OldHaggis have you looked on Gumtree https://www.gumtree.com/p/campervans-motorhomes/motorhome-/1425708726

this one is on your doorstep

Hmm no we haven’t, we stay well clear of Gumtree because it seems to attract dubious ads and loads of them seem to have a bad vibe about them… I’m probably being too critical and missing out on potential good deals so perhaps we should have a look on Gumtree. But the one you linked has terrible photos and description lol you’d think if you want to sell something you’d make sure the photos are good at least… but you’re right, we’ll have a look on there tonight.

I know haha we’re starting to think the same.

This is also true and we also agree with you on this! We understand our price range won’t get us something that doesn’t need work but we also don’t want something that isn’t usable or needs loads of expensive work because we didn’t check it out properly lol.

I was lucky when bought mine seen it on ebay as it was posted, it also went onto Gumtree at the same time . Called them drove the 3 hours that day checked it was solid put a deposit down they gave me all the service records (not the log book) I collected it a week later ran it for the first year no serious problems the turbo went this year (3 years on10.000 miles ) it is an 06plate and cost lots more that your looking at . You seem to know your way around an engine , don't get distracted by the bling inside. For £5K as you said it a trail van if you love it you maybe able to part ex it next year year or run it until it falls apart, I was doing the rough sums in my head the other day going on what I would normally pay out on hotels/plains/trains Van has paid her way even on lockdown. Have you got storage, mine lives on the drive so there are not costs there. On here people say it takes 3 vans to get it right. the photos of my house that the first estate agent posted I would not have bought it  they were so bad you have to go and have a look the ads were only examples you will see the same ones everywhere but be careful of the scammers one 'lady surgeon' from Bristol was selling her van because the husband cheated, When I told her I was a nurse at the same hospital her and van disappeared very quickly. (no I'm not a nurse) but she very very convincing.

there have been a few niggly little things that have gone wrong with mine but nothing that is not routine wear and tear on an older van, you will know it when you see it and they also say on here that there is a % I think is is 2 that you will pay put on fixes as soon as it is bought I have nearly got to that now including the turbo

Cannot wait to hear you have found your first van good luck ,

Looks like it's sold, all i'll say is steer away from the talbot 2.5 diesels, the petrol is the better engine on these according to the member forums.

That’s an interesting story :)

Yes we will keep it on our drive, we won’t pay for storage it’s that simple. Which is why we can only have a camper a max of 18ft long.

Oh thanks I’ll keep that in mind, I like bigger engines I always have done there is a reason but I won’t make a long post by explaining haha.

Thanks for the info :)

friend of mine bought his £1500 Renault sounded like a tank, had some very dubious decals and dated deco, but he had a great time until 3 years later it failed the MOT he then upgraded to a £3000 van and is using the old one for parts but he does have room to store both for free the deco in the 2nd was was even worse so he swopped it over

I know the 2.5 engines are said to be troublesome but this one is literally 2 miles from us and we keep coming back to it, it’s been for sale for ages I think it’s massively over priced because it needs a lot of work cosmetically but for some reason I’m drawn to it.

FaceBook Link :)

No because the bloke is very awkward, but we are going to see another one next weekend. It was originally up for £7k but never sold and is now £5k. It’s petrol and seems to be pretty nice. There is a lot we will change with the interior but that’s no problem we like decorating lol 😂

it always helps if you like the people who are selling, not so painful handing over the cash then the couple I bought from were very nice I have not run a petrol engine for years and as for the inside I thought about doing something to mine and everyone except my nutty friend who thinks everything should be shabby sheik said NO leave it , it is dated but it is what it is.
Try to get it fully kitted EHU cables, gas bottles I even got the dishes and glasses with mine meant that all I had to do was clean and go and to be honest they made sure it was spotless before I collected it
I am trying not to spend anymore on mine now I have solar panels and some new taps the last thing to do now is the boot locker door

I hope you find something soon

drawn to it thats how we ended up with the one we have
there were lots closer to home but we kept going back to it.
Ours looked about the same as the one your drawn to .not totally knacked but tired and need of some help.

It must be a Gut feeling thing.
we bought it knowing there was a bit to do to it but were pleased we did now. as we have an insite of whats what and where everything is.

Keep the forum informed on what you get.

So would any of you mind helping me with what setting to use my damp meter on please? I’ve been experimenting and every setting gives very different readings so it’s obviously important what setting I use.

I have this one Amazon Link

Thanks :)

So this morning we went to see this one FaceBook Link which is the one we had been drawn to time and time again.

We were expecting it to be a bit rough because the seller description is a bit chaotic and minimal and also the obvious photos.
We got there and it was much much worse in person then we expected, we didn’t get to see inside because the seller was late and there was no parking on the very crowded road. I stopped and looked around the outside while we were waiting for the seller but it was a combination of bad vibes and the physical condition that made us abandon it.

A traffic warden saved us in a way lol we had to move off the road so we decided to message the seller and be straight with him, it was much rougher than we expected and his price is far too high.

Never mind….

I’m off to see another one tomorrow!!

Not used that meter but if you place the prongs into your hand it should read around 28/29% as a good check that it's working in the correct range. Probably the wood setting is the one to use, just try it on your hand.

Well Nannie we were 100% prepared to buy one today, I had an insurance quote ready to go and money ready to rock and roll, we honestly didn’t expect it to be quite as bad as it was, but that’s alright the one we’re seeing tomorrow actually has more potential but is further away, it might be fait!
