Thanks for all the replies to date

Get yourself a pigeon they can find their own way home....:)

not sure if @Wendo55 took hers to France for the last couple of years & germany next year? Hopefully she'll pick this up & let you know.
Hi Debs, and Neil. I have a cockatiel. I couldn't find any restrictions, only for poultry and homing pigeons. Don't think you'll have any problems.
However, when booking the ferry they want you to pay (for any other pets) the same as for a dog! I thought of hiding the cage in the shower room and not saying anything but he's such a noisy bugger I'd have been sussed!
Found a bird-sitter in the end.

Hi @Wendo55 - I think ours would just tell them to F**k Off :D2

I assume the bird is closed rung ? Most breeds have their own schemes but a microchip isn't a bad way to go. I used to drive my bird over in the mid 90's and always declared him at the border (both ways) he was in those days BBCR (british bred closed rung) pre-chips. Never had any issues.

We have traveled over with many animals over the years since:

Ferrets
Chickens (about 20 over the years)
Cats
Dogs
Guinea pigs
Fish
Snails
Shrimps
Butterfly pupae
Corals
Ducks
Rabbits

All in the camper

Only the hens were an issue as we had over the max number and so they classed as livestock (as a group above 6 or 8 i think)

The coral is a whole other story, that would need a book to describe the CITES paperwork.....

And no partridge in a pear tree? :D

@Ridgeway - yes he is close rung and I have all his original paperwork, certificates etc showing the ring number.

Closed rung and papers, you'll be fine.

Just make sure he doesn't answer back when customs ask "anything to declare":)

Typically i've found that in 99% of cases with our traveling zoo that customs aren't interested, even when i tell them what's in the van.

Hope this doesn't offend or get me sent to Coventry .....:sneaky:

It used to be that you needed a ring or a tattoo,-I suppose a tattoed number and not 'Mom'-to be able to take them out of the country and back in.
It seems to have changed and we have read on the .gov websites that birds and small mammals such as rabbits are exempt, so we bought an old Hymer and are looking forward to going to the continent with our birds.
Have fun travels!
