Europe Starting to Close/Quarantine For UK Travellers

Europe will be closed a bit more if the Swiss vote to cancel free movement for EU nationals passes.

I am not sure what arrangements the UK and Swiss governments have made for 1st Jan onwards.

Anyone know?

As we don't seem to have arrived at any definite answer for the rest of Europe I doubt anyone has even thought about Switzerland. If they don't vote to end free movement presumably the same restrictions will apply for us travelling there as the rest of the EU. An interesting question is whether they are part of the Schengen area if they are it's pretty straightforward if not how do they know if a UK national has been there or in Schengen after next year?

If they vote to stop free movement they will have to secede from Schengen.

If they Secede from Schengen Switzerland will become a country in the middle of Europe where one's stay does not count towards one's 90/180 days in Schengen, albeit an expensive one for motorhoming.

And you could potentially end up hostage there unless you fly home and leave the MH there if your 90 days are up.

Don't be silly, nobody is going to enter SW after the 90 days is finished(unless they want 90 days there), but it would enable one, for example, to do 60 days Schengen, 30 days SW then 30 days Schengen before leaving, so 4ish months, or longer if one stayed longer in SW.

Switzerland is part of Schengen, currently although many of the population are very unhappy by what they see as EU interference in their domestic affairs. The U.K. government and the Swiss feeders government have already done their deals on citizens rights and movement , business, monetary clearance etc... they are obviously much easier and forward thinking to deal with the EU commissioners .

I have been thinking further about the rule you point to.

I have concluded that maybe there is more flexibility to it.

Otherwise a non-schengen citizen arriving at Toulouse airport and driving to Andorra for 4 months in his Summer chalet, and back to the airport, would be a Schengen overstayer of 90/180 days, having spent only hours in France. I cannot believe that there is not provision for such a scenario since Andorra has no airport.

We have friends who have houses in SW France and Andorra and certainly spend most of the year between the two, but they are Andorran residents so there must be an exception for them.

When we went to Switzerland this year there was no one checking passports in or out, can’t see this changing any time soon.
It would mean every country in Europe would need a border post on every crossing just to check for U.K. residents.
This will never happen so how are they going to know where you’ve been once you leave the U.K. and in what country.

As has been said before to control 90 day limits in Schengen there only needs to be border checks at borders where the Schengen countries meet non-Schengen, which there are already.

There is also a 90-day limit on how long a person may stay in any one country, but that only in effect applies to Schengen residents, since if they breached that one non-Schengen ones would breach the 90-day rule when exiting Schengen. The 90-day for in one country for Schengen residents seems to be largely ignored.

No! The internal borders within the Schengen zone are irrelevant to UK residents next year.

As has been said before to control 90 day limits in Schengen there only needs to be border checks at borders where the Schengen countries meet non-Schengen, which there are already.
