Engine oil and filter change ?

Are those of you with levelers suggesting you go underneath without additional support?
I have always serviced my vehicles myself must be an age thing.

I have no choice other than take it to the "pros" as I have the 5yr warranty pants down at 2yr service so getting lubed up for the 4yr service 🤣 once the 5yrs is out I will do my own servicing.

I know it's not in quite the same league, but that Briggs and Stratton engined lawnmower I worked on the other day didn't even have an oil drain plug in it, when did they start doing that, are they "sealed for life" units now ? 🤦‍♂️
It comes out the same way it goes in mate!
😉

I've got a big graduated oil sucker that I used, but as I didn't know how much to refill it with, I turned the syringe upside down and started to raise the plunger to expel the free air to get a measurement and a couple of cc's that were in the dip pipe made it to the garage ceiling ! 🤦‍♂️ :ROFLMAO:
If you buy the B&S oil, it’s exactly the right measurement and just tip it all in 👍🏻

Nothing wrong with a pair of axle stands, just incase, though I once left it with all four wheels off for a couple of days whilst they were being refurbished, axle stands loosely in place incase it lowered, never moved a millimetre.
Never moves when on site if wheels are off the ground over four or five days in the same place.

Mine comes out in a nice blue haze where it slips past the rings. Obviously with age it's not as tight as it used to be.
It's a bit like 'triggers' broom on its 3rd engine.

It's been many years since I did my own servicing, never put a car or motorhome into a garage, but even a minor service, basically an old and filter change, is becoming expensive, local garage charges £75 per hour, plus parts which are always listed at 7 litres of oil at £xx per litre, (even though it only holds 5.7lt ) + a gold plated oil filter, + a gold sump plug washer .. + Labour ... so decided to have a crack myself..

Yesterday I had a look under the engine to see if the filter was easy to reach, and yes it is, as is the sump plug.. so decided to do it myself today..

6 lt Coma oil + filter + washer .. = £54

Job done ..

Who else does there own servicing ?
Yep, A3 Cabrio, SEAT Alhambra and the Ducato 150 MH when we had it, once a year on everything, pads and discs when req.
will pay the garage when it´s too much for me, eg: rear engine seal oil leak on the Ducato.

Got stumped by her Alhambra though, thought to do the DSG oil change, got the oil and filters and the special filling hose, can´t access anything though, needs a ramp........

Have my own ´service ´stamp and a cheap OBD reader to reset the VAG schedules, all done by the book 🤔

Always with axle stands. I have a mate who crushed his pelvis relying on the jacks on his ageing America Motorhome.

I do my own easy servicing, cambelt, expensive tool intensive and hard stuff left for others if body is going to groan a bit. Used to do everything except grinding in valves, used to leave that to the wife, far better at it than me. All the thinking stuff and techno stuff i do myself. Even down to putting an occiloscope to the beast. It is a bit of an age thing though i try to share the groans with my son when working on his car.

First off well done you, you look you saw and you conquered 👍

I’m the families mechanic, not as a job 😉😊

The BiL, the three kids including partners, the wife and my Shogun and Moho.
This is servicing, diagnostics and anything mechanical related.

I moan about it but have to admit I kind of enjoy it 😊

Do all my vehicle servicing and always have done, even on brand new vehicles. I’ve used a Haynes manual as a service record, but filled all the notes pages, so switched to adding them on my iPad.
Same with the jollybus, I filled all the service inserts in FIAT, so switched again to iPad.

I hope you had a long list of items on a sheet of paper you could tick off as you looked around 😂

Of course, bend down have a quick shifty and ticked em all…. It was at this point I noticed that I have a 15’ spare and 16s on the van with a mot booked tomorrow …😆🤔😎

I do it all. Oil and filter change as you say is super simple and quick. Top tip: comma fully synthetic oil. £25 for 5ltr. Meets all relevant API spec. You can extend changes to about 8k miles, where normally I’d do it at 4 or 5k.

Everything on a camper is simple, they are after all based on commercial vehicles..

used to do all my own maintenance, but now got an ev on a Motability lease, and from the day I picked the car up I have never even looked under the bonnet, no point it being an EV there is nothing under there that needs checking.

Spare is not part of MOT

I do most things if I can, recently had a CV boot done at a garage due to high torque required for hub nut and a cheap quote. Price went up a lot and had to take it back because the new wrong boot came off in 3 miles, so they had to do it again, wished I’d done it.

Just had my two year old Ford Transit based MH serviced by Arnold Clark. Was charged £142 just for the oil. Filters etc were on top (£35) seems like a lot for oil.
Any thoughts. Not mechanically minded.

Is it the 2ltr internal belt engine? They have to have a special oil apparently, though £142 makes it very very special.
A friend of mine just had his in for investigation of poor running, they removed the sump to check the belt and oil pick up, found no problem but charged him nearly £200 for a new sump pan. They said it’s a disposable part now because of how it’s fixed.
His problem turned out to be a faulty turbo.

Put your vehicle in here and it will tell you what oil you need and how much…

Take care, just put my reg in and it told me that my 2.3 Fiat engine needed 7 LTRs! 😱

Probably cheaper to buy two 5l then next time just buy a 5l 😊
Exactly what i was doing, then found out i could get 20l for 20% off , unfortunately just bought 10l.
Need to find a way to buy for 3 vehicles the cheapest way Duc 2017 euro6 .vw 1.6 cayc tdi. Vw 1.0 UP

it is if its fitted you need to leave it at home
No it’s not. The spare can be carried, not carried, flat, bald, different size, different colour. It’s not part of MOT.
