Engine oil - 2005 sprinter 2.7 engine

Hi

What engine oil should be used ?
-2005 Sprinter 316 CDi (2.7 engine)

Manual from what I can see states 10w-40 but Mercedes says that’s now discontinued?? Only 5W-30 available from Mercedes?

Any help it’s appreciated thanks

10W 40 is available from any motor factors
Probably cheaper than MB too

Various garages have added 5W 40, 5W 30 and 10W 40.
The last was from a commercial MB garage for what it's worth...
I do change it yearly regardless of mileage although the handbook says 2 yearly is fine.

Stick with 10W 40- and go synthetic if you can afford it- try one of the little known brands on E- BAY. I used to drive the local fire engine in London Fire Brigade - engine oil never changed .

the Moho was last serviced in May 2024

As we are going for a long ish trip next month i wanted to buy a spare 1L bottle to bring with me.

So looked at the manual and could not clearly find much infos.

I did some more research finding (if I’m right) the merc specs for this eg are 228.5 or 229.5 so I contacted 2 different merc garages, one said correct part -A000989470411FBFK which is 10W-40 228.51 but said Merc UK no longer stock this oil this was also confirmed by the second Merc garage only 5W30 available which they use across all sprinters now apparently

I then ring the garage who did last service and they also said they used 5W30

So I guess I’ll buy a 5W30 1L bottle with me and do some more research before the next service it’s due now

5w 30 is thinner than recommended, meaning an increased risk of it seeping past seals.
Keep an eye on it, or put the correct grade oil in
