Hi all. I used my emovis tag for years in France with our car and caravan but since upgrading to motorhome I have had problems. Our motorhome is 9m long x 3m high x 2.35m wide and is 5t weight. The tag works at some toll gates but not others, any advice why this happens and if any other options available would be gratefully received?

Get on the intercom and tell the nice French person you are in a “camping car” they will let you through with minimal fuss

It's a toll tag which is charged direct to an account
Beg to differ, we’ve got to the toll occasionally and the barrier hasn’t opened, our rig is just a standard 7m long Autotrail Apache. Wife has had to use her outstanding grasp of Franglais (not!) to indicate we are indeed a “camping car”

Aren't they over 3m high?

If I have the rear semi air suspension set at 3 bar then our rig probably IS more than 3m high, most of the time when we go through the fast track toll booth we don’t have to slow down or stop. Maybe once every 6-7 toll booths do we get stopped.

Won't help as the toll tag they have purchased is already for a HGV so won't matter, only way would be to not show the toll tag and then buzz the intercom but this defeats the purpose of these things in the first place. The point of these is to not have to stretch and reach for the impossible buttons etc that you are faced with when using these tolls but if it were me i would get the fulli tag even if i am 3.2m High and a tag axle as it would cost peanuts to test the theory and save a lot more if it does work.

When AutoTrail redesigned their range of coachbuilts around 2015/16(?) they, in their wisdom, made them 3.04 or 3.1 metres high, depending on the use of the overcab. Whoever had that bright idea clearly didn’t consider French tolls. Strictly speaking, being over 3.0 metres, they don’t fall within class 2. Ours is the 3.04 metre variant and we find that if we are well (but legally) loaded and have plenty of fuel in the forward-mounted tank the vehicle settles on its suspension enough so we just about sneak under the 3.00 metre limit. It’s not guaranteed though and we have, on occasion, been charged in the higher class which considerably increases the fee. Thanks AutoTrail.

Have you tried the Fulli tag as that works for me and the others like emovis/sanef failed more than they worked thats for sure, you do have to get within touching distance of some of the barriers (the ones that dont have a fast lane) but they still open. What's the harm in trying one as if it doesnt then just send it back but if it does then that a massive saving over what you are currently paying.

Been using the Emovis tags for France, Spain and Portugal for 6 years. Never had a problem with them at all. That is probably because my motorhome is less than 3m high. With emovis they give you a warning when your tag battery may be running out and they will change the tags. We are on our second set now but still showing the batteries as OK on their website

My wife wouldn't be without them, saves the leaning out and trying to put cash or card into whatever looks like the appropriate place. Previously she has nearly put the card into a join in the kiosks cover and also dropped the change all over the road. And sometimes she could not find anywhere to put the money or card until she realised that you just need to take the ticket flapping in the wind! And all that with a line of cars peeping their horns behind us.

It seems to me that the problems in France occur when the motorhome is over 3m or, in some cases, has TAG axles. Those are Class 3 and the emovis tags can only be used up to class 2. If you are lucky they may work if you use the fast truck lanes, but most ordinary toll booths will refuse to open automatically and you have to use the "nous sommes un camping car" trick and if that does not work you have to use the old fashioned way, i.e. money or card and pay the class 3 rates.

There are different rules in Spain and Portugal. For example in Portugal the height is only relevant for class 1, which is for motorcycles and passenger cars less than 1.1m high measured at the front axle. Classes 2 to 4 depend upon the number of axles you have. Class 2 is for 2 axles, class 3 is for 3 axles and class 4 is for 4 or more axles.

Coming down through France and Spain a couple of weeks ago in our Hymer 778, 8.5 long, 2.3 wide. 3.0 high, 5 tonne tag axle. Ever ticket we got from the booth said we are class 2. We were also towing.

My guess is if you really are 3.0m that there is a little bit of margin allowed. They usually do not measure weight or count axles and length or width is irrelevant. The advantage of having a tag is that you don't need to stop to pay or pick up tickets.

offagen ....
Do you risk it, payg or have a larger vehicle tag?
Cheers
We never intentionally go for a larger vehicle tag. That would add a lot of cost when driving to the south.

If we just pop over for a couple of weeks without going far we don't bother with a tag. It's only for trips of longer duration and a lot of motorway miles that we use a tag.

As I mentioned above, we are often accepted as class 2 if we are well loaded but sometimes we are not and that hurts the wallet.
