Dethleffs Trend
My Dethleffs has a warning buzzer that sounds if I leave the steps out and start the engine.

Does anyone know of a similar device - or maybe a simple circuit - to warn that the EHU is still attached if the engine is started?

I know that the Mark 1 eyeball is best but, we all forget. I note, from comments on this site, that driving off whilst hooked up happens frequently...

You simply replace the switch you use at the minute to put the step in with a 12v relay contacts and wire the coil to the accessory ignition. Or you can leave the switch in and wire the relay contacts in parallel 🤔
Having said that I don't know anything about retracting steps so take it with a pinch of salt 😆
Lenny will know 👍
Depends on the type of relay that operates the step. Hymer just just touch the switch and the step will go in or out, Carthago's you have to hold the switch until step is fully in or out.

Many thanks. Simpler than I imagined. Input to buzzer from something like the Acc feed?
If you go to the back of your fridge (remove the outside vent) you'll find all the connections you need.
If i was a designer for these fridges, it'd be a fuature I'dd add for free (they cost enough already).

You can't beat a walk round check. Lights, tyres, cables, cats and dogs under the van, vents, windows, satellite dish etc etc. Walk round twice if necessary. A legal requirement if you're an HGV driver and any driver is ultimately responsible for their vehicle no matter what type of licence.

We have a little-home-made card that we put behind the steering wheel to remind us when we have the wheel clamp on, you could do something similar.

Not cheap but very effective - get a wife/partner who goes to the trouble to make a check list and pecks your head until you agree you have complied - simples! 😂

Put cable bag on drivers seat.

Keep it simple……. Buy one of these (available from most Caravan/MoHo Accessory Shops)…….. Use to store cable and when deployed simply hang over your gearstick. Well, works for me!

I have a hand written note which i place over the speedo to remind me to unhook, check the fridge, roof lights, etc. But been there with forgetting! (at 80 i believe i have a good excuse!)

My Autotrail Cheyenne sounds an alarm if I start it and the EHU is still connected.

All this is ok if you are on site. When at home & I unplug, the plug is left hanging next to the socket until I return & plug it back in again.
A walk around is ok if you actually see anyting & are not being continually haranged about all sorts of other nonsense completely irrelevant to anything to do with driving off.

Talking to a fellow motorhomer and said he had driven off up the road with his generator still connected ! Not sure if he wanted to use the toaster while on the move ?

still cant beat the "you MUST" have a walk around before you set off (even though you think youre good to go)!

Last week, despite thinking id checked everything before setting off to the supermarket, I got out to discover not only was the EHU still connected, but my mountain bike was still chained to the towbar at the back!!

Were you going to the supermarket on your bike then ?

no, but thats why it was still chained out of sight at the back! I use it to do small shops with a back pack.
First time Ive left it out rather than on the bike rack or in the garage, hence the need to always do a walk around before setting off, theres always something.

Technology will regularly let you down. Make a habit of walking around your unit before getting into the cab. Even if it's raining.

I hope you switch off or unplug the supply. I never like to leave a live lead around, especially here as there is a 3 year grandchild running around the yard - little fingers can be curious.

I fitted a 'micro' switch to the inside of the EHU socket flap,..wire feed from ignion to the switch, then back to dashboard with a large red warning light and buzzer. ...Has caught me a couple of times, so i still have a 'final' walk around, AND a good look under the MH where forgotten things live ..
