Autotrail V-line 540

I Make Schoolboy Errors!
I've signed on the dotted line. I've raided the mortgage. I'm taking out HP. I'll need to work day and night to pay for it if I'm to avoid bankruptcy. But hey, you only live once!

I'm a little impatient as it's yet to be built so probably not going to be ready till at least July :( It's exciting since I'll be new to the motorhome world, moving up from canvas, so many might say perhaps I should first try second hand.

Some will be surprised by my choice, given the number of people on here that had problems, on the other hand many seem happy. It's a new Autotrail V-line 540SE. After a lot of looking around I think I have a good price (I'll keep quiet on the exact amount). It will have the 2019 spec with the media pack (camera, DAB radio and stuff). After due consideration of some earlier threads I compromised on the 130BHP engine with comfortmatic gearbox (the 150 would have been nicer, but I've really overstretched the budget).

I've spent a few months looking around. Van length was critical to choice. It's only for me, and had to fit on drive so the 6m lengths where there is much more choice was out. At less than 5.5m there are few manufacturers, and most of those are unaffordable new. The Autotrail is more realistic priced, especially with the discount I was offered (but perhaps there is a reason for that). Second hand there is so little choice (i have looked for a number of months) especially when I wanted rear lounge / bed, with the toilet option, only 2 berth / 2 seats (why waste space on the front added travel seat / dining table that I'll never use).

I suspect I'm a fair weather Spring to Autumn user. But the convenience of the van outside the house so I can jump in and go most weekends will be great. So the aim is to escape for 2-3 day long weekends, charge off to tranquility so I can then meander around an area on the e-bike and then chill out for an evening. A couple of times a year to venture a bit further afield for a week or so, perhaps a ferry and see how the Europeans treat us Brits if Brexit ever materialises.

So now I'm scouring this forum to find out all the things I never knew about motorhomes. The toys I might need, and what I will not. If I let it, this could become a very expensive new pastime.

But it's also a battle understanding some of this new jargon. I have yet to really understand the differences between an Aire, a CL, a campsite or whatever. It seems to be a nightmare what chemicals you shouldn't put into your toilet. Really not sure why I might need a watering can to fill up a tank with water :P And as for how you still have electricery left after a couple of hours parked up somewhere this is going to need some real wizardry. And who knows what perils of insurance, trackers, breakdown cover and other hideous entrapments await my pleasure.

Yay, I have a collection date of the Friday 2nd August. Can't wait (but I think my bank account can), and ideal for the Lymington Rally they following weekend

Congrats on the van, we know exactly how you feel. Had that feeling last June  We spent two years asking questions on here and looking at vans at shows and dealers. Twice thought we were 100% certain about the layout we wanted, then we came across the van that we bought and it's been absolutely perfect.

The conscensus of opinion says that you don't have the perfect van till your third one, guess we were just lucky. We put in the miles and time looking before we parted with our hard earned cash. It ticks every box for us and has so many extras which we would otherwise have had to buy.
Hope that you are as happy (and lucky) as we are with ours (y)

Most of it was behind me on the 20 miles or so I’ve driven so far! Test drive at dealers apparently they are all waving as a roof light is wide open. Then get waved at about a mile into the drive by some nice Motorhome who I ignore. Later get totally stuck at traffic lights everyone honking as I’ve put the comfortmatic into neutral and not realised you need foot on pedals to get into gear again.

I am a calamity waiting to happen. I’m doing my best to live down to my username.

Nearly gave myself a heart attack putting a tank load of diesel in. £100 :whatthe: If I get £45 into my car my credit card starts screaming.
The secret is don't let it get too low :whistle2:

First time filling up in the UK after getting back from Spain was the big shock for me. Then again the way the pound is tanking (no pun intended), not sure what the real difference is now.

Won't be able to afford to refill till next month. Then I'll be back to square one. I'm going to be the slowest motorhome in the world in search of that extra tenth of a mile in fuel economy.

I drive a jeep that does 23 m.p.g. my motorhome does about 28 m.p.g. So economical lol...I fill when it is half empty as I am always in remote places or driving late. The thing is you live once. (unless you're a Buddhist) So do it and have no regrets. I used to sail a 30ft ocean cruiser. Sold that and bought an old MH. Best thing I did. Used right a MHcan change your life for the better. Meet some great ppl, great memories and thats worth more than money.

Congratulations, you will quickly get used to it
We use our Burstner as much for a day out in the New Forest, not worrying what time to leave.
Or meet the kids on the beach, tea and toilet all there with you.

Europe is the place to go, we get off the Ferry in Calais, spend the night on the beach with another 40 or 50 motorhomes, deciding whether we go South East or South West.

We used to book campsites if traveling at peak, but now we mainly use Aires in France.
In fact practically every attraction in France has dedicated parking for Motorhomes with Fresh Water and Toilet dump.

Last Year in July/August we paid out £60 in pitch fees.

If you have very young children then I can understand the need for campsite pitches.

Only Aires not to use are the ones on motorways.
We have never had any issues and this is our 19th Year motorhoming in Europe

The key, is take your time, don't stretch your travel distance for a couple of years

But wonderful, just taking it out to your nearest Lake/Beach/Forest for a few hours to read the paper and have a coffee is fun and relaxing
