Just read that the decision has been made to cancel this years Hogmanay celebration. This must be devastating news for those who have travelled far and wide to be there. What will the tens of thousands who are packed into every hotel, AirBnB, guest house, campsites etc do tonight? I appreciate it’s based on safety and accept it needs to be cancelled but what do all these people do now, just so many of them with no where to go. Guess they just go to bed, what a shame for them.

3rd time, if memory serves, since 2000 that this has been cancelled at short notice because of weather

The main concern is structural integrity, it is well known that the sandstone buildings and structures have integrity issues due to the soft sandstone erosion. Mix this with high winds and high density street crowding the consequence of falling masonry is just too great. Such a shame, so many disappointed people with absolutely no alternative.

Everyone will still be in the pubs etc and in the streets at midnight. They can’t stop folk doing that. Unless they close all the pubs and restaurants etc and I can’t see that happening. All the outside entertainment and fireworks etc will be cancelled so a lot of folk will stay at home or go home early.

Forecast for the Highlands is bad as well, so take care driving up this way blowing a hoolie currently and sideways rain! Lots of flood warnings in place around Fort William and Glencoe

anything outside would be considered possibly/probably dangerous, but surely they can go to a pub, bar or club to welcome in the new year?
or am I missing something?
Most pubs, clubs etc shall be ticketed events. They are broken down into two areas. Pubs, clubs and hotels which have a view shall have sold tickets to the tourists so those with tickets shall be okay. The other establishments out of the Princes Street area will also be ticketed events to allow their local regular clientele access and somewhere to go. If you don’t have a ticket for tonight the chances of getting access to anywhere is very very unlikely and remember the barriers closing off the main part of the city to create the ticket zone shall still be in place to prevent unauthorised access. That leaves between 40,000 to 60,000 people looking for somewhere to go 😩

City Centre closed and barriers in place. 99% of establishments within the city centre, Leith or New Town are ticketed events. Remember, the Hogmanay celebration is a hugely controversial event with many Edinburgh residents. On the implementation of tickets many years ago it is well documented that only a very small percentage of tickets were awarded to Edinburgh residents, the Council ensuring the reward of tickets given to lucrative tourists. Many other tourists arrive who don’t have tickets since the numbers sold have reduced over the years. Therefore, many establishments ensure the needs of their regulars is met by also being ticketed to ensure they have a venue. If you only have a ticket for the Hogmany Celebration the chances of getting indoor venue tonight is very unlikely. Just read they are now closing Calton Hill on the grounds of safety, so that narrows down the usual outdoor space even more. So many disappointed tourists, I feel so sorry for them.

Maybe they'll congregate at the Tron like the old days.

Blackpool has also cancelled their fireworks and London is keeping a careful eye on the weather forecast. Unfortunate timing for bad weather. I shall go to bed at my normal time and hope we don’t have a power cut. Happy New Year to all.🎉

Not sure about pubs all being ticketed ?
Perhaps within the party area .
When they cancelled at the very last minute (2006?) previously pubs did very well out of it .

Gosh. Who would have thought it. Bad weather in Scotland in the winter . . . . Still, you pays your money and you takes your chance . . .

Edinburgh hasn't cancelled hogmanay. One big event has been cancelled because the sloppy organisers couldn't get it ready in time.
Typical click bait headline to shock the gullible

It's not only due to the weather on the big night but it was so wet yesterday the required structures and safety equipment couldn't be erected or implemented. Many other events will unfortunately have to be cancelled.

I think that gets closed off as well, it certainly did a few years back 🙄

If you can get one well done, 60,000 people all looking. Any pub I know of in the area mentioned are now ticketed. Remember, if your premises are within the cordoned area it is a mandatory ticketed event as your clientele need to get through the cordoned area. Anything outwith will already be very very busy with majority of locals grabbing tickets. Prior to leaving for Thailand both our local restaurant and wine bar we frequent were offering tickets for New Year and they are both near us in the New Town.

Don't know if area will be cordoned as there is no event .
Not aware of any pub in Old Town area that is ticketed .
Temporary parking restrictions near Royal Mile have now been lifted .
Pubs will , most certainly , be busy .

As far as the email from Edinburgh City Council cordon remains in place to prevent uncontrolled access to Princes Street. We live on Regent Terrace so get updates hourly from the council as we are deemed to be in an impact area

That is strange . Are they letting people go to Prince's Street?
Impact area because you are close to Calton hill ?
None of it really seems to affect the Old Town

We live on Regent Terrace which is directly below Calton Hill, Regent Terrace and Royal Terrace private garden is located on Calton Hill where access could be controlled. Last email says Calton Hill access will be restricted and Princes Street cordon remains in place which I assume they need too or the masses would just head for an uncontrolled Princes Street. If we want access to the gardens we need to show proof of address. The fact we have a key doesn’t seem to provide satisfactory evidence. Not an issue to us as we are in Thailand.

No don't think you'll have a problem over there .

So you've got an empty we can all invade....eh house sit!:xwink:

I probably know the only two people who are celebrating it being cancelled. My son and his fiancée. It wouldn’t have been safe for Coral on her crutches but now that it’s been cancelled they’ll get their money back! Matthew had given the tickets to a friend but the refund will come back to him now. Every cloud has a silver lining :giggle:

Good luck with that, we probably have the best free security anywhere in Scotland. The three guys who sit outside in the BMW M5 and change out 3 times a day might have something to say. We live next door to the American Consulate 😂😂

There was a Michelle Mason in a motorhome on the BBC News at 6 being interviewed about events being cancelled.

It really grinds my gears when these headlines are made out to be an armageddon scenario. We're just across the Firth from Edinburgh and the weather is mildly breezy but due to the headlines the site has had enough cancellations to make the night's events a non starter. They dropped off a lovely gift bag of goodies and couldn't apologise enough but it's such a shame that click bait has squashed details 🤬
