DVLA driving license medical

Any recent experience on how long DVLA are taking after receipt of form?
Sent mine off on 29 September. Turned 70 last week. No news yet which given all the news here is not surprising. I will only start getting jumpy early next year as I begin to plan crossing the water once winter is over

Hubby had his returned after a month asking him to fill in details of what - they don’t say, he filled in address that was missing but was printed on the same form anyway, why does he have to put it in again. Tried to call them for 2 days, phone continually engaged....... or turned off. So off it goes again, more wasting time. Good job I’m not going away before Xmas.

I well remember my GP over 20 years ago telling me one day that he'd just done a medical for a chap with an HGV licence, and the Blood Pressure question was actually 'Is the BP under X and Y' so he'd ticked the 'Yes' box and also because the BP was so far below X and Y, which he obviously thought was impressive, he'd written 'A/B' in the margin - and DVLA had returned the form to him telling him he couldn't write in the margin. They did not however send him a blank form so he had to contact the patient, explain and apologise to him and ask him to get a new form please. They have been useless for a lot longer than recently.

They do waste time, paper, postage (mine twice) as you have to send RD or they say never received. Glad I sent it 6 months early, I may get it back before I go away, hopefully. PS. We used D4D as well for medical, all okay

I have copied this from another thread as this seems a more suitable place.

I completed the necessary D2/D4 forms & applied for my C1 licence (at 70) the 1st week of March 2021. The health questionnaire was completed by D4drivers. Whilst I do have several medical issues, these are well controlled & at no time have I been told that I can't drive by my doctors. I have even had a letter from the DVLA to say I meet their medical standards to drive with a ICD (defibrillator) fitted. They then issued my new licence without the C1 status as requested. I promptly returned the licence & requested they add the C1 noting they have not given any reason as to why the C1 was not issued, which seems contrary to their previous letter.
Almost 5 months later they sent me the licence back, again without the C1 or any explanation or acknowledgement of my letter ! I returned the licence for a second time, with yet another letter outlining all the relevant points & correspondence.
I have given up in phoning the DVLA as they do not reply. Whilst I am happy that I am covered to drive under section 88, this cannot go on for ever & I cannot drive outside the UK.
My problem is, due to the lack of feedback from the DVLA I don't know where I stand about my C1 entitlement. I know that I am not the only person who are suffering at the hands of the DVLA. I still await DVLA to reply.
Am I right to expect the DVLA to give me their reason for not granting my C1 entitlement.

Looks like all of those with DVLA issues need to write out a complete timeline and write to DVLA / MP / Grant Schapps / Boris with a coipy and request full answers / explanations.
DVLA is not fit for purpose

Agreed, best to get your local mp on the job. That's if he is working in the UK. (y)

Rang the DVLA today and persevered for 20 minutes before I actually got thru to a time allotted hold (45minutes in my case) I actually spoke to a chap and he confirmed that they had actually received my report 3 days after they had sent me a letter dated the 5th November which I received in this mornings post, which stated that they had not yet received my medical report from my treadmill test a month ago. Confirmed with the relevant hospital that they had indeed sent my report thru. He said they will be sending me my licence soon but could not give a timeline. I said I had been waiting since the beginning of May this year since I had my medical for the CI renewal and it is holding up any hope of going abroad if we wanted to. He said I will make a note on on your file and hopefully things may progress a little quicker. Not holding my breath.

I think there is a piece here about understanding the D4 form and the complexities of DVLA. When I recently completed my medical it was done by someone who I know very well. As we went through the form and on reaching the cardiac section the Dr. doing the test, prior to asking the question advised the way in which DVLA work. If D4 is marked 100% with "No" answers then the person doing the processing can issue the renewal. If it has any "yes" no matter what the reason, it is automatically transferred to the DVLA Medical Team with inevitable delays. There was no requirement within the medical questions for me to declare I had an ECG as a precautionary wellman clinic which is provided by my medical provider annually. The ECG was not in anyway related to symptoms or illness, but precautionary and all was found to be okay. If I had revealed the information to the Dr. she would have been duty bound to record it and a "yes" would have been entered, it would of course under the notes section given details that nothing untoward was found, but again this would have had to have gone to the medical team to be reviewed.

The advice I was given was answer the questions truthfully and honestly, but offer up no other information out with the specific questions contained within the D4

so DVLA wasting, sorry spending more of our (taxpayer's) money in renting private hospital space to carry out their tests,
Wonder who is on the boards of directors / shareholders of these private units ??
Only asking :giggle:
DVLA are damned if they do and damned if they don't. They could choose to wait until availability of an NHS Consultant becomes available and have everyone hang around for that to happen. Instead, they are being proactive and recruiting retired Consultants to carry out the required follow ups. The Consultants are working as free lance to DVLA so up to them where they wish to consult. This particular Consultant has chosen to work out of a private hospital. Some of my friends are choosing to work out of hotel space, it is up to the individual Consultant. Remember, many have come out of retirement and are having to pay indemnity insurance as they are no longer NHS employees.
I guess they could all pack up go home and save the nations purse and you could wait another 3 years for your renewal, be careful what you wish for.
