Durham County.

Up at 8 this morning, Sun cracking the flags already.
Forgotten to get the waffles out of the freezer last night so we had a banana for breakfast and a toasted hot x bun for brekkies.
BUT, someone had forgotten to put butter, jam, marmalade in the fridge. So we had them "naked" and tasty they were.
Good job or I would have been in the bad books.
Dishes all done and lotions and lotions routine just about there.
Off on a walk soon.

Looked bloody full last night

Back from our walk.
Went across the footbridge next to the site.
IMG_20250412_101406782.webpMini waterfall behind the farmhouse at the site.
Walked along the public footpath next the river to the village, we through it; it's quiet.
Down past the school and over another footbridge, back on public footpath to the site.
Little rest stop on a park bench, took this vid.

Back at the site now enjoying a raspberry lemonade.
Walk took 1hr 20 minutes so I guess 2 or 21/2 miles.
Walk again after lunch, this time up river.

Just had our lunch.
Was going to be chicken with homemade bread and stuffing, would have put up with no butter cos we've got mayo but someone forgot to get the chicken out to defrost.
Made do with beans on toast and fruit for afters.

I like beans.

Beans, beans, that wonderful fruit. The more you eat the more you toot.

Sitting here on the site relaxing, the field is lumpy bumpy but we found a level enough spot easily.
Drive up here was good, passed through Wolsingham, Frosterly, Stanhope, Eastgate.
All typical country villages, nice Weardale scenery.
Alston where the traveling folk have their summer horse fayre is just a few miles further on.
Passed loads of sheep all answering to Lambchop.
A vid of the site.

Over the wall is the river Wear, just a stream here.

All my family was originally from St Johns Chapel, Daddry Shield and Eastgate! (y)

After breakfast (remembered to get the waffles out to defrost), decided to get away home but instead of going back the way we came took a more scenic route; down to Middleton-in-Teesdale then across past Barnard castle, Raby castle, then on through bishop Auckland etc on to the A1M then head east at Durham and on home.
Sunday morning and very quiet on the roads.
Bout an extra 15 miles but worth it.
Now home, had lunch; all good removed from van.
Summary:-
Enjoyed our weekend, Pennine Lodge ccc cs is a lovely place to chill out.
The village, St John's chapel is so so.
Good walking up and down the river mostly on public footpaths. Also some hill walking possible but we are too wrinkly.
Will visit again but as part of a longer trip exploring Cumberland,Durham and Northumberland: not necessarily in that order.

But might try Derwent res,
Northumbria Water supervise the site at the Reservoir. You can pay the £10 at the shop at the Waterside Park and stay at any of the three car parks (1 at the Waterside Park or at the car parks at either end of the dam.

You could pay at the machine if you have 10 x £1 coins (they may now have upgraded them to contactless but not sure)

They have the same facility at a few other reservoirs including Hawkhope car park at Keilder and Fontburn Reservoir.

You can book and pay online at....

Thanks, I did know about fontburn.
Might be worth it if on the way somewhere to get an extra night away and have a walk round.
I presume the cost is only for overnight until 0800? and if you want to stay longer there will be a day charge?

We have only ever paid £10. Normally try to get pitched up round 1500-1600 and leave when we're ready about 0930.
The only exception to this was at Fontburn once when we stayed two nights and walked round the Reservoir during the day. We payed the day charge then. The wardens and staff at the shops are normally very laid back about it.

We stay at the Derwent often as my son and I go fishing sometimes. The staff are great and wouldn't charge you if your a sleepy head in morning. The Derwent has a great park for children also. But a nice secluded carpark nearer the reservoir for privacy.

Worth checking though for departure time but I've never felt hurried.

Also if your fishing your day ticket covers day parking only. Meaning we have often gone up on Friday evening paid £10 to stay over night and used park etc. Then in the morning our Saturday fishing permit covers parking until we bag up.

Ok, will check out the reservoirs.
Might be able to use one or more in our travels.
There's a lovely walk to and round Torside reservoir from Crowden ccc club site in North Derbyshire.
We've been 3 times up to now, it's a gorgeous area.
Usually on our way to North Wales.
Planning again for June/early July.
This time we'll visit Pows castle.

Although I've done a summary, one further thing to note.
When leaving the field was a slight drag when reversing off our grass pitch but once moving was OK, but did notice the depression where our tyres had sunk in.
Bearing in mind how dry it's been, the field could be tricky in wet conditions.
With that in mind although I've had a towing eye for years, I haven't got a tow .
Got a 10T tow rope on order now, hope it's never needed.

This is a cracking spot on Grassholme reservoir not far from Middleton in Teesdale. I often go up there on the bike. Best approached from the north though in anything bigger than a small camper van. If you can get parked over on the right on the grass it would be an excellent spot to spend the night. Often have a chat with the odd motorhomer in there.

I think its a tenner or something.

Also one at Selset round the corner

You can pay online but from memory there is no "Vodafone" signal at the Grassholme spot
