Have any of u funsters been around Dumfries and Galloway, were heading that way at the end of the month.
We are going around the coastal road to Oban then heading inland across to the A1 and back home .We only have a week so any advice on decent sites and places to visit would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. 😊

Well done Kirkudbright. We need more forward thinking Councils who are happy to provide good facilities for motorhomes and make a bit of money as well. We need more of these. We have been wondering where to take off to in late Sep and reading throught these posts just might provide the solution - hadn't even crossed my radar up until now, even though I went to school in the area

Garlieston Club Campsite.

not particularly cheap ( 3 people ) £42.60 per night but it has got a very nice view.
thanks to every one for there suggestions for our tour of Dumfries and Galloway, we had a lovely holiday there and we did eat at the Steampacket Inn Isle of Whithorn as suggested and it was brilliant , Daughter had Turbot and Mussel's stunning food.

yes loch ken is a nice campsite, if you have a boat or you fish even better, lovely part of scotland in our humble opinion, the galloway forest park is beautiful too, https://justgoexploring.com/destinations/camping-in-galloway-forest-park/

We went at Easter time and didn't book/touch a site. From the top of my head (Mr has the map links) we did ... pub stopover at Carsethorn cost of a meal but only 2-3 spaces and water. Night at the aforementioned aire at Kirkcudbright. Night at Wigtown Harbour, free but no facilities and a final night at Loch Clatteringshaws which was £8 per night with toilet facilities when cafe open and an elsan point. Lots of parking and toilets everywhere for days out.

We adore the place and will be back.

Many of the facilities in Kircudbright are Community funded rather than Council funded. These include the swimming pool and Silvercraigs Campsite. It took the community 10 years to raise the funds for the pool. I am looking forward to visiting the town in September, it seems like a very progressive community minded place.

Silvercraigs is a lovely site. Short walk into town.

Excellent effort by the community.👍

Our van is 7.5m & I can't think of a road which I wouldn't take it onto
Not particularly aimed at you Robert, more for non area readers, I'd advise caution if crossing or exploring the Rhinns of Galloway (for example, the back road from Portpatrick to Sandhead) It's not that you couldn't manage the run in a larger vehicle....it's just that our farming chums have some monstrously big vehicles these days and the sight lines can be very short due to the switchback nature of most of the Rhinns roads. Although some of them may be marked as "B" roads, "C" would be nearer the mark. My advice to the OP would be stick to "A" roads wherever practical even though it means adding some extra miles.....much preferable to meeting John Deere or Massey Ferguson face to face o_O....nice chaps that they might be :ROFLMAO:.

For the OP, Aird Donald campsite in Stranraer is a decent place to use as a base to explore the area. It's cash only sales and bookable on line, it's also a listed site with the C&CC. Stranraer has the usual big brands (Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi etc) but the smaller guys are there too such as bakers, butchers ,cafes and a few decent restaurants. Whatever your plans...and you've had some top tips above, enjoy your trip and beware, D&G has a strange habit of drawing people in (and keeping them there).

We've just come back from Sanquhar, just 27 miles north of Dumfries, but we wanted to see The Riding of the Marches. had a wonderful week and joined in all the festivities and probably will go back next year. Stayed on a cl site just out of town called Newark Farm, very clean and quiet and just £15 per night incl hook up. Drove up the Mennock Pass to Wanlockhead and saw some people panning for gold. The real gold is the stunning scenery and we might do a bit of wild camping here next year

Newark Farm CL usually VERY busy during Riding of the Marches, did you have to book. Note see you said it was quiet which does surprise me.
For info both the Wanlochhead Inn and the Hopetoun Arms Hotel in Leadhills allow overnighting in carpark. Wild camping up leadhills (although plenty of room) can get very very busy.

If planning Loch Ken and don't fancy the big commercial site there why not try the lovely CL just along road..and right on banks of river behind the Ken Bridge Hotel.!
Just onto the New Galloway to Newton Stewart road A712 is a CL called Brough, it's so peaceful with very little noise & stunning scenery.

Thanks for the replies, we'll have a rethink 🤪we only have a week due to work commitments where I'm off now .Will chat later.Good job I asked for advice obviously need it 🤣
We are doing D&G right now. It’s beautiful and very quiet so why would you rush through it? We started at Gretna Green and after 3 nights are at Newton Stewart. Fantastic scenery so far. Will take 2 weeks, plan to follow the coast to Ayr then head inland and eventually home. Check out the aires in south Ayrshire as I understand they opened 5 this year. Just had one night at the Aire in Kirkcudbright at £10 for the night inc hookup plus sea view.

My advice is to avoid the Aire in Ayr, it's in a very busy car park which is famous for Spotty McSpotface flying round the car park at 3.30 in the morning in his Uno round the toono with the techno up high. Girvan Aire is really nice though.

Is that because Ayr town centre rhymes with Ayrton Senna ? :imoutahere:

Music to my ears. Not only are we visiting Kircudbright but have booked a few days at The Brough too. It looks like we have made some very good choices.

You must have been our neighbours last night at the Swimming Pool?
We were in the gold coloured Burstner.
Just shopped at Newton Stewart, then the A714 & B7027 to Barrhill in South Ayrshire for lunch.
Lovely scenery...

But the B road was like a patchwork quilt but only passed one other car the whole way.

Got back yesterday, did a bit of a memory lane for the boss who used to go with her parents, didn't do the SWC 300 but went across to New England bay and return:
Night 1) Metal Bridge pub stop over Gretna turn off M6
2) Kirkcudbright ( Silvercraigs Community Caravan Park overlooking town.
3) New England Bay (Aire outside CAMC site water/elson/toilets and virtually feet from the shore
4) Garlieston CAMC (next to Harbour and Harbour Inn -good food). returning to England stayed at
5) Castle Point Dalbeattie lovely small site walked on coast path to Rockcliffe (40 mins 2 pubs selling food with lovely views over harbour and estuary.)
Lovely as there were not many midges 7.3m van and Labrador. You can also stay on the field behind the Steam Packet on the Isle of Whithorn food is supposed to be amazing.
