After reading the other thread about the lack of a spare wheel, I did not want to hijack the discussion, so here is a new question.

Our new Ducato based 'van came with a steel spare wheel and jack. Both VERY heavy.

As, there is no way I can lift the wheel, I have taken it out. Which leaves me thinking why not take out the jack as well?

I would be very interested in hearing about peoples' experiences in such a situation. Do the emergency services cope?
And at what cost?

No spare? Damage a rim and you will be waiting a long time for your breakdown service to find another for you. Along with a matching tyre if beyond a simple puncture.
If they can't find a matching tyre to your others fitted then you get billed for two tyres (in France at least where tread patterns on an axle have to match as far as i heard))

Fit the admittedly heavy spare in the underslung cradle at the back if you can but even if too hard for you, the breakdown services can extract it for you.

I think the dealer Fitted the spare (in the Garage) for the UK market.

Good point about the breakdown services. Green Flag if anybody knows the answer.

It has been removed to recover some payload. Not because I can't lift it.

I would still like to hear of any experiences.

Thank you for not hijacking. You're a true Gent. I have noticed some of my threads going off topic a little but still a good read.

Some great points are being made on your thread too. 👍

It says in the handbook. It is assumed you have a spare unless the handbook says you have only the gunk.
I was reading the Ts & Cs for a breakdown service I was considering, and it says that I must have the manufacturer approved gunk (if no spare wheel)

This is not entirely true. Some garages will insist on replacing both but it is not law and many will replace just the one you need (unless, of course, the other needs replacing). We live in France and have had two tyres on two separate vehicles replaced without the need for both on the same axle doing.

Our French MH never had a spare and we don't have a lot of payload to be able to carry one, either.

Absolutely keep the spare
If you travel in Europe without a spare you could wait forever, keep it and let the breakdown services change it for you .

I am sure I read somewhere that in one country in Europe, can’t remember which, you had to have a jack.

You would think that the EU would make one law to cover every country, especially when it makes sense and they like to tell people what to do. What exactly do they do in that massive building in Brussels?.

This will stir the must have a spare wheel / tyre

Nope we do not have one on any of our vehicles we have breakdown cover if for any reason we need a spare the nice man from the AA RAC Green flag et al will either provide a get you home wheel or get you a new tyre.

I once did change the back wheel of my Fiat van following a puncture using the standard jack supplied. It was hard work the use the jack first but became easier as I got the van higher off the ground.I didn't actually lift the wheel. I dragged it from its fitting from under the van and once I got the wheel in position in front of the hub I lowered the van until the lug nuts were level with Lug holes.

Gunk is. O good if this happens to you, which it did to me in Germany four weeks ago!

We have had tyre problems in both France and Spain . Both sorted by the breakdown service BUT in neither case did they have a jack, or as far as I could see any tools at all. Keep the spare and the jack .

Not disagreeing with you, but if in the middle of no where and no phone signal which has happened to me, then I was glad of my spare and jack.
All pot luck I guess.

Wouldn’t be without a spare, jacking equipment and blocks of wood as well.

Mind you, if you aren’t able to do the actual work, it’s another matter, but definitely worth checking with insurance and breakdown service.
