Ducato Handbrake Seized - Help?

These electric button hand brakes can not be used in an emergency as they don’t work if the car is moving.
Hired a car a few year ago that had an electric handbrake it was a VW Passat. Found out by accident if when stationary if you put your foot on the throttle fairly hard the brake automatically came off.

I was taught to point the front wheels to the kerb if the vehicle could roll forwards and visa versa, and leave the vehicle in gear, never use the handbrake. The wheels would have to mount the kerb and pull out the gutter, perfectly safe.

Come to a stop using the foot brake and the handbrake is applied automatically.
In gear, clutch just moving with throttle slightly pressed and auto hold releases. All happens in an instant so no roll back on steep gradients.
Try that with the actual electric hand brake and you'll either stall or burn out the clutch

It was an auto plonk your foot hard on the throttle it would fly off and you went shot forward or back.
 
the advice on leaving in gear is ok until it sits for weeks/months and the clutch binds on. Oh and an automatic in park relies on the locking pawl, which on most modern vehicles is a small metal pin that is too easy to shear off

When I learnt to drive, I had lived all my life on a steep hill. The first thing I learnt was handbrake, in reverse gear and wheels turned to the curb. My parents had several vehicles hit by runaway vehicles. The worst being a 7.5 tonne delivery truck with the engine running, bounced of several parked cars ground a groove along a neighbor's wall and came to rest on a main road, having just missed a double decker bus
 
I always leave my vehicles in 1st gear when level or facing up hill and reverse when facing downhill.

It matters not which direction the car is facing for your choice of gear selection (the engine compression is the same irrespective of the direction that you attempt to rotate the crank).

The gear selected should be the lowest ratio whether that be first gear or reverse gear. In the case of my MH (Ducato Jtd) it’s first gear; reverse gear is much higher.

The thing with American cars they call a emergency brake is because they leave their automatic cars in park which lock's the gearbox no need for a parking brake. Plus a stick shift is beyond most of their ability.
Comfomatic box - no park! As I found out wish a shock having parked up at a service station, turned round to put the kettle on and found the world passing by with increasing speed.

Well it is a manual box with a few add ons, it makes enough noise it you stop the engine with it in neutral. you can't say it didn't warn you:LOL:
 
Didn't put the handbrake on quite enough parked on a slight hill adjacent to our Spanish apartment. Looked out over the balcony to see the hire car across the road bit further down. Rushed down there just as the Guardia were passing. :rolleyes:
