Ducato Bonnet Paint Peeling - How To Remedy It?

No, the ones I have are gooduns,

If one want quality which includes a bare metal rub down, top class welding if needed, 3 coats of finest paint and 6 coat of lacquer, one has to pay for it.
Anyone else, it's twice that and his customers of 25yrs plus are happy to pay, if I was younger, so would I. 👍
That’s high quality work, (too high for a Ducato?), but is definitely expensive.

Why would anyone opt for £4000 to paint a motorhome bonnet when an average cost would do a “good” job, better than FIAT’S original anyway.

I agree with your comments in post #30. Keep mechanicals in top condition as far as possible if you want a trouble free trip. I use a mechanic friend for my servicing and repairs as I know he does an excellent job with no skimping. However, I have never heard of anyone’s vehicle breaking down as a result of a “poor” paint job.

Still if you are running a RR you need to pay RR prices, but for my Ducato FIAT prices will do and I even consider them high.😉

In my experience, Fiat paint peal just doesn't just happen on the bonnet but all over the vehicle, especially the roof and sides of the windscreen.
To me, that's an all over respray IF one really wants it to look correct?
I'm not that fussed! 😄

PS. Now my mate is no longer as involved with the Touring Car Racing world, most of his work is now keeping a fleet of black RR hearses looking smart. 👍

PS. Just to clarify, it was an all over, full body, respray I was quoted for, not just the bonnet! 😄

I have taken my peeling Citroen Relay bit by bit and the only things not repainted are the roof and the 2 back doors. A Mate told me he had had an offer to respray his completely for £2750, which seemed a good deal to me.

Hi everyone :)

On our Ducato bonnet, the paint has started to peel off in a couple of places...one rather large bit right in the middle! I've read before that this is a known problem, since there's only a single layer of paint on there anyway  As such, I'm guessing there are a few people out there with the same problem. So, how did you remedy yours? Professional respray? Remove all paint and polish up the metal? Put some decals over the bad bits? Any other ideas? Pics of your before and after would be good :) Thanks :)
I had the same problem on my 2015 Bessacarr, I had to have the bonnet colour matched and re-painted after trying to hide the damage with a bonnet bra.

I had the problem on a 2002 ducato on the passenger door. Went back to metal, primed, sprayed and laquered but started peeling again after 12 months. I've done similar jobs on cars before with no problems. I left it alone afterwards and as it wasn't rusting was happy enough.

The paint finish on our bonnet and pillars is very dull, despite using a few waxes and polishing. I have thought about a vinyl wrap whilst it’s still intact.

Nitromoors do an excellent solution rather than loads of rubbing down

Don't polish it too much

Since I first posted this, and after having a break from the forum for a while, the paint is peeling in more and more places. Eventually, we'll need the whole can respraying but, in the meantime, I've decided I'm going to buy some yellow adhesive vinyl roll and cut out stars in various sizes to cover the unpainted areas. As I get another one, I'll make another star, until I have so many it needs a new paint job. The yellow will match the yellow on the current decals, so shouldn't look out of place :)

Go for it . I started with plain grey sticker then put beware of the dog sticker on top.
Eventually the rain.got behind them and they failed (5years)
So now I'm looking for replacement stickers

Do you know where I can get beware of the elephant ?

The patch is a little larger 🐘

Will this do? :LOL::LOL:

Consider having the bonnet wrapped. It will also sto the stone chips if done properly.

Just note the warning in post #15 - finish is only as good as what’s underneath. My 2013 Bessacarr/Ducato bonnet is doing the same. Going to wait until selling and see how bad it is!

As mentioned above it's incompatible undercoat and top coat.
I had the bonnet resprayed some years ago. They took it off, completely stripped all the paint off and redid it. Has lasted well. Unfortunately the rest of the cab is going the same way now and the painter I asked reckoned it was a full restrip and respray job, best to do the whole cab area even though the doors are still not too bad. Don't think he wanted the job though, mentioned £1800 - might have a go at the worst bits myself when it gets warmer!

My Fiat Ducato is exactly the same. It's really unsightly. However I plan to have it done by a local specialist, who has already done work on my car.

Don't know whether it's as easy on a Ducato but when my son wanted a respray Abarth bonnet it was cheaper to buy a replacement from breakers (including fitting 🙂)

Now this is a Spooky thread. In the last 2 weeks I've noticed two 'blobs' of discolouration on the bonnet of my 2022 plate Lanzarotte Grey Fiat Ducato campervan. Not particularly happy about it given that I've only done 12,000 miles from new. I will keep an eye on this thread as best course of action.
