Does anyone have details of their Ad Blue usage for a year old Ducato? eg what mileage might I expect for 10 litres?

I know it depends on many things, including driving style, but any details would be useful.

And does anyone know the tank size? The manual is less than useless.

It greatly depends on your style of driving, if you are doing short and stop start journeys you will use more than if you are doing 1 hour plus journeys on decent A roads or motorways.
I believe usage depends on your exhaust/ cat system getting hot enough.

Think we use more than 3L per 1000.
I would also advise topping it up every 1000m if you can and keep it full - less air to get crystals in teh tank, and also on mine (2020) first time it ran low I filled up straight away and THEN had "engine won't restart if stopped" message!!!! Took 30+ mins of driving for it to go to "low ad blue" to "normal" again - was worrying at the time so now won't let it go low.

Thanks - that's roughly in line with what I expected.

So hopefully a full tank would last around 6000 miles.
You will get a warning long before 6000 miles.
I think the first warning appears at just under half full.
Some people wait for the warning to appear and then top up.
Others (me included) just top it up every 1000 to 2000 miles.

I’ve found that ambient temperatures also appear to have an influence on consumption. Seemed to use less in warmer climes - but maybe that’s also down to better driving conditions generally?

Mine does around 2500 with a 10l top up before the light comes back on. Usually add 10l within a 100 miles or so of light coming back on and it always takes the full 10l, never tried putting more in so not sure how much was left in tank when light came on.

I keep a log of fuel and adblue fillings.

Last time I filled up at a pump (in Spain), and it took 15.08 litres, having done 3680 miles since the last top-up.
That's 244 miles per litre, if that helps. The previous filling showed 260 miles per litre. So if you plan on 250 miles per litre you are not going to be far off.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info - and Dolmen and Brize for the details.

So assuming a tank size of just aound 19 litres, that would be nearer 5000 miles than 6000.

We are off to Morocco soon, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to keep topped up (ie. as the warning light comes on).

Top up before you leave Spain, and when you get back to Spain. Get the myLPG.eu app and it will tell you where the pumps are.

You are not going to do 5000 miles in Morocco.

Definitely not 500 miles! Hopefully we can fill up in Spain (floods permitting) just before sailing. But the warning light does come on very early ...

Yes, I have the app, thanks.

I just keep it topped up, and add a spot of additive too.

Some horror stories of what happens if it gets blocked, or runs out.

We run a fleet of Transits.
As a 'rule of thumb' we work on 1 litre of AdBlue per tank of fuel.

On a recent 3k trip to Spain over just 16 nights, we worked out that we are using 8L every 1k miles.
Engine is low mileage, pace was around about 65mph on the motorways but, not sure if this makes a difference or not, but we are 5T

I must say I was shocked at the amount we are using, never used anything like this in my cars, but not as shocked as I was in the price comparrison between here and abroad.

It's used for catalysing NOx, which are made when the engine is running hard and hot. So pootling around town isn't too bad. Keeping your foot down on the motorway for extended periods is when it's used more.

Our light came on at about 1800 miles and it took 10l to fill.

Our light comes on after about 3100 miles. I do a few hundred miles to make sure 10 litres will fit then stick it in.

Ours does @ 1500-1700 miles befire the light comes on so @ 160 miles per litre.

2021 burstner, approx 1500 miles uses 10ltr never put more in but always takes it wait for light. 150 miles per litre, my fiat garage told me never fill to brim, the electronics don't like it & needs costly reprogramming to reset & maybe draining.

1000 miles and just under 10 liters added to top up ( 2023 Ducato)

These vans are using a hellover lot of Adblue arnt they!
Just traded our BMW X1 2.0Ltr 187Bhp, 4x4 Diesel had it over 5 years, only 23K miles, didnt top up the Adblue tank once during time of ownership, no lights to indicate it needed topped up either.
1Ltr per 250 miles seems very high to me, anyone been given a reason why yet?

Lots of variations!

Unfortunately I haven't kept a detailed record, as (so far) Ad Blue has always been readily available. I'll try and measure on the way down through Spain, but my guess is that it would be around 200 miles per litre (but I hope more - always the optimist!)

That's about OK going by what ours uses Paul (y)

My guess would be that to run a huge coachbuild down a level motorway at an even speed, you're probably pushing the engine at 100bhp, so about two thirds of its power. So it'll get quite warm after a couple of hours.

Whereas a little X1 that has more ponies probably only needs 30bhp to sustain motorway speeds.

Adblue is needed to reduce NOx produced by a heavily worked, hot engine. So a motorhome is going to use a lot more than a car.

The adblue is a lot cheaper in Spain compared to Britain, what I found is that it tells me to top up earlier than expected. What I have read is that you will have used more than 10l before the light comes on, on a couple of occasions I have added only 8l once the light came on.

So another example of rip off Britain on Ad Blue.
Just out of interest I never used pumped Ad Blue in the UK, whats the price difference between UK and EU.
Thanks
