Yes. That is correct. Although it’s not the easiest place to get a vernier. It’s a see it, or touch it situation. You can do both.

With my 2006 5 speed coupled to my 2.8JTD, I make a rule of only changing up to 5th gear, once the engine temp gauge rises. I know it’s not related to the gearbox oil, but I reckon that by the time the gauge moves to the 1/4 mark, the 5th gear must be pretty splash fed by then 👍🏻
That’s a good move. 5th gear relies totally on oil splash. It’s a good rule to drive gently for the first 10minutes anyway promoting engine long life as well. 👌👍

Agreed PP, its what I always do but somehow the 5th gear still failed at the Spanish border, leaving me 4 to get home with thankfully. I'm still not sure why it failed and the gear teeth broke away. I've had the mohome 10 years so don't think I can blame the previous owners.

Most gearbox failures are due to lack of oil changes. It’s often overlooked on services. I change my gearbox oil every 2 years. Overkill possibly. I know many manufacturers state gear oil is for life, but being an auto mechanic for 45 years I’ve found that gear oil changes save you a fortune in the long run. That’s assuming you keep the van for long periods.

I’ve had mine 12 years, but nursed it nearly every time I’m out in it, but still they can fail. I did add some Slick 50 Gearbox oil additive some years back, but you never know if these things work, but still made me feel good about popping it in 👍🏻. The instructions said to suck out a small amount, the same as the quantity to be added, but it’s not a lot, so just popped it in.

Its a good point you all make. Particularly with this "add on fifth" regular oil changes are a good idea. Even though its only just been changed, by the garage, I"ll do another one in Spring prior to our mainland Europe trip. Cheers.

Apparently if you have a c class you don't need to take the gearbox out to change the 5th gear
To be honest I cannot see why you would on an A class as the actual chassis section at the front would be exactly the same as a panel van or C class chassis cab?
My last one was a C ,so original cab & 5th gear is changeable on the side of the road if you know how to do it.

on a panel van you remove the front near side wheel and take the panel of behind it this gives access to the gearbox on mine this panel is not removable

Many thanks to Paul and Chrissy for sorting me out with a 3D printed breather cap that is a perfect fit. And thanks to Landy Andy for the initial measurements, we've learned that the white spigot and black spigot are slighter different diameters. Cheers all!

I do the same with our 2003 2.8jtd.

Also change gearbox oil every 2-3 years.
