After having the fifth gear replaced recently I thought I would take a look for the gearbox breather in case I need to top it up. I think I found it but if you look at the bottom left of the photo it doesn't look like others Ive seen as its open at the top. Is this right or should there be a top to stop water ingress? And how do I know if it needs topping up? Thanks in advance.

I have a 2003 2.8 jtd and the breather looks similar to that and just pulls off and snaps back on again.
It was under the air filter housing and next to the reversing light switch

That’s it but the cap is missing. It needs one to stop water getting in.
You can’t top up as there’s no level indicator of any kind, you have to drain and refill with the correct amount. I’ve recently done mine on our 2014 2.3 150bhp 6 speed manual.

Many thanks, just need to find some kind of cap now. Doesn't seem to be something thats obviously available. The oil was obviously changed as part of the fifth gear fix but I don't know how much they put in and I can't ask as there was a few problems with their service overall.

On early models they had a dipstick at the back. With fifth gear the level had to be increased by 20mm when full . I'd find out how much they recommend for the box & add half a litre to that amount

Yep,I think I'll add 300 ml just to be on the safe side. Too much and its going to come out the breather anyway. Just need to botch together something to stop any water or debris from getting in (I found a very small nut just by the breather pipe, unlikely it could have got it in but........). Scrappers in the morning and if failing that it could be a piece of hose in an upside U shape, or some cap thats a near fit if I can find one. Don't want to waste the stupid amount of money I spent getting it fixed.

Strange, if they emptied the box then 2.7 - 2.9 litres should have gone in. Somehow they drained just the fifth??

Be careful that water hasn’t entered box via windscreen drains. If you can‘t get a cap you could use a hose up and then downward

Went the scrappers and found a "u" shaped pipe (off

a Ford) that is a snug fit on the breather tube. There is an approx 6" run pointing down toward the fifth gear casing. Problem solved for a quid.

Yes, you are correct, on this year and model and many others. Mines a 2002 2.8 jtd.

They have breather pipes but not breather caps which is what I originally needed before Monday. Thanks anyway. I assume the breather caps come with gearboxes only. Someone with a 3D printer could make some money making small items like this that go missing in the motorhome community.

They do. PaulandChrissy is the resident 3D printer here.

We are always here to help if we can. Little caps like that are pretty simple to make up. All I need is a pattern to work from, or in this case as you don’t have a cap, some accurate dimensions.

If it’s not to much trouble can you give me the external diameter. Are you able to get a vernier gauge in there.
Cheers PaulandChrissy
