Don't You Just Love Windows Updates!

Why would anyone with active brain cells run Edge? Apologies to anyone here using it! I have a mix of browsers, (writing this in Opera) and Edge/Bing still tries to butt in. It's a PITA and not really a very good browser. While I use MS Windows and Office, I see the pressure to use their browser as a damn cheek! Certainly not going to choose my OS so I can run it! I don't use their media player and lots of other stuff either, but at least they are relative easy to uninstall or ignore.

It seems from dealing with a fellow committee member who only uses Apple that there are some issues with video files. She sent me some video's to edit that were in proprietary .mov format. I can import that no problem but Apple prevent my software provider from being able to write it out without an expensive licence, so I sent it back as mp4. Again her Apple device opened and played it no problem, but she could make no further edits. It wasn't an issue I wanted to waste time digging into so I simply re-edited to her instructions and resent it.

I too have XP as a bootable on the tower and use it when someone brings me an old video camera for capturing that does not support communication with the later firewire drivers in Win7. I use a very old piece of simple capture software from the old Avid company before Pinnacle bought them out and ruined them! It, and the OS are completely unsupported but works when nothing newer does. I can only capture as AVI. but once on the disk of course can do whatever I want with it with later software.

I think your committee member may need to format and export as Mp4, iMovie exports everything in Mp4 except when you select to export in Best Quality, in which case the export will be in .mov format with a high bitrate and file size. iMovie will edit in the new HEVC H.265 format, but will convert to Mp4 on export.

You can use what ever browser you wish but it will always be built with later tech in mind, so old Computers will struggle with the later and more secure browsers

30+ years in IT means I know a bit about technology :)
As Bluetooth is so ubiquitous these days I would expect that a responsible company would point out in sales blurb where they had deliberately built in a restriction, rather than hiding it in technical notes by the way the first link doesn't work).
Ah 30 years in IT then you will know the acronym Read the (*) Manual. Apple have been quite specific in how to transfer files from an iPad and iPhone, t really isnt thier fault, it really is user perception i'm not blaming you but should you down load an app from the store it seems your wish would be granted

My iPad is connect to the mesh network automatically only because I have set it up to do so. It does not connect to the router unless I take action. Neither will it connect to any other network unless I specifically allow it.
Like yours, my mesh network covers the garden and outbuildings and that is fine when I wish to use WiFi but that does not help in this case, obviously.

Why would I want to use Bluetooth? For the reasons previously explained.
My goodness, I think we all set our phones to only connect to the networks we wish, it would be negligent if we didn't. A Home mesh network not connect to a router I guess is novel, if its about security I am sure with your IT background you understand how devices can be hidden along with the use of firewalls etc but your choice just seems to make life hard.

Be interesting to hear if you down load one of the apps so you can use bluetooth file transfers

Coolcats The Opera browser restrictions only apply to new installs. If you already had it on 7 and 8 it still updates. I also have Safari running on both the XP and 7 boots but Apple then dropped it for the MS OS. And yes I know RTFM well. Thanks for the info on iMovie. I have forwarded to my committee colleague. My software will read and write both H264 and H265 formats, as well as all the M2 series, FLV, 3GP, ASF, DIVX and many others except .mov!

Last week, my Win 11 laptop fell over whilst performing an update. I wasn't aware it was happening, and without looking at the screen, I closed it. After that, it wouldn't update. After 1.1/2 hours on the phone to Lenovo ( it's still under warranty) they said to contact Microsoft. More diagnosis and I was told it needed a scratch install of Win 11. It took ages to download onto my very old laptop, and after 2 hours, once it had downloaded I suggested that they call me back the next day, which they did. Another hour later and it was all done. Luckily most data was backed up to Google Drive or my NAS, but it's taken a few days of slowly reinstalling the software.

I have turned off auto updates!!

All that makes my life hard is Apple's insistence on not properly implementing a universal standard.
As far as I was aware I had RTFM. There is no mention in the item description of any restriction. Indeed, text such as "shoot, edit and share", with no mention of restrictions, implies none exist.

As per my initial post, I bought the iPad as much as anything to see if they were any better than years ago when I had my last experience of Apple machines. As I was not particularly impressed even before discovering the restriction I am not motivated to download an app just to make up for Apple's failings.

Is your PC currently running Windows 10 or Windows 11?

24H2 is the latest, current version of Windows 11

If your PC isn't capable of running Windows 11 (due to hardware issues notably the lack of a Trusted Platform Module and the inability to run Secure Boot) then you are stuck on Windows 10, the final stable release being 22H2.

More significantly, if you are stuck on Windows 10, support finishes in October this year, with no more feature updates, and more importantly, no more security updates.
Apologies for the delay responding! The PC was running the 23H2 version of Windows 11 and the message in Windows Update said this was now obsolete, or words to that effect. The problem for me was it gave no guidance on what to do as there was no option to download the latest version 24H2.

After quite a lot of Googling during which I discovered I was far from alone with this problem I eventually resolved things but it took a while.

What MS should have done is point me to the Windows PC Health Check tool, which told me what was missing then the Windows Update Assistant which I used to install 24H2. It wasn't a simple task as it needed changes in the BIOS to implement the security stuff which apparently are not normally implemented by default in most installations, including mine, which is only a 18 month old PC.

I hear your opinion on what your expectation is but it doesn’t mean it’s correct. There is a clear description, and is well documented it is jut you have not read it!

if you want actual magic it all works seamlessly within the Apple ecosystem, Apple have little influence over what Microsoft chooses to do. Personally I wouldn’t expect a surface tablet to have the same functionality within a Apple enviroment…that’s a road to insanity 😉

Apple have implemented Bluetooth to a universal standard my iPhone connects to my Hot Tub, Car, HiFi etc without any fuss,

You are blaming Apple for a feature you wish to use on a windows machine which may be the root issue regarding Bluetooth a far greater systemic issue than Apple itself.

Transfer files between your iPad and your computer

There are multiple ways to transfer your photos, videos, and other files between your iPad and computer.

Quickly transfer files wirelessly: See Use AirDrop on iPad to send items to nearby Apple devices.

Use iCloud: See Automatically keep your files up to date with iCloud.

Use an external storage device, a file server, or a service like Box or DropBox: See Transfer files from iPad to a storage device, a server, or the cloud.

Use a cable: For Mac, see Connect iPad and your computer with a cable.

For Windows devices, see Transfer files between your PC and devices with iTunes.

Important: Transferring, sharing, or syncing may be restricted for some types of data, such as files saved in an app’s proprietary format, files saved in older software versions, and files protected by copyright

Just to add, I am not immune from thinking something ‘should’ work or additional kit is required but then kick myself for not fully reading 📖 the documentation. We all have expectations of technology and often disappointed ☹️ when something doesn’t work….but it doesn’t make a product crap.

Crap is your word not mine ;)

I don't think anyone apart from Coolcats has used derogatory language about Apple. In an all Apple environment everything works seamlessly which is great. Indeed if Apple are the main devices then interoperability with Active Directory is now much easier tahn it was even 15 years ago.

However, the same is true of an all Windows environment (although MS dropped support for phones.)

From bitter experience going back about 30 years or more, I have found that interoperability with Windows is easy with Linux, several flavours of Unix, Netware (remember that), OS/2 and Android. There is no doubt it is a PITA with MACOS, but less so with later versions of IOS. Add in a few proprietary file types, whereas all the rest use standards, and it creates issues for users that really should not be there. I have told people in the past that if they want to go Apple, they need to think that they need to buy everything Apple to avoid any interoperability issues. It's fine saying to read the manual, but you should not have too when using industry standard facilities such as Bluetooth..... it should just work.

I don't do much now, but am responsible for the AV gear at the village hall. That has an HDMI output to the projector and Bluetooth for audio. Windows and Linux devices always attach with no difficulties, (once they find an HDMI port or I loan them a USB-C to HDMI adaptor) but while I have now successfully attached a number of Macbooks, I have had real issues with ipads and iphones (audio only) and more than once have got an event out of trouble by a USB stick to move the files to one of my laptops and run the event from that? The Bluetooth receiver is a standard unit hooked into the audio system. Why it will not work with some Apple devices I do not know, there isn't usually time to find out as the event needs to start so I fall-back to what I know will work.

I can’t see where I was derogatory about Apple devices

There have been a few documented instances in the past of bluetooth issues but the later devices appear to work fine,

The windows issue mentioned here is not a fault as it is documented how to transfer files, and therefore the device is working as intended.

I am not disputing that. However, when someone presents me with an Apple device to transfer files from, I do not have access to a manual to read and if every other OS makes it intuitive and easy, why can't Apple? I should not need to read a manual for something so basic. If I get in a different car and need to refuel, with one notable exception (Toyota Previa) I can easily find how to open the fuel tank inlet and have never needed to read a manual. If it was untrue the miriad of hire cars that never had a manual in them, would have been stranded out of fuel all over the place.

Oh come on, it’s easy and intuitive,99.9% of people use wifi and if you want to use blue tooth as they say there an app for that.

So by refusing to use the most common way of connecting to a home network or down loading an app to make the feature you desire work you’re saying it’s apples fault, bit strange to be honest. My e-bike connects to my phone via blue tooth which I use to upgrade the bikes software but I had to down loading an app to do it should I blame Apple for that using the ‘it should just work’ as ‘it’s Bluetooth’ I have half a dozen apps that I down loaded to make stuff work.

A home mesh network not connected to a router is novel and probably <0.1% of individuals would choose to isolate a computer that is connected to a router. The whole point of a network is for devices to talk to one another.

So let’s blame Apple who give clear information about features, and how to connect and share files, you do have access to manuals which change all the time and are freely available via the support and search button. If people do not read the manual they will always be disappointed or caught out…it’s the way of the world and I’m not criticising any individual.

Apple also are happy to take a product back (with a time frame) if you’re disappointed with it. Your not forced to keep it.

Regarding cars oh yes they have manuals and if you don’t read them you will not find all the features etc but just like an iPad.

Want to use a dvd on a mac buy an optical drive want one on a windows machine I’m sure someone still makes them with one built in.

Oh and just to say u less your ‘know’ how to set a machine up to share files it remains a closed system it’s locked by default so you would have to read the manual if you have not carried out the task before so I’m not sure your argument of not having access to manuals stacks up.

You don’t have to buy everything Apple, but. No manufacturer windows Linux android makes all their features accessible and the same as every other manufacturer they would be naive to do so where is the market diffraction if they did?

How do you avoid permanently losing all your data on Apple devices.
On every device I've come across the owner has mistyped their passcode a couple of times and boom Armageddon for all your data.

Fable: That doesn't make sense, the device does not wipe the data, it may lock you out, like any device back up your data and use time machine. If my Mac was stollen as it was in 2019, it has remote wipe as soon as its booted up, but I have time machine and backups, I purchased a new machine and BOOM all my data was back using Time machine....

I have a Windows Surface Tablet which I don't use much other than when travelling in the MH when I need a Windows device for some of my amateur radio stuff.

I dusted it off and fired it up today as I new there was a big Windows update called 24H2 which came out since it was last used.

It first decided that it's current version of Windows 23H2 was out of date and it needed to download several updates for 23H2 which involved several restarts.

Some 3 hours later 🥱 23H2 was fully up to date. At which point it discovered 24H2 needed to be downloaded which I could have told it at the start.

24H2 is a big download and it will still be downloading when I go to bed tonight I expect.

On the upside I was relieved the tablet was compatible with 24H2 as our home PC wasn't until I upgraded the CPU and fiddled with the BIOS to implement some security stuff which took a lot of head scratching. :)
Completely went right over my head

Here is something easier than Bluetooth, and you have free 5Gb storage on iCloud so its even easier to share a document

What can you do with iCloud on a Windows device?

Using that would basically be another faff about to compensate for Apple's shortcomings (or policies if you wish).

In any case, having studied the terms & conditions of several cloud storage systems in depth (aka RTFM) when working as a Data Protection Officer I use none of them.

I guess you don't use online banking (Cloud storage), I believe you mentioned Chromebook which is also cloud storage with google of all people who harvest data like its going out of fashion. Use eBay? Amazon? Online shopping of any form its all cloud storage and often AWS.

You are of course free to use any app or technology or not as the case may be, but it does mean your making life harder for yourself Bluetooth has its own security issues which I am sure your aware of.

Its not that you cannot share a file with windows its just that you choose not to use a method that is open and available but as they say thats your propagative. In the mean time our business thrives on the platform and would if we had chosen windows ;)

I much prefer a manual than all these companies that only put detailed instructions in videos. Really drive me mad as its not always conveneient to watch a video and having sound up is really annoying to my better half and is frankly rude when in company.

Once you're locked out there is no way to regain access. The apple password resets rely on you remembering some long forgotten password from when you setup the account so never works.
I've got a couple of bricked iPhones and an iPad that are just ornaments nowadays.

I do not store any of my banking information using the cloud. My bank may choose to do so, rather than on its own servers, but that is their decision, for which they are responsible. Similarly, how eBay, Amazon &c store their data is their decision. I have accounts with various organisations for transacting business with them, just as I did before the Internet (let alone cloud computing) was invented. I do not, though, subject my data to what I consider unsafe terms & conditions associated with storing it on iCloud, Google Drive &c &c (see https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/alexa-is-listening-and-recording.318966/)

There is no need, at all, to use cloud storage for a Chromebook which has sufficient onboard storage for the small files I wish to store on it from time to time.

I have been well aware of Bluesnarfing &c for over 20 years and take necessary precautions to protect myself but my use of Bluetooth makes life easier for me, rather than harder (except for with the iPad, as discussed in this thread, because Apple chooses to implement a restricted version of an open standard for its own ends). As already said, I can't be bothered to faff about to compensate for Apple's shortcomings, especially when I have alternatives which work seamlessly.

Yes. I was lucky with the iPad because I found that I still had an Apple account associated with an iPod that I used to own. I thought I had deleted the account but it is some years since I gave the iPod away so can't remember exactly what I did at the time (there was a lot going on so maybe I made a mistake). Luckily I remembered the correct password (with the correct case elements) within the allowed number of attempts.

Whilst it may be true you cannot log in to your personal items it doesn’t mean they are bricked.

My wife tried several passwords on her iPad when we were away and it securely locked itself, there is however an unlock procedure we followed when we returned home and guess what…all the data was there and why was this because it did not wipe the iPad and had we have had to wipe the machine we also have the iPad backed up so honestly what you are saying I would suggest with the greyest of respect is down to the user not the device.

If you do not know how, you could call Apple they will always try and help remotely, book a slot at an Apple Store they will help you get back in or go to an independent apple retailer they will also help. Apple phones and iPads don’t just brick as you put it because you have lost your password.

My account is with Apple. My copies of the music I bought are held locally to me. Where Apple store their records of what music I bought from Apple is up to Apple. That is not the same as subjecting a file I created offline to their Ts&Cs.

I used the proper implementation of Bluetooth on my Android 2in1 and my problems dissolved.

Anyway, we are only talking about toys, not serious tools so it's an annoyance rather than anything serious :)
