Does anyone have any experience of slide out toilets/showers?

Following CazPaul's suggestion to look at RP Motorhomes Harrogate, the smallest Mercedes looks very interesting and the slide out part makes the internal space much better. I'm sure - as a complete newbie - there are lots of things that I need to be aware of . Please tell me if you have any experience of the slidey bit. Thanks

With regard to the OP, you are planning on spending a lot of money, and unless money is no object, I would first go and have a look at one of the major shows at the NEC when they open for business again. This is only our first motorhome but having had 5 different caravans and hired even more motorhomes, what initially appeals as layout quickly changes. Even with a very clear list of requirements, we still spent 2 days narrowing down all the options and rethinking everything, but we ended up with the ideal one for us. Everything is a compromise and the trick is to end up with as few compromises as possible. You also need to consider how you will use the motorhome, and again that will change as a newbie as you experience motorhoming a few times.

Bothered about what? All vans are subjective and what suits one doesn't suit another.

If I was looking for a small van under 6 metres, go anywhere vehicle, and had plenty of money it would be a consideration for sure.
Might help if you read back just one post.

IH motorhomes make a PVC with a slide out. UK based company, and people who buy from them seem to be happy about the experience.
Thanks, Can you please point me in the direction of that info...I've had a look at IH motorhomes website and can't find anything.

Thanks, our issue is timing. Husband will be out of work after July and his industry not likely to pick up again for another year. Would love to go to shows but can't see that being a possibility for quite a while. We need to make the most of his time off work. Hope to have something and head off somewhere in September.
I think we have ruled out the 4WD option after receiving advice on this forum (so that's saving a bit!) We did camp for 3 months many years ago in the USA in a three man tent (and travelled in a 18 year old cadillac we bought for $500) (did 12 thousand miles without an issue) so we kind of know what to expect and hope for in a travel sense.

I suspect you will find RP motorhomes are all made to order, a bit like our Murvi. And like Murvi they are possibly only just now getting back to work in a limited way and will have a backlog to clear. The upshot is even if you were to place an order tomorrow the chances of them completing it by September are slim. Typical Murvi lead times are six months, our was even longer! That's assuming they can get hold of the base van quickly, MB factories have probably also been shut and only now reopening.

If you want a fixed bed in something not too long I suggest having a look at some of the Cathargo Compactline A class range. If you can find what you want in stock somewhere you could take delivery in plenty of time for a September trip. The RP vehicles look good but they are very much a low-volume niche product I think and there are plenty of alternatives.

I have looked on the IH owners Club for sale and cannot find one with slide out. The newest for sale is a 630RL which is the same as ours and doesn’t fit your original spec, of pop top and 6m.

You started out with 4 wheel drive, then rear wheel drive and now looking at front wheel drive. A big difference.

We were shown one by very proud owners about 3 years ago in an Aire in Portugal. I remember it because it was the only slide out I had ever seen on a PVC. The slide out increased the size of the lounge.

Unusually IH also buy their own motorhomes back from their customers and and sell them second hand. By coincidence, if you click on the second hand section of their website and scroll down you will see an example of the exact model I saw that they actually have for sale. It is the N-630SL model up for sale at £55,995.

As I understand it IH will make a model to your requirements as well, or change a standard one to suit your needs, but that will cost a lot more.

Camping and motorhoming are considerably different in many respects, certainly so in the US from experience. I've had 40 years of camping, and spent 6 months in the US on motorhome holidays!

Frankly if you want something by September, I would trawl as many motorhome dealers as possible, and look at as many makes as possible and really explore the type of motorhoming you want to do. It will have to be something in stock at the current time.

I cannot see much advantage in that layout, but a few disadvantages.
I wouldn't fancy sleeping with my head in a slide out.
There have been many wild camping nights when it would have been inadvisable to deploy the slide out,
Many aires where impossible to deploy the slide out.
the “comfortable” double bed is only 4’4” wide, That’s less than a double.
If the bed is deployed, cannot use the kitchen - not sure.
Where do you put your morning in bed cuppa?
Almost no storage. At least in the RL, there is quite a bit of under bed storage accessible from the rear doors.

Sorry, don't know where I might have said (re front wheel drive) that but think we are quite happy with rear wheel drive and good tyres now.

All the Fiats are FWD, the IH are too, IH did do a merc but that was a 7 metre model.

Have you seen these guys:

Website seems dated so may not be around any longer
On the NEWS section of their website, the latest news is dated Nov 9th 2010 but small businesses don’t always have the skills to Update their websites once they have got one set up.
The only way to know is to see if they are open tomorrow but even if still going, likely to be very small scale and a wait for one to be built.
