Can one use standard toilet products, or do they have to be of a special nature? Also interested in eco options! Smelly thanks (=;

Forget additives and install a SOG system. No additives, empty in a standard toilet, no "niff"at all. We've had this system in our last 4 motorhomes and cannot recommend it enough.

Thetford also make a similar system.

A SOG system is best but some people don’t get on with them. If not, using bio liquid is a good green alternative. Some sites won’t allow the old style blue formaldehyde type.

As others have said, everyone has their own opinion, but we happily use Elsan Green organic. Absolutely no foul smells ever, but then we are from Devon!

I have also popped a pack of the Aldi bio sachets into the MH to substitute when the Elsan runs out.

The blue chemical is often not accepted in many campsites, as it kills all the friendly bacteria in a cesspit that are trying to digest the contents. It also (IMHO), has a retch-making stench after a day or two. Never again...

Although I feel lucky that we have a German van with a SOG vented at roof level, we found a 1ltr twin pack of Blue & pink Thetford Toilet Chemicals in the garage on collection, I guess the dealer was saying thank you for your purchase.
I have to admit being a Scot I am still using it as it was free, but I also purchase the Thetford Green one, for use where there are only septic tanks. I have tried using nothing, and despite the SOG unit, its when emptying I notice the increased honk from the cassette contents, having said that some Elsan points are pretty horrendous, especially when you lift the lid and others have not spent the time to rinse them with the hosepipe that is normally very local.
When I am Flush, I will use the Formil Bio liquid when Thetford stocks run out, as we use that at home in the laundry, maybe even add a touch of conditioner on the final flush, what do ya reckon? :giggle:
Banged to rights, for contributing to yet another toilet thread, when will I learn its a trap. and only going one way:doh:

So with the bio sachets, are you just adding one to the cassette every use? with how much water initially ?
And, what about the flush tank ? anything added at all ?
Thanks

I just put one bio tablet in when I have emptied. In my view it is a mistake to put additive into the flush tank as black bits grow in the system and they are a PITA to get rid of. We have recently settled on a system of using the pink flush additive in a spray bottle. It leaves a nice fragrance in the bowl, saves using the flush water -and therefore filling up the cassette - and means the cassette does not need emptying so often. Great if you are wild camping.

I totally agree, one little jelly baby after emptying. I do feel a bit smug when joining a queue after a particularly odious emptying in front of me, when there is an unspoken edging back by those waiting. Then when emptying mine there is a smell vaguely akin to flowers.

We add two Lidl dissolvable sachets of their bio cloths washing liquid, and just a small amount of water. Our motorhome, like most others, does not have a flush tank. The flush water is pumped up from our fresh water tank.

I think that may be the issue (no pun intended!). The blue kills off the enzymes that make the green work, so there’ll be a malodorous hum. I’m sure that if you rinse the cassette relay really well, then only use bio fluids or tabs, there’ll be a huge difference. That’s what we found, anyway.

Formil is great for handwashing clothes too, funnily enough - when we used to go to Europe a few months at a time without a washing machine, it makes it really worthwhile to go through the pain of handwashing when it makes you proud to hang it out to dry and it's so brilliantly white you need sunglasses to get it in when it's dry!

We use Aldi bio washing tab with no issues and as already said no chemical smell like with the blue plus added benefit it cleans the cassette out as well

One or two capsules in the cassette after it is emptied and after two or three days I'll add another if the weather is a bit warm. I also use a spray bottle of very dilute zoflora for the bowl and all around the shower area. A second spray bottle containing the same is used for cleaning the rest of the van interior hard surfaces - spray on a microfibre cloth which is washed after use. Saves on the single use wipes - and smells much nicer!

Yes Peter the pink in the main water tank would make your tea undrinkable 👍

#24. They use methanol in Drag racers so you should never be constipated
PS don’t drop a lighted match in the pan

I've also found that leaving the cassette a day or two when we get home means the contents are very liquid and much easier to deal with. Obviously that won't work when touring unless you have a second cassette. When touring I empty when there is a proper facility even if the cassette isn't full as one never knows where the next facility will be but on site where there are facilities it's done when needed and just before we leave the site.

Leave it a day or two?

Emptying the casette is the last thing I do when leaving the storage site for my next trip.

The Black Waste dump is on the correct side on leaving the site, the grey on the correct side on return.

I see nothing when I dump the black tank. Take out the cassette, swivel the pipe ound and remove cap, upend the tank into the small hole in the dump, wait, remove and use the adjacent hose to wash everything down. Add some water to the now empty tank, add a measure of fluid, reposition casette, wash down the area, wash hands and set off.

I do use 'Blue' fluids but will consider a change to green or Bio Washing Tabs after reading this thread.

I do like Zoflora and often use it in the grey tank but Id worry about mixing it with the bio bugs in the toilet.
We do use a diluted spray of the bio washing liquid to clean the bowl.
Are you happy that the Zoflora is not stopping the Bio working?

I think it is okay but not 100% certain of course! It's usually me that does the cassette duty and there is no overpowering stink when I empty it - often little or no smell at all - and the smell is more of clean laundry scent rather that what I remember chemical toilets smelling of in camping days. The shower room spray is very very dilute - a quarter or less of what it says on the bottle.

Because the cassette is emptied frequently I doubt the bio would have time to make a lot of difference when we are on site ..... but when touring it's left longer to mature and the spray tends to be on paper, wiped round and the paper not flushed but disposed of with the rest of the rubbish. We have had a couple of bags in the garage when we have not found anywhere to get dispose of our refuse.

They used to do 2.2ltr but our local Lidl ie only doing 1ltr Now

We use this £1.49 super concentrate by the capful per cassette - it last us for months.

Never used anything in ours apart the finest grade of poo & pee, our vans have always had SOG's.

Oh we do love a toilet thread.

The new Thetford Aqua kem Blue concentrate doesn't contain formaldehyde. We use the new concentrated Aqua Kem Green everywhere.
