Dishwasher tabs in loo of chemical treatment for toilet cassette.

Hi.
Have tried Dish washer tablets, have to say the cassette is very clean inside when i look after emptying it out. This has led me to dissolve a couple of tablets and put the liquid down the kitchen and tippy up sink bungs..... Last time i emptied the waste over the grid on site the water looked cleaner and flowed out more freely..
Will be trying the " Lidl Formil Bio. " thanks for that.
Tea Bag

If your thread title is a deliberate play on the word "loo" it's very clever, I like it. Otherwise the phrase is "in lieu". Either works!

I used to use bio tabs.

The cheaper the better and usually 2 tabs per time.

They do a great job of breaking down the solids.

However, I've now moved to a separating toilet (Trelino) and would never go back to a PortaPotti / Cassette toilet.

So much easier to manage, no need to have flush water, no chemicals or additives, no unpleasant emptying, don't need to find a toilet or specific dump point....

I did buy some coconut choir but am not convinced it makes a massive difference. Empty frequently is the key and all it costs you is a plastic bag. Much easier (and discreet) to find a bin than to lug half a toilet with you. Also much easier to clean / disinfect.

Have been using this for several years, works very well, all solids reduced to water.

Not dishwasher Tabs but Lidl sell a bio washing liquid Formil.

I use this in the cassette and it works well. It is;

Readily available, Lidl stores everywhere.
It works well, all solids and materials seen to end up as fluids when I dump the cassette, but I don't look to closely!
It smell nice, in the bottle, in the cassette and when the cassette is emptied.
Bottle size and shape stores well in the van recesses.
I buy the smaller bottle, for payload and storage, it only lasts about four refills, but there is a Lidl everywhere so restocking is easy.
Cost effetiveness, against propriety toilet fluids, I have no idea?

In addition, if you are caught short of clothing, you have washing liquid to hand.

There is a thread on the subject;

Lots of sites insist on environment-friendly liquid. Scotland is quite strict on this. Would this Formil qualify?

The trouble with Elsan and Thetford blue apart from the staining if even a drop is spilt is that they contain formaldehyde that kills any chemical treatment plants. Many CL's are not on mains drains meaning you cannot empty your cassette. That includes Jim Jasmin Camping.
We use Silvio as not only does it clean & smell nice but it’s not harmful to environment. Plus I can empty it into my daughters cess pit when staying and know it doesn’t upset the PH balance.

Except when you empty
the smell is "rank"
You are absolutely spot on there Neil. 🤮

I used to use the laundry tabs, but struggle to get them these days, and the gel pods require a drop of hot water to dissolve the pod itself. I now use the liquid form, and just like the tabs, it not only keeps the odours down when emptying, it dissolves the solids and keeps the cassette clean and calcium free.

I passed the sluice this morning whilst on my way to the toilet block. Matey was emptying his untreated black waste. Gordon £[<#×@% Bennett, what a gut wrenching stench. No wonder the chap waiting to use the sluice next was a good 20ft away. 🤮🤮🤮

Cheers,

Jock. ;)

Jock the pods will dissolve in cold water 👍 leave one in a mug of water to see 😉

Don't understand why more people don't use a SOG, no treatment necessary and never any odour.
Because they stink outside, well if the filter is not used, I try to check for SOGs on neighbouring vans before parking up.
not pleasant if it is facing your seating area, and the ones you can't see, vent on roof are just the right height to waft into an over garage bedroom window 🤮
think they are a great idea though.

But not quickly enough for me to close the cassette and swish the soapy mixture all around the inside Terry, including turning it upside down.
Been there and tried the pods pal, but wasn't impressed. ;)

No problem Jock 👍I would put the pod in the clean empty cassette then use it and empty once full after a couple of days (don’t use pods) but each to their own 😉
Never heard of people filling up cassette then adding blue stuff 😉

In what form is the chlorine?
Bleach is a chemical compound of chlorine
  • Bleach (household bleach) typically contains sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at a concentration of 5-8%.
  • Liquid chlorine (used for pools) also contains sodium hypochlorite but at a much higher concentration, usually 10-12%.

I know!
The point I was making was that “Liquid Chlorine” is not chlorine, which is a very unpleasant substance, gaseous at normal temperatures and pressures, becoming liquid under pressure. I believe it was used as a weapon in WW1.
Sodium hypochlorite is no more chlorine than table salt is.

Away with you ya silly bu@@er. I'm talking about when I've emptied and flushed the cassette through, then I add my laundry liquid and swish it about. .........

Mine isn't actually a commercial SOG, it's one I designed and made myself on the 3D printer. It's basically a charcoal filter and two computer fans.

My preferred solution (!) is When Nature Calls from Blue Diamond; quite pleasant smelling and bio degradable. I’ve been putting a couple of drops of Zoflora in the rinse water; but I suspect that’s not eco friendly, so hunting for a substitute.

Interested to hear that (and pleased) as we’ve just gone down that route and have yet to take it on a trip. Thanks.
