Disappointed in Michelin tyres

Still only two?

Our van is 4500kg, front max 2300kg rear 2500kg running at front 1930 kg, rear 4200 kg.
To start with I've got the front at 60 psi & rear at 70 psi.
I know only two but back tyre are like new hardly any wear at all. Thanks for the pressures that’s where I will start 👍

Really shouldn't put winter tyres on one axle and summer on the other. Not only different grip levels but different handling characteristics as well.

He’s not Lenny, he’s putting them both on the near side😂😂😂

Hey I am still here you know😁 in a perfect world you are right and grippy tyres on the back and not so grippy on the front would worry me a fair bit but the other way round on a front wheel drive I am willing to give it a go. coming from a haulage background front tyres where never the same as the rears and we managed ok . Bearing in mind the fastest I ever go is 60 mph and unlikely I will ever see snow I feel confident I will be ok .if I really like the toyo’s I may well invest in another pair .👍

Don’t get too excited about any longer life or reliability from Cross Climates. I’m about to kick off a complaint to Michelin over mine where two out of six tyres are showing cracking. The offside front and near side rear outer. Could be worse on full inspection as haven’t had wheels off yet to fully check. They have covered a paltry 6k, covers used to reduce UV, run at correct pressure monitored by tpms. Load index and tyre rating for van spot on and it‘s never run overweight. Tyres manufactured 11/18 and fitted in July 2018 so not even 3 years old yet. I’ll probably start a new thread so folk can see how I get on with complaint although not expecting much joy.

Thanks for that info Dave and Ginny ,I changed my mind at the last minute and went for Toyo tyres as recommended by another member . I do think Michelin tyres are not the quality they used to be and that’s a shame as a user of them for a very long time I don’t think I will be buying them again 🤷‍♂️.

Have you checked the required load rating? With DRW, those tyres could only take 5200kg with no flexibility for axle loading, whilst the Hymer Starline 680 seems to be rated for 5300kg. I guess these things change over time (or have different chassis options) and yours has a different gross weight?

Mines a 2004 Starline and comes in at 4.6 ton. The load index is within the specifications of the tyre, especially over the rear with four tyres taking the load.

I fitted Agilis cross-climates earlier this year to replace Vanco CPs and the transformation has been gob-stoppingly incredible. The ride is like a magic carpet, but with wonderful grip in the dry and the wet. The ride is also v v quiet. I always have winter tyres on the cars during the cold seasons, so it was excellent to bring the MH up to the same spec.

I’d certainly agree with the ride and particularly the grip. Mine took me around Madrid in a snow storm 2019 and got me off a muddy Cl this year. I’ve thought they were great tyres up until the crazing appeared.

you shouldn’t be disappointed with the Toyo tyres. I had them fitted on the rear axle of my previous van on Skye of all places when a pair of Avon’s decided to delaminate. I was very happy with the Toyo’s.

2 of my new tyres arrived Friday other 3 arriving today came from Germany.
Toyo Observe Van they are a winter tyre with 121 load rating. £107 each from Tyre Leader, getting a local mobile guy to fit them for £15 each.

Whatever happens re my Michelin complaint I‘ve lost confidence with the Cross Climates. I had Toya on previous van with no complaints and no cracking! I just might consider them once again.

Good afternoon,

I have 4 good tyres with plenty of tread on ( conti Vanco) but am changing because of 6 years old I think Iam going for the Hancook ra 18 8 ply m&s. its all part of the mid life revamp for the van.
Only thing I would say is that they are only a summer tyre.

Michelin agilis winter tyres on fiat

These were the tyres I had before I fitted the Cross Climates in July 2018. They were just over 6 years old but had no cracking or crazing and lots of tread left but replaced due to age.

I’m booked in as part of the complaints process to have my 30 month old Cross Climates looked at. I’m wondering what reasons they are likely to come up with to be able to blame me for some neglect or misuse on my part. Maybe running too close to their max weight or cold tyre pressure? In looking around at other brands though I can find nothing for the size of 195/70/r15 with a higher load index than 104.
They will perhaps suggest I may have run overweight? I know that’s not so but maybe a hard one to disprove.

As it is for them to prove I would have thought. I would use the problems others are having with their Cross Climates to your advantage.

We are running on Hankook tyres, fitted them when we went to 16" wheels last year.
Much more comfortable ride and better grip level in the wet. (y)
Suprised you had better comfort when going from the 15" to the 16". I always thought the lower profile tyres gave better handling with less roll at the expense of comfort. 16" usually fitted to take advantage of higher load ratings, not improved comfort. Perhaps you are suggesting the Hankook tyres themselves improved the comfort rather than the wheel size change.

I did go to 16" for the load rating on the rears as we were on the edge of the load limit for the 215's x 15" and at 80 psi on Continental Campers and the ride was terrible.
With nowhere to go with the width of the 15" steel rims, I made the move to 16" alloys with 225 wide tyres and now run at 67 psi in the rears and a much more comfortable ride.

If you can increase the tyre size to 205/70/15 you can get to 106. 215’s will get you to 109LI.

depends what margin for increase you have on wheel arches, suspension geometry etc.
