The gas hob works fine. The gas oven works fine. The grill lights, but goes out when you let go of the button, however long you leave it. What would cause this? Is it likely that only the grill burners need cleaning? I've no idea what other causes there might be.

Our grill burners sometimes fail to light and it's nearly always because I don't press the igniter IMMEDIATELY when I turn on the gas. My theory is the gas then blows away all the oxygen and the flame won't light. Cure is simply to waft or blow some fresh air inside the grill and it lights straightaway.

When you press the knob in and hold it your keeping the solenoid connected for gas to go to pilot or small flame on the burner if there’s no flame detected the solenoid opens no gas Flame goes out. First check if you have a pilot. This will be a small bracket near the main burner with a 6mm pipe and brass wire almost the same size the thermocoupl when you find this is there a good flame enveloping the thermocouple when you hold the knob in?.

unless things have changed since I retired some 10 years ago, it was illegal for myself to do any gas work on calor and natural gas. In properties or vehicles because I am not registered with Gas Safety. That is after being registered with Corgi for 30 years and gas safety registration for the next 10. When you say you can work on your own vehicle I
don’t think you are correct. I wasn’t condoning or promoting gas engineers I am by law not allowed to break a gas joint or remove the front of a boiler and should employ a gas engineer.
I must have had my brain removed when I decided to retire

Hi Lenny HB
after looking at current gas safety regs
nothing has changed you need to be a “ Competent person”
To be a competent person you have to have taken a registered course and have been assessed
Its a big grey area until something goes wrong
I never worked on gas until I was registered. also had public liability insurance
I’ve got manual u gauges electronic u gauges gas sniffers and I am still not allowed.
If something does go wrong try telling an insurance company.
I am only on my soap box because I don’t want somebody reading this and thinking I’ll have a go

Are you saying someone without qualifications is barred, for example, from adding another Gaslow cylinder?

I’m not a legal minded person ie I’ve worked all my life and mostly in the gas industry if you look up the gas safety regulations I think ( please note I’ve said think) you’ll find you a re legally allowed to connect and disconnect a gas cylinder and that is about all. If you want to work on gas equipment so be it nobody is going to be watching, that is your decision.
Look at from my position I’ve worked most of my life in the gas industr, registered for over 30 years myself and my busines. Now because I don’t have a piece of paper saying I’ve done a test every 5 years I’m not competent.
please note doctors don’t get tested every 5 years
it’s a money making stunt started by capita
In case your wondering I’ve not as much changed A tap washer since I retired
