I doubt that the weight of the mast exceeds that of an unsupported, half out awning. Consider using the awning keder groove and two or three tie-down fittings.
your suggestion may be effective but
Personally I would be extremely reluctant to drive around with a weight equivalent of a half out unsupported awning hanging on the keder groove

Seeing as you have a PVC you'll have lugs on the roof on the side opposite your awning so using those and some roof clamps you should be able to mount the mast on the roof assuming it's not too long.
Good idea, Mel…. 👍

I'd already been googling and there are loads of different mounting brackets for roof rails, racks, awnings etc so there'll be something suitable I'm sure, then it's just a case of securing the mast itself, maybe using sections of tube to slot it through to make it easier.

Depends on the awning: the Fiamma has the groove available with the awning fully closed; the Dometic and similar has the groove inside the cover and may not be suitable. No way would I travel with the awning unlocked never mind sticking out from the van.

Oooooh…. Forgot that insult!😉 The streaker holds that prize.
Nar Streaker is much more fun to sail than one of those old Solo tubs.
I went back to a Laser so I could improve my swimming. 😂

As its a PVC just fit a couple of roof bars and have mast on roof.
As others have said you can get tow bar mounted bike racks that still allow you to use hitch. We have one from Pendle Engineering. Not used for years as we can get bikes inside current van.
