Difference between a Hymer B624 and B644 2003

Carthago or even a Burstner or Detleffs but don’t know anything about them so thought it best to stick to a Hymer
Burstner & Dethleffs part of the Hymer group slightly lower standard than Hymer but Carthago are streaks ahead on build quality.

The dinette version has kitchen on the right but in L shaped form it will be on the opposite side (at least it is on our B644 with lounge.

Ours is a 2007 but looks pretty similar. The rear bed is smaller than the drop down but we were fine in it albeit a little tight and the person nearest the wall, invariably me, would have to make like an Olympic high jumper to get to the toilet in the middle of the night. As it’s generally just the two of us in the Hymer we often take a bed each....then it is masses of room. When we have the kids/grandkids we make do but it’s never been uncomfortable for us (I’m 5’11” and better half 5’4” and average build...although I like to think of my physique as Olympian)
Yes I think you have hit the nail on the head with your comment of “a little tight”....it just looks a little tight to be sleeping two for a long time without the backup of a drop down. I have seen two, a 644 and a 654 both with no drop down which is probably why they haven’t sold yet. I’m 5’10” and better half 5’4”. It’s not the length it’s the girth...mine admittedly not the better half ☹️. If I could get back to a size 32” waist it might be fine plus a bit of practise in my Olympian hurdling skills as I’m sure I would be the one against the back wall....how long does it take to lose 4 inches off the waist ?. Alternatively look for an E710 from those layouts with two singles at the rear....don’t know which would be the more difficult.

Yes but the asterisk one on the sheet shows the kitchen on the right side of the van whereas the one I’m looking at in the picture has the kitchen BEHIND the seating.

On another note, and I know it’s all just preference but do you find the rear bed on your 644 big enough for two. I can’t decide whether the rear fixed bed on a 644 is better or worse, smaller or bigger than the French bed on the 654. I think the 644 bed is meant to be 1.35m and the French bed I don’t know, plus the French bed has a bit of a cut away. I know I’m sounding very picky but a bed is important. I knew a couple who toured for 8 months of the year and just used the drop down in a 544. Hmmm.

Alex
Imo the French beds only really work on bigger mh's the cut off is annoying and when they have the bathroom alongside it makes it really narrow. Also where does the scooter go.

This is how we use the beds nb74r very similar layout to 644 but with another 500mm length

Why are you stuck on 7m Hymerbell ?

I think it’s the 7m plus and the 3m plus high combination that I find a bit too big I think. The Hymers are under 3m so that makes it feel less huge. Also go to quite a few campsites in France when in holiday mode rather than when we are on longer trips in aires and I think under 7m plus under 3m is more manageable because of trees ?. If we’re going to Spain or even Morroco and staying on aires and big open campsites I suppose it doesn’t matter.

Yes given up on the French bed version, bit too narrow and as you say where does the scooter go. I was contemplating putting a scooter rack on the rear but it got too complicated with axle weights, overhang etc so sticking with one with a garage that allows a scooter to go in.

Hi TheBig1

Don’t suppose you have layouts for 2006/2007 Hymers do you. Looking at B614. Can’t see the difference between that and a B644.

If they have the same layout as the 2004 brochure:

B614 has bigger bathroom and half dinette/L shaped seating.
B644 smaller bathroom and full dinette/L shaped seating.

Our B644 has low level traverse bed over a big boot.

4 inertia reel seat belts and two lap belts.

Centre dinette with additional drop down bed.

6 berths in total.

Would have preferred the garage version

This is from the 2007 brochure but I can’t get to the whole brochure as it’s in my MH which is in storage at mo. I do recall I found an electronic version online but can’t find it anywhere on my devices or online....

God it’s a nightmare...must be boring everyone silly. Yes as Wagoneer says the bathroom is bigger in the 614.....but does that mean the transverse bed is narrower....the space has to come from somewhere ?

Yes TeeMyob...I looked at a 644 with a boot/low garage but decided I wanted the big garage so I can take a scooter. Having said that I just discovered today that I would need a full motorbike license to go two up on a 125cc. Could ride it myself but then my better half would have to run along behind me which she doesn’t seem too happy with....or get a 50cc which I can ride two up but then probably not enough oomph.

They’ll be carting me off in a white van before I’m finished with this motorhome hunt !

There's plenty of a class under 3m high including artos. Imho your ok most places with 8m length and we re probably going for 8.5 when we change.

The bed width is the same for both the 614 & 644. The difference in space is achieved by the 614 only having a half dinette or in L shaped format, a shorter longitudinal seat swab.

The B664 CL (2007) has virtually the same layout as my 2009 Carthago Chic on a 4250kg chassis. Beware the exploding headlights on the new shape Hymers - expensive if they need replacing. One of the reasons I chose Carthago, even though the headlights are crappy :ROFLMAO:

If you are worried about it you can get clear covers for them although I haven’t bothered.

Hmm.... I’ll put that on my search list although don’t hold out much hope.

Thanks

Hi, right I’m still looking ? I found a B680 with a Mercedes engine. Don’t know which one that is. Says it’s 156HP so assume it’s the 2.7cdi sprinter but could be wrong. It’s a 2005. Thing is it is an automatic and I’m sure I read somewhere that the automatic stickshit gearbox is a nightmare. Perhaps the ordinary automatic gearbox is okay or should I stay away from Mercedes-Benz automatics altogether.

My dream Hymer of 2006 era was a B Star-line 660, based on 2.7CDI Mercedes sprinter. 7m long, transverse beds, 4600kg chassis with twin wheels on rear axle.

Not many built, so rare as hens teeth now. Reviewed by MMM April 2006.
Quoted myself...Doh....meant to quote Wagoneer

This review sheds light on the Mercedes engine/chassis options. Unfortunately, the test vehicle had a manual box. It's rear wheel drive which means you lose some storage space in the double floor:

I wonder where this one fits in. It’s a B654 with the kitchen behind the seats. Can’t see that in the layouts from TheBig1

On the earlier hymers, you could request a particular lounge arrangement.
I had a 654 with opposing sofas, but some had one sofa and a dinette.

Cheers Wagoneer ...a bit of bedtime reading

Are you sure its a double floor, not all the Mercedes based ones were as its difficult to route the driveline. I would recommend a thorough test drive with a Merc as some are quite bouncy.

As you say, the Merc doesn't seem to have a double floor like the Fiat based models. Just a large slide-out beanny box. The fresh water tank is mounted inboard whilst the grey water is underfloor with insulation and heating.

Bit late but hope this helps, it's clipped from the 2006 model year brochure.

Lovely model - hope you get the chance to enjoy it soon - I have plans for something similar post lockdown!

I was always a fan of the rear U-lounge; if you don't mind me asking, is yours a garage model and can the single rear beds double as a lounge? Also, does your L-dinette (so to speak) make up to a bed?

Questions, questions.....

Thank you.

Paul.

Our B525 has the same sized L dinette and it will make a single bed with the front passenger seat rotated and the arm rest (at the front of the L) removed. Only for temporary use really. I have a feeling our seat cushions may be a bit deeper than some so it's reasonably wide. We put the dog den on it.
