Devastating news

Just had a posting on Facebook by Dan:

Dear Friends,
It's exactly a year ago today since Esther and I set out on what would become our 80-day, 1000-mile hike across the Alps.
Just as we were leaving, Esther went back to collect something she'd 'forgotten'. The next morning, which happened to be my birthday, I woke up to find banners hung inside of our tent.
I won't be marking my birthday this year, that's not why I'm writing this. I just wanted to share this to reiterate how wonderful Esther is, always doing her utmost to make others feel special.
For the first month of our hike last summer, Esther also carried a heavier pack than me, because she was ultimately stronger and in better shape than me and she wanted me to enjoy myself as much as she was.
Comments I've seen and received directly in recent weeks that suggest Esther was in some way less capable in the mountains on her solo hikes (compared to our joint adventures) are fundamentally the opposite of what is true. It was Esther who looked after me in the mountains, not the other way around. Out of context over-analysis of one or two photos she shared, comments made by people who met her in passing, and inaccuracies in news articles shouldn't be considered more substantial than the facts known to those of us fortunate enough to be close to Esther. Or the countless safe and successful solo trips she completed in far more difficult terrain and weather conditions.
I expect some of you will have seen the article on the BBC website yesterday regarding the search for Esther. (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tyne-57818035)
I can only reiterate those same sentiments here. I sincerely wish that it was possible to fully convey all of the facts that make me doubt that Esther has suffered an accident in a concise manner that could be shared here. However, as I have experienced frequently in the past months, until people visit the area and see the trails/terrain, it just doesn't seem possible to provide a full understanding, no matter how much I write and share.
As police continue to try and get a better understanding of who else was in the area in the days following Esther's last contact, I will continue to search, ruling out even the most unfeasible of areas one at a time.
p.s. The image below shows an update of my walks so far as viewed from France.

Some very sad breaking news, if it proves to be Esther.

Very very sad, no words can do it justice. A young couple following their dreams. Just tragic. 🙁

Thank you for the update.

My heart goes out to all concerned, her family, the person who found the remains and the people who have to deal with the discovery.

A horrible time for all made worse by the uncertainly of if they have found Esther or not. Minds must be doing overtime with if, what if and how.

Just read the police are investigating some remains that have been found not far from where Ester went missing.

Just reading in Telegraph now. So sad.

Having said that it would be better to have an outcome and know than for Dan to spend years searching.

However I still would like to know she was alive and these weren’t her bones

Worse though , still not going to find out what happened to her , if it is her.
A pile of bones is not going to prove how she died, and will leave loads of things un answered.

In my gut, i feel not Esther. Just they way they say bones, rather than a body or human remains . Wouldn’t her body have been preserved a bit in the deep snow and also still be clothed and with a rucksack?

At least Dan and others can stop looking and hunting for her. Also she can be laid to rest.

Unless "bones" is a poor translation of the wording.

On one hand I hope it's not Esther and on the other it would give some closure and more once forensics have worked their magic.

I know we will all have our own theories but that is all they are and best kept to ourselves at the moment.

I see in the news that French police have requested dental records and her mother is supplying dna sample.
It sounds like they’re being thorough in determining the identity of the remains. This is a terrible situation but the result of these tests could bring some closure.

A very sad day for the family and friends of whoever has been found but holefully it wikl bring closure to someone when all investigations are completed.
So very sad..
