Dealer Apathy

Three times when buying in France I have got to the point of saying ok I will have it and the salesman has said: OH it’s lunch time can you come back at four o’clock? The first was a €70k Motorhome the second as an €85k Motorhome I went back to neither. The third was a €1.5k second hand scooter which we wanted so much that we went back but this time they reopened at 2pm. Moral, never get between a Frenchman and his lunch, it is worth more than €85k to him!

But if you remember when they reopened after initial lockdown one dealer had sold 40 mh's over the `phone internet 2 sight unseen during lockdown.
I have had plenty of that. Here I always dress like tramp when buying. With my wife ,the slightest sign of being ignored & she is gone.

They can take what they want.they might have to report you to cover themselves if they think you are dodgy/drug dealer/ have any thought that you might be iffy/ or any though that the money is . I used to do it on purpose .
Yes they could report you but only 5% of money laundering reports are investigated.

It’s not all down to dealers calling you back surely. They are dealing with customers.

If you want to do a deal then get your arse to the dealer and do the deal rather than talk about the deal you might be prepared to do.
That's fine Chris when the customers are 'falling' into dealers hands. What happens when the buyers don't just give themslves up! like now . . .
From an ex Sales Manager "Get dialing lad". If I said I would ring someone back I always did! Sadly the above comments have become the 'norm'

Absolutely no attempt to interest me in anything else.

That always amazes me when they do that. Or don't do that.
Had it recently in 2 different opticians. Fisrt was only interested in selling some high end Zeiss lens & offered nothing else? very odd.
and the salesman has said: OH it’s lunch time can you come back at four o’clock?
I've had that here twice , once at an opel dealer , just showed me the door ushered out saying come back at 5pm ,This is after I'd waited 20 minutes for him to finish something else.
Second was the VW dealer.

Main Land Rover dealer in Manchester would not take more than £9k in actual cash 2 years ago. I would class this dealer as a "High Value Dealer". They probable just ain't registered. A couple of other main dealers refused to take more than £xxxs cash over the recent years........about 10 years i guess.
There will always be dealers that will/can take cash?????
We are a Volvo Truck Dealer, selling trucks at huge price tickets
inthe Used truck department we dont take cheques, and certainly no cash to any value

Bought lot's of new stuff over the years, motor bikes, cars etc. Over the years by far the most popular method of payment has been bank transfer.

What happens to the ones shipped to Africa, are they paid for on arrival or before they go.

Shipped goods are usually paid CIF (Cost Insurance Freight)
It was only that there are lots of adverts for old trucks for export. The likes of supermarket trucks, they take off all the adblue etc so they will buy them. Not even they want the agro of technology.

There is a massive used truck buy and sell area in Dubai called Al-Aweer. Mostly bought from anywhere in Europe, stripped of anything technical that can be sold separately then re sold to Africa, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan etc. It's an impressive sight.

Actually, their diesel’s poor quality is the reason they need Euro3 trucks

In February we we're contemplating buying a Flourette from South Cave.
Rang them and talked, at length, about the model we wanted and the extras we needed.
After not hearing from them after 2 weeks I sent an email to check on progress. I'm still waiting for someone there to have the decency to ring me back. Overall we contacted 3 dealers and was so disgusted at there attitudes we gave up and decided to keep our van.

I’ve just seen this thread and it seems that nothing has changed in the past 5 years that we have owned our current van.
We too experienced the same issues.
I eventually narrowed it down to a private sale against a dealer sale in the Nottinghamshire area ( who does a lot of two page advertising in all of the magazines in a green logo.)
The dealer did everything to NOT try sell me a van.
I did end up buying from the dealer as it was the better van out of the two but dealt with the actual owner who had placed the van on a commission sale with that dealer.
I remember thinking that this was the next most expensive item after buying a house and just what a poor experience it was.
The after sales was equally poor and it was only a year later when the MD phoned me to remind me that my service, MOT & Hab Service was due that I reminded them of the list of things that they refused to rectify on the day after I had collected the van and that they wouldn’t be getting any future business from me.
The short sighted thing from their point of view is that I have spent what seems to be a small fortune on extras and upkeep and servicing since owning my van - all of which I would have been happy to place with the dealer had they looked after me in the first place.
I documented some of this on here at the time, so no, nothing has changed with the majority in this industry.
There seems to be a handful of dealers who are proactive and hungry to do good by you - these are also members on here by the way.

Thought the maximum for cash is £9999 not £10000 to escape the problems with money laundering but I'm sure there are folk out there who have got round that problem

As mentioned above, i've been in dealerships to buy new over the years. Some say they will only take £5k some £9k cash one said they would take £2k cash deposit only the balance to be transfer. So i don't know what the LEGAL limit might be but each dealership will have their own conditions.

True....we turned up with cash for a Range Rover a few years ago now, they were surprised but did accept it.

We have just put deposit on a new van, went to 3 dealers and talked to one on the phone, two dealers told me I didn’t need the options I wanted, I told them I have done many hours of research and I do want them . Asked them to send quotes 3 of them ignored what I asked for and when I called them , I was told they was busy with customers and would ring me back , I’m still waiting. I’m in business and would never treat any customer no matter how much they are spending, like I have been treated. Shocking customer service.

Strange that.......them knowing what you really want, and you not knowing.

When one TOLD me I didn’t want an auto changeover for my Gaslow system to be fitted on the van. I said I did, but he definitely knew better than I did........he repeated you don’t want one. I said I did.......then left.:censored:

When I was younger, I worked with a young engineering apprentice who had a Saturday job working for Swan National car hire. It seemed that then the policy was for each branch to source their own cars. One Saturday his boss took him to a large car dealership to buy all the new cars for the year. He suggested that the apprentice should conduct the negotiations, for the experience! He went in and eventually managed to attract the Manager's attention, but was basically brushed aside and passed to a young assistant. The young assistant was a bit overwhelmed when he was told that he was about to sell approximately 30+ cars in one go, and informed his Manager who was suddenly VERY interested, and tried to take over. However my friend's boss intervened and said no - he should have been more receptive at the beginning, and insisted
on only dealing with the young assistant. That must have been quite a commission that the Manager lost out on! 🙂

Not just dealers either. Having identified the class of motorhome we were interested in I furnished the dealer with a set of what I thought were quite pertinent questions about weight values and adding tow bars. Mostly, they were unable to answer these questions, so I sent the same questions off direct to the European manufacturer. It seems they didn't actually bother to read the content of the email, instead just assuming I was trying to buy a motorhome direct from them, [ which I wasn't] and nowhere within the email did I suggest such a notion. Replying with rectification of their incorrect assessment of my email has been met with a stony silence !! Clearly the phrase " other manufacturers are available " is not a common parlance on the continent.
Quite a disappointing outcome.
Regards.
Mike.

Had same issues trying to buy new cars. They thought i was a tramp so never bothered. Little did they know i had wheelbarrow loads of money.
Looks like he will get his van reading above. Picture please when he gets it.
Ha - I remember when hubby and I went to buy a new Jag and were wearing T-shirt’s and jeans and obviously looked like riff raff. Two sales guys ignored us looking round the cars and avoided my eye and they then sent out a young trainee, Hubby wanted an F type and got him to design it online with all the extras he wanted, asked the trainee a couple of questions which he went off to ask the other salesmen one of which rolled his eyes at the daydreamers.

The satisfaction when we said yes we will have it, how much of a discount for cash - suddenly everyone wanted to talk to us - we made a point of only dealing with the trainee and then the Manager who we made a point of how the trainee had done a good job selling the car to us - the two other guys looked gutted - book/cover!

I am quite upset that the trader Simon Howards Motorhomes who wanted to help at the beginning of this thread has been ignored all the way through while everybody slags off dealers. I probably will not need a new Motorhome for many years but will seek him out if I do. Many traders are exactly as described above but one that wants to take part and help like eddievanbitz And Simon Howards Motorhomes & Addie (Motorhome WiFi) I think Should be supported. if I am up your way Simon I will drop in for a coffee and you never know may buy something. (P.s. coffee could be in my van!)
