Determined that we should get out and about between incoming men’s-named storms, we have come to Filey and are parked up with about five other vans in the lovely Filey Brigg Country Park. Tariff is £23.50 per night with 16a ECU. It’s quite windy but not especially cold. Still, it’s nice to have the van’s heater on 2-3 and we are very comfortable.

There is something about the Yorkshire coast in winter. I far prefer this coastline in winter then summer when it’s crowded.

Just over an hour from York, we had a leisurely journey and after parking, walked the short walk past St Oswald’s church and across the bridge into the town centre. The town was dead when we arrived but quietened down as we walked back to the van after an excellent pensioner’s fish and chip lunch at CJ’s for £9.99 each. This consists of haddock and chips, peas or beans, bread and butter and a mug of tea. Can’t get nasty at that. And delicious it was too.

Happy Fishmas!

Should add that the excellent fish and chips were at CJ's Fish and Chips. Inghams, our usual haunt, was closed despite its website indicating the contrary! And Googlemaps.

First time I went to Filey, I was circa 3, 1945. We went to Butlins. I believe it had been closed for the duration and used for military purposes, either as a POW camp or for training. It was an open day. Butlins was in a sad state. The swimming pool floor was broken in half, and part filled as a boating lake. I was so excited when my 10 yr older sister and I were allowed to share a paddle boat to ourselves. It was my sister's interpretation of sharing that had me loudly protesting the whole time. I felt I was obviously man enough to at least control it some of the time. My sister and I spent a lot of time fighting.

Wonderful, evocative memories. Nice post. 👍

The Butlins, I believe was a little way down the road towards Bridlington at Cayton Bay. In another life, (1981/2) I used to deliver paint for Manders (remember them?) and had to deliver 200 gallons of white gloss to the old Butlins at Cayton Bay. I think there was talk of someone taking it over and doing it up. I recall just how dismal, especially the central fountain/boating pond/paddling pool looked, all faded blue paint peeling and bottom cracked with weeds growing out of it. A ghost of times past. 🥲

POST SCRIPT: I was mistaken. You Dorwyn are correct in your recollection. There was Butlins at Filey. The holiday park at Cayton Bay was Wallis’.

Nice one love Filey and that coast, the other chippy in Filey, Inghams, are lovely, one of the best
Inghams is great - one of our favourites - when it is open! Its website said it was open. Google maps said it was open. The sign on the door said it was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. It annoys me when you carefully do your research for a trip only to have been given false information - I even rang the provided number to check opening times. No reply. CJ's is close by and very friendly. We even had a chat with CJ himself who was very happy to be picking up trade from his mate Ingham!

Filey is one of our go to for days out or short stays. Lunch on the front from one the kiosks and then we stay at the Piebald pub at Hemingway. They are known for the choice of 52 types of pie hence the name.

Thanks for the reminder, must check dates for Filey folk festival, held round the pubs and at the bandstand.
Was disappointed in thefish and chips at both those establishments this year.

If you walk south along the beach you'll see what was Billy Butlins house a large white art deco building, behind it is Primrose Valley which was Butlins camp. If you walk a bit further you reach Humanby gap, there's a cafe stop over looking the coast, decent cakes, if open.

TBH I had assumed Butlins type camp was still there. These days I'm not far from Butlins Minehead which still is. Aside from the fact that the "trauma" of the event is seared into my memory, I'm now thinking I'd like to take another trip up there. I've still got a few rellies up there, Withernsea, Bridlington, Scarborough etc. The whole area is full of childhood memories...

It’s worth clicking on the Filey link at the bottom of my post #12 if you want lots of reminiscences on Butlins at Filey. Hope that you do head back there.

I’m thinking of doing the same regarding my childhood holidays in South Africa. 👍

We always stay at Muston Grange (not open Nov - Feb). Nice walk into town past the golf course.
Great little site.

Portion of fish and chips that size and the trimmings would be over £20 in my neck of the woods.
Shudder to think of paying that much.S
Fish and chips in the North East bout £16, for 2!!!
Back in June, we got pensioners price in Sheringham for £14 for the 2 of us, very much the same as in the OP's photo.

I had a 6 year older sister and 7 year older brother.

I can relate

I’m pretty sure Butlins at Primrose Valley is now mostly a housing village. I too have blurred memories or been taught to swim there, big dipper, bumping cars.

We visit once a month to walk along the beach with the dog.
