I was thinking of getting a dash camera. Partly as evidence in the event of an insurance claim but mainly because we drive some scenic routes l, particularly in Europe, and we thought it might be nice to record them.

When I had a quick look there seems to be a plethora of them with a range of prices. Does anyone know much about them, or have experience of using them.

I know the law varies in different countries.

Just swopped our Nextbase for an Aguri as, after getting two speeding tickets from cameras I didn't even see in France and Spain, this gives a warning on known cameras and radars. NOT a detector but uses the same database as Nextbase.
Cool if it works for you. I didn't know Nextbase had a speed camera database, but since you say it does I'm puzzled as to why they're not indicated..

Ah, yes Nextbase doesn't have the data base, it is the Garmin sat nav base that is used. Just an old chap getting confused! DOH!

That's a good collection! I have the nextbase dashcam tucked behind the rearview mirror but my favourit 'toy' is the high level rearview camera that functions as alternative to the mirror (& does so better than the mirror in my wife's car) but has a button I can press to give a vertical downward view for close quarters reversing. I expect many people here have them but after a year's ownership it's still a novelty & a daily delight to me.
My next wish though is for a camera on the front of the bonnet, or maybe one on each front corner so I can have an equally good view when getting up close & personal with obstacles at the front. Has anyone got that & if so please send details!!!
We have just had the Motorhome Retrofits HD 360 camera system fitted to our HYMER.

If you look at their YouTube channel you will see our install under ‘Humongous HYMER’😀 We also has parking sensors and an upgrade to the standard stereo equipment.

Not cheap but in our opinion totally worth the outlay, time and effort going to & from Poole.

Lovely vehicle and they do seem to do a well thought out and executed job

Thanks👍🏻 as I said we are really happy with the quality of the workmanship.

As you can probably imagine we cringed a little when we saw how they did what they did but the end result looks like all the newly fitted items have always been there and integrate perfectly with our vehicle 😀

Nextbase are not cheap but probably the best on the market, you can pick it up accessories for them no problem, had cheap ones in the past, but as they say, you pay for what you get.

I use these wireless rechargeable cams front and rear. The standard high level fitted by Elddis is fine for seeing behind like a mirror but rubbish for parking hence why I fitted the two wireless cams. The camera lens is adjustable up / down to suit your needs.

The internal monitor is 12v powered but the cameras have internal batteries that you can recharge by usb (I just use a portable charger like you would for your phone). Batteries last months when charged and just press a button on the monitor to switch to front or rear view. The 12v cigarette lighter power supply for the monitor has a button to turn the system on when you need to use it and has a USB port for charging your phone too.

The parking lines look odd in the photos as we are on site and the van is on levelling ramps at the moment.

I got mine on Amazon and it comes with monitor and one camera so I bought an additional camera for the front as two cams can be paired with one monitor. They Just attach behind your number plate.

Good reviews on YouTube and very cheap. I just want a very basic set up and will only be downloading footage for insurance purposes so no wifi not an issue. Tempted

Looks excellent, thank you!!!
My concern is how the camera units are easily enough removed for recharging but not vulnerable to theft. How does that work out?

Also not cheap for two, I think I need one for each front corner but will investigate. Cheers.

That looks like a perfect example of what I said earlier about anything being better than nothing. I'd be tempted for use as a rearview cam, which I currently don't have, except they're out of stock!!
Maybe they'll be back...

They are quite wide angle and I find one on the front centre ok. The one at the back views my towbar so I can see the absolute rear most point when parking in a tight spot. You don’t need two full kits, just one kit including single camera and monitor then an additional camera on its own. Both will pair to one monitor.

To steal them you would have to rip them off potentially damaging them or remove the number plate and then try to remove the very strong adhesive tapes (same as use on number plates) that hold the camera bracket to the back of the number plate. Cameras would be of no use without the monitor they are paired to so thieves would also have to break in the van as well, so theft is unlikely in my view. Mine have been on 9 months now and no attempt at theft so far.

i don’t remove them to charge up, I just remove the end cap off the camera and plug in a portable usb charger and that works fine and charges quick. You can remove the camera to charge in the house using a very small Allen key if you require to do so but the small screw is not obvious unless you know where to look so your average thief wouldn’t notice it I guess.

i charged both cameras last September before fitting them and despite a very cold winter and a good amount of use they were both still at around 60% charge at the end of April. I have just been to North Devon for a week so charged them before I went and now I’m back they still show 100% charge.

I hope the above is of some use.

Maybe just get the kit with one camera and the monitor and see how it goes, you can always add a second camera later. Happy that the detail was useful for you and no trouble for me to provide it. Do post your thoughts on here if you do decide to give it a try.

Just another thought that I may have mentioned elsewhere on the forum. To get the parking lines set up properly, I just drove to my local supermarket car park when it was quiet and reverse parked in a bay and then did a bit of manoeuvring of the van and adjusting of the cameras until the red parking line was level with the bay marking line at the rear of the vehicle, then I drove in forward and did the same with the front camera. Took about 10 mins in all to get everything lined up and since then I’ve come to rely on the system in tight spots.

That was the plan, I already have a rearview/reversing camera so was just thinking for the front - for which use I'm not sure the angle of view is as wide as I'd want. I'll do some measuring...
Thank you!!

Just read through all the posts on here and fair to say the vast majority are in favour of dashcams, however there are times it can work against you!
I had one fitted to my car when I was the victim of a scam "accident" usual story, I was forced into the situation of hitting the car in front at less than 5mph, slower than they were hoping for, even the seat belt tensioners had not operated and the dashcam recorded the speed, I really thought that by submitting the footage I would be in the clear, the dashcam showed absolutely no damage to the car I hit (tapped more like) supported by my own phone pics, the insurance company paid out for damage so severe that the claimant had to hire a car, he also claimed he had to go to hospital with whiplash injuries for which they paid unknown compensation, when I queried all of this, they said that my dashcam footage did show his head move back, of course it did! that's what his claim was for, also they agreed (off the record) that this was likely a scam claim and things were being put into place to stop these, great! but it did not help the loss of my ncb. so angry I have never used a dashcam since.
