Strolling through the village over the weekend I was passed by a brand new Hymer, raised ride height, knobbly tyres. And painted black. It's a factory option, not a wrap. It looked sinister to put it mildly. Given its supposed off road credentials, what kind of hell-scape is it trying to blend in with? Is it subconsciously a reflection of the times we live in? I've noticed you can spec black upholstery on new MH's now too. What's going on, funsters? Don't we want a little light in our lives?

That would be my chief concern. It's bound to have an stress-ageing effect on the vehicle. It'll also punish the chassis too. And I'm sure your insurance will want to know too.

Have you seen all the knobs and switches on the steering wheel. It's got more than Lewis Hamilton's car. The only plus point I can see is the marginal improvement in 'wet field' traction and a bit more room on the wheel arches to get my tyre covers on when i get home.

Fashion can be an expensive business (so I'm told 😁).

Hymers Off Roading film below
.
OK, so they are not a Landrover, but they would gave any other 'rough roader' a run for the money.
(And with decent tyres you will be towing others off the field of wet grass.)

The one on the left couldn'0t get down that slope without the back grounding. The back needs hacking off at 45º after rear wheels for decent clearance

Its not too much of a risk taking a van type "off road" but any coachbuilt is asking for body damage and resultant leaks due to torsional stress caused by chassis twist .

I have no idea how many places there are that you can realistically take a vehicle like this off road, but personally I kinda like seeing the countryside without it being littered by offroad vehicles. Keep 'em on the road, I say.

Years ago we saw Valentino Rossi's RV coming out of Dover as we were both passing the 'abandoned tunnelling machine' in opposite directions, since we were on the way to get a ferry. Shiny back and stunningly gorgeous. Always loathed the matt charcoal Blackbirds too - thought they'd look so much better with a topcoat instead of selling them in primer .........
