Damp issue on rear floor during annual habitation check

So now , get yourself a damp meter and keep an eye on it!
Best to look for one that has the sharpest spikes as they make tidier holes in the wallboard. I think there are some that are non contact but rather expensive.
Above all enjoy it!
Mike & Ann

I bought an Extech M057 pinless non-invasive damp meter after reading up on various makes and models as it gets good reviews and was a sensible price.

Not until Jac gets her knee sorted out - any ‘van we bought now would be sitting on the drive for a few months not being used, so I’ll wait for the ‘price-correction‘ to occur later in the year……… 🤞 🤞 ;)
Not much chance of that that, prices are still rising, with a lot of vans on a 2 year delivery time frame prices will only go up even more over the next few years.

And here is my ex-pride and joy for sale on the dealer’s website! (y)
Hi all

I can see the trail here is a little cold but I too have just joined the elddis damp issue team

We have a 194 motorhome. 2020.

really nice unit to be fair and had it 1 year. Just had 3rd hab check. Nothing to report last year.

Last week, readings of 30 in rear corner. 30 in front of shower but we have never used it.

The main door has started to twist and doesn't close properly in top corner. No accidents or forced entry I add.

Asked hab guy if he sees this much, the reply was friendly as to not worry me, but as an engineer I was used to sorting warranty issues out. Hab guy said loads of the Solid construction are giving problems. He said good luck as heard Elddis are not that welcoming to warranty issues.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt I mailed Elddis giving all details and asked what to do.

I was given a list of 4 APPROVED repairers to call. All 4 wanted nothing to do with it as I had not purchased it from them. IBought it used at 12 months old. I asked the last one, a huge player in the market and was told not a day goes by without a call like mine over damp on Solid construction units. So many they have to turn the work away. Their manager had to go to Elddis over whether he wanted to sell them anymore.

I have a funny feeling now I may have fallen for the slick video about Solid etc.

I Called Elddis today and spoke to a nice young lady (not her fault) who informed me it was my responsibility to travel whatever mileage may be to get the work done, I said nobody wants to take it on and was told it's because of backlog, COVID, parts, and suppliers have to prioritise the customers who bought from them first.

So if you buy a used Elddis as we have, you get pushed away as there is a backlog and you didn't buy from the dealer they advise to repair it.

As an engineer I could repair it myself, strange really I buy a SOLID construction and get told I cannot do any repairs so I have to leave it to get wetter for however long it will take to get some results.

Solid by the way means Strong. Light DRY !!

Now to be fair problems do occur but a few hours on sites as this have shown to me this is not a isolated incident and the calls I made today show they have a real problem here.?

I asked for a contact at Elddis to speak to a manager and was refused one. I have to put everything through the customer services, managers will not take calls, no escalation proceeded.!!

I will follow up on this as I get more Approved repairers to call. Who will say no to me?

I will also speak with trading standards.

Beware all, in this crazy time of rapidly escalating motorhome madness, costs have spiralled and made cheaper units seem bargains, or are they?.

beertad.

I'd be taking the MH to the Elddis factory direct, and if refused constructive dialogue, with a promised resolve, I'd be blocking their gateway and immobilising the vehicle, making sure that the local press and radio were informed. Get it up there on YouTube as well. The unwanted attention may spur management along. ;)

I know someone who set up his own website, with an extremely close name to that of the company who built his MH. There were so many problems with his new Sw##t, that he shamed them into supplying a brand new exchange, and an undisclosed sum in compensation, but he had to take agree to down his website as part of the deal.
He then went on to represent them on their stand at major shows, such as the NEC, and got paid in one way or another.

Good luck. (y)

Jock. :)

Unfortunately they have quite a reputation for it. The SOLID construction sill uses untreated softwood just sales BS.
Our Elddis Autoquest 140 had damp reading in the early 40's on the nearside wall close to the top, which stretched the way along from front to rear
Circa £1,800 to fix....luckily, it was traded in and they took on the remedial work

We have a 7.3m Autosleeper Cotswold which I'm really happy with but my wife is keen on a shorter van. She likes the Elddis Sunseeker on a Peugeot base. Reading this post has put me right off the idea as it will probably be SOLID construction.

Barstewards.

If ever I change the van I think I'll be sticking with a pvc
How do manufactures/dealers get away with it
Much the same as new build houses huge price tags and poor quality
My heart goes out to all those struggling to get positive results

One with spikes is the last thing you want to use on a Motorhome. The non evassive/paddle ones won't do any damage and they measure to a greater depth.
Had my annual damp check done yesterday & asked the tech what type of meter he used. They use the spiked ones sparingly, he said the non intrusive can give false readings.
BTW, my 2 year old Burstner has damp in the gas locker, they are asking Burstner to authorise a new door & frame. I reckon a new seal would sort it.

Not an engineer I'd want to use then.

Just taken the ‘van to Marquis in Tewksbury for the annual habitation check (£234 thank you!), and it has highlighted damp along the rear floor at bumper-level. As the ‘van was registered in May 2019, they (Marquis) are contacting Elddis to confirm a warranty repair - Elddis should respond before Christmas, and the repair will be carried-out early next year………I hope! I’ll be interested as to where the water ingress is from - we don’t use the shower or wash basin, and the toilet is the usual Thetford type so is, in effect, a sealed unit.
The results for the damp check are below:-

Thats rotten for you (no pun intended) but you seem to be getting good service from your dealer and Elddis which is refreshing to hear. I was just curious that you don't use the shower or the wash basin, does that mean you can only stay on sites with facilities?

Yes - that was the case, but not any more as we no longer have a ‘van…….

We have a 20 year old van and Hab check has passed, only one place to keep an eye on but only 18 to 20%. Lots of newer vans having damp issues. I guess cheaper materials to keep manufacturing costs down at he detriment of the vans longevity.
