As a garage owner, reading this post for the fun of it and noting the comments made, the service light on some vehicles also comes on to tell you that the vehicle has an electrically recognized problem, and the engine requires the attention of a garage or some who knows what they are doing, the reason for the loss of power is to stop the driver from causing significant further damage to the engine, hence it seems like driving as all the brakes are jammed on, this can be caused by emissions as well as by according to auto data up to 35000 different reasons, yes its not a typo thousands was meant, some of them are insignificant, but cause the problem. Like 99 percent of drivers when it happens all they want is it to work and be drivable yet again, unfortunately unless the problem is resolved properly it will come back and haunt you big time, and I see it on a daily basis, yes you have spent considerable money on your motor home and now are being reluctant to do anything about an issue on it, my advice is to spend a little money to rectify it now as opposed to a considerable amount later for the peace of mind, but as the saying goes "you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink" this applies to a lot of motor home owners as well as car owners (I have both) if its ill and telling you like it is, go to a garage same as you would for your self and see a doctor. I have met with more than my share of bodgers and other motor home owners who have disregarded very good advice they have been given and suffered the very costly repair of their vehicles for disregarding very sound advice given freely and at no cost. Here endith the lesson, not every one is a rip off merchant.

The problem, as always, is finding one that isn't. The motor trade doesn't have the best of reputations for very good reason. Manufacturers add to the problem by charging extortionate amounts for cheap to manufacture parts. If OEMs and repair shops expect customers to take your advice they need to get their house in order first.

What would be good would be easy access to our data in the ECU. Manufacturers think it is only for their use.

I totally agree with you finding one is difficult, word of mouth goes a long way, yes my place has many satisfied customers who have been coming here a long time, I never advertise and in this day and age I have many accolades on the net giving recommendations in using my services, all the parts are manufacturers original parts although supplied on the after market to us named brands only used, and supplied for use. because of the brands and parts used, I am able to demand from my suppliers the added bonus of a life time warranty on parts that they supply me with at no extra cost, Ideal for motor home owners as they are well known for keeping them for a considerable time obviously some service parts such as pads and discs are not covered by that, as they are wear and tear items, but vehicle owners are advised at the time what is and isn't, my business does a considerable amount of work won from main (stealers) dealers, which is fully warranted with a no quibble claim, customers old parts are kept and showed to them on collection of the vehicle at the end of the day, so they now what their money has been used for, not saying that I dont have unhappy customers yes I do have a few, typical yesterday a customers car failed his MOT (I do not do MOT's) on emission's, the oil & filter hasn't been changed to my knowledge in 6 years and the air filter which was very badly blocked and had a screwdriver pierced through it so that the engine would run, was the problem, these parts are serviceable items and need replacing every year on modern day vehicles, need I say more, some people expect miracles.

That information is readily and easily available, yes you can by a code reader, but you only get what you paid for, dont expect a code reader bought for £80's will give you what mine would give you, my scan tools cost in excess of 4 grand, and can prove expensive if you do not know how to use it, as people have found out, to cover all my employees I have 4 machines to cover the complete range of vehicles on the road today, as you can see it is an expensive outlay which requires 6 monthly upgrades at a further cost complete with leads, which can cost the price of a cheap code reader.

I suspect that if you're willing to expose yourself to Motorhome Fun you have no need to explain that you're one of the good guys. :D

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your kind words, Just to say I am not trawling for fresh work as my staff are kept very busy for 6 days week as it is with varied work. But I like to pride myself on treating customers the same as I would expect to be treated if I have to visit a place or garage whilst on my travels, and there are some right dogs out there, some of the best places are proper small ltd companies, not the fly by night type of place.

The van started and we have done a 2 hour run on the flat and no lights no limping no issues as if it had never occurred.
I appreciate your comments but at the moment the 80 nicker route is my likely choice.
We worked out the van has only done 700 miles since a full service and it reset itself so as it happened at the end of days drive we are thinking something got a bit hot.
We will monitor and buy a gadget.
Not the correct option but the most economical (imho).
If it goes again then I should have a clue.

Checked all the fluids and if you stretched your imagination a little the engine coolant was a bit low so topped that up.

Thanks again but I am one of those horses !

I appreciate your comments, and know what you mean, the transits suffer badly from the 5th injector (the one used in the DPF) and to date this year I have replaced 3 in this establishment this year, when they go they go and there is no resurrection possible for them, the first sign is the service light coming on and staying on, it operates automatically to clean the DPF and then there is nothing to indicate that it is functioning in a re gen cycle it is known to come on if the re gen cycle is interrupted by the vehicle being switched off, could be classed as a common fault although fords will not admit it, low coolant level would operate a warning light on the dash board but wouldn't cause a loss of power, I had taken it as read that all levels were correct at the time of the loss of power all though low levels would not give the loss of power all though there would possibly be warning lights on the dashboard warning of low levels of fluids. As you can appreciate I am not selling anything but it is advice given freely to say there may be something going on in your vehicle that you are not aware of, hopefully it has cleared itself and will stay clear in the future.

Take a look on YouTube for a reset sequence.
You might be able to reset it.
Ours on a Peugeot is foot on brake, turn ignition on then keep finger pressed on the menu button for 5 seconds then it resets or along those lines.
Menu button,,what is this modern tomfoolery. BUSBY.:LOL:

In my case I Knew what the issue was. I had Broken the connection deliberately, in order to remove a seat, in order to (eventually) reseat a malfunctioning Relay!.. The potential (Mercedes) bill was in excess of the cost of a device which reset the SRS, had there been an issue the SRS would have recurred. In that alone I am happy, and (now) in pocket by £200+.(y). I have spent the best part of to-day, replacing rear brake shoes on a 54 plate Punto!. In the rain:cry:. Tomorrow Is (mouthwatering) Fish and Chips plus a couple of Pints of Real Ale day(y) after doing the main weekly shop! (my reward:)).

You need a code reader, cheap ones around to help but dearer ones give more information. You probably have a SENSOR gone wrong. My Smart drove me around the bens going on Safe Mode. It turned out to be the lateral sensor of the ESP system going wrong cutting the power to recover from and imaginary skidding situation. took thrtee month before I got that one and specialist did not know even after two MBenz computor checks. I fixed it by doing three left-hand doughnuts in an empty car park area.
I bought a proper (dear) pro code-reader for all my vehicles and a MB special for the Smart and the Sprinter.

I used one today , my daughters Corsa had orange engine light on , used a £10 reader from eBay , fault showed as egr valve , cleared the light , I will clean valve at weekend, I know it won’t reset everything but best £10 I ever spent

Just as well as you probably do not have ESP on your MH unlike the shorty Smart, Anyway Doughnuts are very bad unless with lard and no sugar.
The readers I bought were in the multiple hundreds and do lots of the manufacturer only codes that the cheapy ones do not register... Most manufacturers do this to keep the main agents in business at £100 Plus an hour. No manuals no info no sod all to help an owner.
