We're setting off soon for a 3 1/2 weeker heading to Solvenia, (via the Rotterdam ferry); probably with a detour into N Croatia to see the sea. When we've been in the direction of Spain before we've succeeded in returning home with a goodly amount of basic red wine... (I know the new limits... , and we've got the spare payload).

So I'm seeking advice so if there are any places down there where it's worth topping up the wine cellar at home from, (aka coal 'ole)?
Or should we just join a UK wine buying club?

I'm not going to pretend to know much about wine at all, but the area where we live in Slovenia is known for its wine cellars called repnice. Many of them are open to the public and offer wine tastings. Our nearest one is Repnica Najger, and Aljoška does a very interesting tour. They have room for motorhome parking or you are welcome to park up at our place.

Thank you, for both great suggestions and a generous offer. We're still trying to establish potential destinations, so this might fit and add to the trip nicely.

Many years ago I toured Croatia on my motorcycle with a tent and my girlfriend on board. We visited the Peljesac peninsula and drunk wine from the local wine shop. It was so good I smuggled 12 bottles back to Scotland hidden in my fairing. All went well until the speed bumps at Folkestone and I sounded like a milk float going through customs 😐🤪😎

Try it if you like it it's good wine that's the only criteria. When we do a wine tasting and people like the cheap stuff better it doesn't mean they have inferior taste just that they're lucky they can buy more for the same price!

We bought a load of wine in Croatia on our 3 month tour of Europe, but we'd drank it all by the time we were ready to leave Italy - so came home with a load of Italian red instead 😂

I used to have a house in Croatia. There’s some lovely wines. At one time I think Croatia had quite a thriving wine industry but the vines were wiped out on some islands by disease.

One name that sticks in my memory I think is Babic

Lots of good wine in Slovenia and Croatia ... buy a bottle and taste it, then buy more, or taste it in a vineyard shop. Not sure what their duty/vat is but it will be cheaper than here!
Don't forget the allowance, they will check on your return and if you are over the limit you have to pay duty on all of it, not just the excess.

Who will check and where ? Returning on Le Shuttle multiple times I've never been asked or checked.
Never had much either though, just the odd bottle maybe that dodged the cork screw

Taste it. Like it. Buy it. My grandad rules. He worked in the wine trade for 45 years and it was his mantra.
Good advice and my mantra regarding wine
Can't do with wine snobs, I have a mate who insists spending less than £15 on a bottle is a crime.
I once got him drinking a Lidl £5 bottle and said he liked it, but wouldn't believe it was from Lidl

We've bought Slovenian & Croatian wine & from Montenegro & Albania. I like the way their vines are grown more naturally with the weeds/grass left on the ground. It's more natural & not sprayed off like in my countries.

Their wines are very good, but don't expect a cheap bottle! A couple of years ago & it was £10 - £15 for a nice bottle direct from a vineyard & makes France, Germany look cheap.

Vineyard care on weeds etc varies a lot from vineyard to vineyard in most countries we had a walk amongst the vines in Alsace there's a marked difference in cultivation on the same hillside
