Well we travel to Spain every year with no issues but this time feel like complete novices! Plan was to go to Ireland with dogs with EU passports. Nearly caught out because going to the Irish Republic, the dogs NEED a tapeworm tablet within the 24hour-5 day time frame recorded in their EU passport. Fortunately found accommodating vet and completed at 9am today. Now all set to go to Ireland and then ferry booked to Spain To attend wedding in Porto. However we are driving home through France and we haven’t got a ’Crit Air’ sticker and now too late to apply for one!!! (Doh)
My question is how challenging is it to drive from Spain through France without one??? Looking at a Crit Air map the zones appear to have expanded and we don’t want to incur a fine.
Any advice would be appreciated-currently feeling this trip is a bit doomed!!!

I wouldn’t think it’s a problem at all just steer clear of towns and cities you may find it’s easier using toll roads?

You will be fine as said keep out of the big cities. Although i have had a crit air sticker since they were introduced i tour France ( now for 2 months) every year covering on average 3000 km and have never encountered a zone.
Heres a link to the map for existing zones and the proposed zones .

Other than Rouen there are none you need to be concerned with and this info on another thread
"Sir,
You wanted to know if there was an exemption for motorhomes to drive in the ZFE-m of the Rouen Normandy Metropolis.
We confirm that motorhomes are authorized to circulate in the ZFE-m by way of derogation, until June 30, 2024.

As of July 2023, ZCRs that might affect drivers arriving from the UK are currently implemented in the following locations in France:

  • Aix-Marseille-Provence region
  • Bordeaux (coming in 2024)
  • Clermont-Ferrand
  • Grenoble
  • Lyon
  • Marseille
  • Montpellier
  • Paris
  • Reims
  • Rouen
  • Strasbourg
  • Toulouse

Not a problem. Unlike the Uk they only apply on days when the air quality is poor , & when you then need a sticker.
You can order it online and once done that is enough proof if stopped, if you’re coming up the West of France all you need to avoid is Rouen.
I drove through in both directions,& using the north side of the river, with no sticker.
I now have a sticker but if the air quality was bad it would not allow me to enter if I even knew where to look?

I have a slightly different problem, in that my online application continually fails to accept my photos, even though they (2) are below 2Mb in total, and are the correct format and in B&W. The other problem is that it keeps asking for 'retrofit device' proof, presumably to do with AdBlu, (my 2021 Fiat Ducato PVC is Euro 6 standard, as I already have a German [green] Umwelt plakette) but it doesn't allow upload of more than 2 photos, and - moreover - how do I 'prove' that my 2021 van came with Euro 6 compliance as standard?

My question is whether it is possible to buy a Crit Air once in France? I thought I read somewhere recently that it IS possible, but in limited outlets, but I can't find the article that I'm sure I read?

Surely you don't want to get to the stage where you have poor air quality?
This is a tractor rotavating. what we have to breath in daily for the last few weeks. You need goggles & a mask.

I would much prefer petrol & diesel fumes

Meanwhile, away from the bitchfest (get a room, Oh Please!!) …. has anybody managed to buy a Crit Air whilst actually in France, as opposed to ordering online??
I ordered one today online and didn´t see any option for buying in-country, maybe it´s different if you are French registered (vehicle not person ).

Only available by post
Not disputing your answer, but a quick Google search suggests that it is possible to buy a CA sticker in car dealerships and some supermarkets amongst others in France. I would be very interested to hear from someone who has actually managed to achieve this

I managed to get mine very easily. I'm Euro6 and had to give it two goes on the V5 image size. PDF invoice came over email which, as has been said, can be used as evidence if the sticker does not turn up. But unless you need to enter a city on the list it's not really a problem.

RAC has the following to say:

How do I get a Crit’Air sticker?

You should apply online for a Crit’Air vignette on the official French government website.
In order to apply, research your car's European Emissions Standard using our helpful table but if you’re still unsure contact your vehicle manufacturer.
You’ll also need to upload an image or scan of your vehicle's V5C registration form. This must be uploaded in JPEG, PNG or PDF format and the file size must be under 400KB.
Be aware: The ordering process of a vignette can take up to six weeks so make sure you factor this in before you travel and plan accordingly ahead of time.

Can I buy a Crit'Air emissions sticker in France?

If you're driving from the UK in a UK-registered vehicle, the answer is no. You must order your sticker direct from the official French government website and ensure it's displayed before you leave for France.

Not a problem just steer clear of CritAir towns which are signposted and there is a list of current towns on Google. Sone GPSs can be programmed to avoid CritAir restricted towns as well.

The email confirming your accepted application will be sufficient to show in the dashboard while waiting for delivery

Avoid cities requiring it. If you need it, apply online and you can use the confirmation email whilst waiting for physical delivery

I have just driven back from Spain through France and around Paris. Sticker arrived ion my return. It’s a mystery to me as to where you can and cannot drive these days. Couldn’t find a definitive map of restrictions anywhere so basically, I avoid cities totally these days and enjoy the countryside, small villages and coastal areas. The loss of any city access is only a benefit to my lifestyle.

Absolute rubbish you can go threw Rouen as long as you don’t go into the town centre it’s self and why would you do that if your heading north!!!!!

Can I drive through Rouen without a crit air sticker?

The certificate you receive relates to the vehicle's Euro emissions standards. Even those with a 100% electric car need to display the sticker. Drivers heading to Paris, Rouen, Strasbourg, Toulouse, Montpellier, Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble, and several other cities, risk the fine if they don't display one.9 Aug 2023

No way to avoid it if you do the easterly route through Rouen, namely the A28 then the D6015.
