Crit’air mandatory in Caen and Le Havre

It just amazes me the lengths some people will go to to avoid splashing out €5 or so . . .
I do better than "avoid splashing out €5". I avoid the area in my Euro 4 which goes one better than than €5 expenditure even though I could lawfully travel there with the sticker. I just want to avoid the risk of accidentally finding myself in this or some other more restrictive zone courtesy of a diversion or the like.

P.S. I once had the experience in the UK of heavy delays and being diverted off the M60 because of someone threatening suicide off a bridge. I picked up 3 penalty points via a speed camera on an unfamiliar road in consequence!!! Hence my caution! If diverted in similar fashion and I have not registered there is no way an ANPR camera can lead to a ticket and if stopped by a gendarme I can explain that I have been diverted onto that road.

I think you will find that it is the volume of traffic which is critical. There is clearly a much greater density in urban areas than in the countryside.

It’s still a pay to pollute tax…

I agree that in many countries it is, but some countries, e.g. Germany, just forbid polluting vehicles to enter their zones.

London LEZ ar £300pd, for non-compliant vehicles over 3500kg is the worst emissions tax I know!

Oh so without registering they do know where to send the fine!!!
And of course you maybe should not have been speeding anyhow. All the diversions you take to avoid the €5 for the badge may possibly be much more spent on fuel! Logic there somewhere?

You know what? My bike trip in May, I am going to wing it and up their stupid anti- tourism crap.🤣👍👍

Unless I did something wrong I couldn’t get an emissions sticker for our 55 plate Transit when we were in Germany.
If this is the same with France it’s going to restrict our choice of ferries.

Your first sentence does not make any sense. The penalty points were in the UK on my way back from work to a rehearsal (The clue is in the reference to the M60 for those more than half awake) and of course they knew where to find me. I note the glee in your response.
The 2nd is a tad sanctimonious! Do you never speed? The tailback caused by the jumper was over 7 miles long. Many thousands of people were seriously inconvenienced by being diverted off the M60 on the approach to Manchester from over the Pennines in evening rush hour. I was seriously late for a rehearsal in Preston and keeping people waiting.
Your third sentence shows how little you understand of my motives. I do not mind spending a bit more on fuel to save somebody's lungs. If some young person avoids lung cancer in later life because I and others have used a few more litres of fuel that is fine by me. (I would certainly prefer to do that rather than spend another £30-50k for a Euro 6 van which will spend most of the time sat on my drive and may well prove less reliable). So, to be clear, I would rather use a few more litres to avoid pollution build up than pay €5 for a licence to pollute!! That is my logic. Any problem with that?

You are so totally right on every point Sir. Apologies - not.

You should be able to get class3 I believe, although a friend of mine with a 'van the same age as yours somehow got a class4!
If applying on-line use the berlin.de website.

3 points in the UK is just not paying attention.

Germany is not that strict, our first van a 2008 Euro 4 van had the same emissions sticker as our current 2024 Euro 6AD van.

It's only £100/day for Euro 4 PHGV but still doesn't feel like a bargain ☹️
