Could cycling slow the ageing process?

And of coarse another plus for the rest of us. Old guys wearing Lycra don't half improve your sense of humour, promoting increased exercise for the 'fall over laughing' gland. (y)

He who laughs last laughs longest......

I thought you Lycra loving lot had a "Secret Group forum" on here somewhere!! is there a shortage of subscribers? or are you missing the banter:D:whistle:

Once had the "pleasure" to escort a Squaddie to the Mind doctor (can't spell Psychiatrist) and because the Fella was sometimes violent we (the escort) stayed in the next room, but the adjoining door to the Quack's room was open .
After an 1/2 hour of stuff that went completely over our heads the Quack started on the Word association "test"
"Say the first word that comes into your head when I say- - - - - )

"Bank"- - "Robbery!"
"Female"- - "Nookey!"
Bicycle"- - "Bollacks!"
"Now that's interesting!, has the shape of the Scrotum which is similar to the outline of the Bicycle , anything to do with your answer?"
"No! to me riding a bike is bloody hard work! and I say Bollacks to hard work!"

The Squaddie was medically discharged later on, can't remember the medical name for what he had, but it was described to us as "Malaria on the brain"

So there you are! Ride a bike! you are a Nutter! You die! (Oh yes! You WILL still die!)

Me in Lycra? Not a pretty sight.

That's why I cycle blindfolded. Interesting experience!

When I was in my teens and early 20's I used to race most week-ends and during the week in the summer and was a pretty good hill climer, now, embarassingly, even the slightest hill really hurts. Thank god for electric bikes. LOL
Can cycling lengthen your life? Dunno, in moderation may be, Sadley too many of my contemporaries who continued to race are no longer around or have pretty serious health problems, it makes you wonder if long term intensive training really is good for you.

Well having read the post and comments. I decided yesterday to get on my mountain bike and go down to the local workingmans club to renew membership. The club was open but not taking subs untill the night session. I road the bike home and felt chuffed that i had done just under 3 mile. Down to the club [in the car] at the night time and paid subs. I know your thinking "whats this old git going on about" well this morning I woke up and my A$$E HOLE was killing me I thought someone was sticking needles in me. Mrs. Tick beeing the wonderful wife she is has a Quick look at my A$$E HOLE and says your "all bruised."The morale of the story is "keep fit on your bike but make sure you have a well "Padded Seat" fun!!! fun!!! fun!!!

joices:

1: change the seat

2: get over yourself :) The more you do the quicker you will get used to it

3: wear lycra

Not having fallen by the wayside and still dedicated to my New Years resolution I am now down half a stone and riding the bike every day. Now over the sore ass and legs and starting to feel good. Bikes are the best it just takes a bit of pain before you start to enjoy them. My only motor is calorie driven.;)

Thanks Judge, I must say I am beginning to feel better than I did but it dont come overnight. I'm fortunate in having my lovely lady who is attending weight watchers and unbelievably keen, we are both fed up with feeling sluggish and uncomfortable so giving it a good go. She has also lost the same as me so a bit of competition involved. ;)

It doesnt come quickly. We used to avoid hills like the plague for the first couple of years of cycling. We dont worry now. If its too steep get off and push but you will be surprised how easy they become if you keep at it. Cheaper than the gym and your outdoors...:D

I dont think an E bike twelve years ago would have changed me from a doddering old fart who struggled to walk 200 yards and had not been on a cycle for twenty years into what i can achieve now. Dont get me wrong i still hurt like hell when we get back from a long cycle or walk but hey i am mobile and quite fit for a 70 year old. Every one to there own...BUSBY

They reckon a tour de france takes a year off the competitors lives...:)

I'm not surprised! its incredible, but so are some of these triathlons

Broken Link Removed

I started cycling again 3 years ago but unfortunately due to a chest complaint I cant cycle during the winter but come summer anything from 20 to 50 miles two to three times a week. Solved the winter problem by buying a turbo trainer.
Encouraged by my doc to continue cycling as it helps with respiration. My posterior shouldnt get sore when the good weather arrives. I'm 73 and I'll keep going as long as possible.

I reckon, given the attitude of many motorists towards cyclists, bicycling could speed up the aging process totally (to instant death)!

JJ

not a bit of it! It keeps you very alert or otherwise your a road death statistic. Thats what the reserch in link was about, how cyclists have to use their brains more to survive.....

I know cycling is good for you as you get old but how about mountaineering??????? Did anyone see Sir Chris Bonnington climb The Old Man of Hoy on the telly last week.??? What a remarkable man,,,80 years of age and still doing climbs like that.Shows you that you need to stay active.....BUSBY:):)

I see you're all trying to sneak a cycling thread in behind Tootles back:sneaky: I'm gonna tell him!! As far as all these dangerous activities are concerned I view it the same as "A good deal" its probably too good to be true ! "If it looks Dangerous It probably is"

In UK yes but its a much different attitude in France and Spain..BUSBY....

Don't know if it helps at all ... I suffered for about thirty years quite seriously with a sort of Menieres Disease and Labrynthitus... they were always sending me for brain scans to make sure no tumours etc... Then about ten years ago I was at hospital and a young girl physiotherapist put me through Hell bringing on attacks .. I had to go back every week for a couple of months. . . touch wood I havn't had a serious attack since.

I am not asking you what your balance problem is, but just saying keep options open and look at NEW treatments as sometimes something comes up which may be of help to you.... Good luck. It can be horrible and it does debilitate you in more ways than people realise. :)

Yep I have Meniere's as well unfortunately, went undiagnosed for years but now under the UK expert in the field proff Luxon at UCL. Was there a few weeks ago and had the Epley manovere which I think you mean...

I learnt a very good and safe alternative method that I can explain if interested. Best control is to cut salt from diet, it's diffucult but achievable with care, and makes all the difference to be honest. The misery it caused me....reason I retired at 57, took it very badly, as loved my well paid work. But at 62 have learnt how to deal with it and now not as resentful, could be worse, could be in a box! :)
