Cost of running Alde heating comparison Gas or Electric

I should have made it clear. The c£5 per day quoted in #14 is purely for electric services I.e lighting, cooking, and kitchen appliances. There are only the 2 of us. Heating and hot water is by an oil fired boiler ( we don’t have gas out in the sticks). We are currently using c40ltrs heating oil per week. So paying £3 per day EHU when on a site ain’t a bad deal in the winter. ;)
I sort of gathered that was electric only, our van on electric made a difference of around £5 to the smart meter over a 24hour Period but now running on LPG just for a cost comparison although the weather has warmed up this morning 🙂

I think for us this is bit low at £5 a day for 1kw elec set at 10 degrees as I have ours set at 7 degrees and yesterday alone it used 18.49kw which is over £6 and I turned it off for a good few hours in the afternoon. I am monitoring my EHU constantly now as I wanted to know what it was costing to heat it. Here's yesterday's 24 hours and as you can see I turned it off for a few hours in the afternoon. My system at 1kw won't go above 7 degrees currently although it is bloody cold here at -5.
We are going away in our ours in less than a week so we want to start putting bedding etc back in so that cost is going to rise as well as our will need to be warmer.

Ours is drained down but the heating is a closed system so still can be run.

That’s a clever little device Zac

Wow I hope that cost doesn’t continue long Jock as it would equate to around £250 a month.
Unfortunately, it is what it is Paul, with the way energy prices are going, and to get dearer next year again apparently.
Those costs are with the new boiler installed recently, which is much more efficient (up to 30%), than the previous one of 40 plus years. :Eeek:

The standing charges are £0.27p and £0.45p respectively, per day.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

its a shelly device, have them fitted in quite a few area's of my place including sockets / fuse board etc. I also have a smart meter which i have full access to the data (the parts the gas companies have access to) so i can see exactly what being used and when ie currently / 30mins / hourly / daily / weekly / monthly / yearly
We are heavy electric users as i have a lot of server equipment running but i have been trying to cut back and the only way to do this is to know which pieces are using the most. :)
This is the one i use Here i also use Home Assistant but its not really required if you just want to see what your meter is doing and get access to the same data the big companies do. There is an app which will work with this or without as it hooks into your smart meter directly called Bright (its free also). This gives you a lot of information too and is a lot better than the smart meters the big companies supply.

Ours is on a 16amp EHU, its also handy when we go away as i can leave the lead outside on our drive but turn off the power to it remotely with the shelly

Does anyone know if an inline meter is available for a motorhome, something like you might plug into the ehu point in your van then the cable goes into that so you can monitor your daily usage

Also we got our first winter energy bill for our house the other day and it equalled out at £16.86 per day 😱🥲

see my post as thats exactly what I do :) although this one goes into my 16ehu box which the motorhome lead plugs into, its very accurate as well. its inside this (see pic)

1kW of electricity at the capped price costs 34p. 1 litre of propane gas at 80p contains 7.08kW of heat so 1kW of gas costs just over 11p. Even allowing for 90% gas efficiency to 100% electricity the gas is a lot cheaper.

when we get back i think i will be using the gas rather than the electric to heat ours, we would have to add the cost of travelling to get the gas refilled which is a 30mile round trip but i still think would work out a lot cheaper. I suppose it depends on how long the gas is going to last as well, we have 2 x 11kg gaslow tanks.

Can you please tell me what fits in where, i’ve just been onto the Shelley website as well and can’t see anything I could plug inline between the ehu cable and moho

Am I being a bit dim 😉

We have had 2 MH with Alde heating, both expensive to run and both absolutely useless and slow.

Hi Phil
hope you and yours are keeping well

basically i’m wanting something so I know exactly what i’ve used each day whilst on a campsite, a few of the sites we stay on in Spain allow us 4kw per day (acsi) and we could see the meter, recent upgrades done and the meters are now online in the office so we’ve no idea what we would be using.

Do you have a link to yours mate

cheers and merry christmas

Al

On a recent trip up in the Lake District, with the gas heating on most of the day, we went through 1 x 11Kg Gaslow cylinder in 4 x days.

HTH,

Jock. :)

This is our first experience with Alde heating, and we think it is wonderful and very efficient, albeit more gas hungry than the Truma C6002 blown air system.

Sorry it not a plug inline but its a device that sits inside the fuse box which then takes the feed from source (230v feed) to the 16amp plug which you plug in your motorhome lead to like in my pic. This is the device Here sorry if wasn't clear but hopefully this will assist, shelly then provide an app where you can monitor it from and if have control over it if you want.

So am I correct in saying that if I could get to the back of my ehu socket or before the consumer unit in the motorhome and connect this device, it’s then inside away from the weather and I can monitor what the motorhome is using each 24hrs m on my iphone.

If so that would be perfect
thanks

I use this,

It's all wireless and consists of a split clamp hall effect ring that goes around the live cable that you want to measure, this is attaches to a battery powered box that transmits wirelessly to a the indoor unit which I have two of so one inside the van and one outside where I use the inverter/induction hob for cooking outside, I have the sensor ring around the live from the inverter but you can fit it around any live cable that you want to measure, there are various displays and you can put energy costs in and get daily use figures.

Couldn't agree more. Mine has more radiators than our bungalow and has underfloor. It's brilliant - I'd never go back to blown air.

I'll def look into that Martin as it looks painless

How far can the display be away from the transmitter before losing connection do you know, i'm thinking at home as well now btw

I have had no problem in our van with the sensor in the electric locker just before the garage door and it works as far forward as the dashboard, not tried any further but they are designed for home use really.

Really, this is our first van with Alde, lovely heat, we do have a separate Truma E2400 which heats quickly but I think on gas the Alde heats up not too bad time wise.

Plus it heats the double floor, shower tray, every external locker, toilet compartment, garage the lot.

That looks a great piece of kit Martin but can you clarify whether the daily use data is actual usage or ‘average daily’ usage? Their website/data sheet seems to suggest that it’s the average daily use which would be somewhat less useful than actual daily usage.
