Cost of hook up

I have definitely learnt from this that my 3 way fridge uses far more electricity than I expected and we will be using it on gas at our next metered site 👍
The bigger 3 ways use even more power than noted, so if you have a newer van with the tall fridge it's double the usage of my small dometic too.

Depends on the sites price. Come next year, given commercial rates are lower than domestic now expect fixed rates of 25-27p (or lower if the site is on a more flexible tariff). At that price I'd use the electric on fridge, just not at 50p+

I am looking a a CL in Fowey, never been there looks a pleasant spot for a few days. Now without EHU the hard standing pitch is £18.00 per night. But with EHU it is £36.00! !!!
They say that the price includes 15KWH of leccy. By my matriculation they are charging £1.20 per KWH. This is the most expensive hook I have seen. No doubt it will be said that they have included the daily standing charge, so 5 pitches plus owner divided by 6 would be a fair assumption of the division of the standing charge. . I am going to contact them to find out if the pitches are metered and at what rate. WTS

I suspect they will have been caught out by the ‘we have paid for it we will use it’ types

It would be scarily easy to use £1 / hour in normal use, add in abuse and the £18 may not cover it, even though it is possibly the highest charge in the country . At least the £18 pitch fee is reasonable 👍

It will be interesting to hear what the site owner says

Pitch fee of £18 is good but £18 for electric is taking the micky.

No doubt the fairy lights all over the caravan awning and the big fan heaters outside have not helped.
I had two nights on a metered CL last week. Our MH is 8.5m with Alde, big fridge freezer and used microwave, bill £3.00 per day at 47p . Next time I would put the fridge on gas to check the difference.

Fridge will use about a litre a day so about £0.80 to £1.00 a day if using LPG depending where you buy your gas.

I'm the one that spent £150 on EHU (at 77p kWh) during my first week here.
It is the 3 way fridge & heating which was eating it.
Since switching both culprits to gas during the hours when I'm up I'm down to about 2-3kWh a day

Mind you, I have no idea how much gas I'm using. Poor eyesight means I can't read the Gaslow gauges:blush:

Just heard back from the CL , yes they had been caught out by people who don’t like to come back to a cold van, leave the heating on all day and constant hot water. So realistic rates have been agreed. 😊

Well you just wouldn’t would you👍 But there will always be some that will..but not us. 😊👍

As others have said fridge will use 4kw in 24hrs. When in europe and have 4kw included we use fridge on electric during day then turn to gas at night, never go over our 4km consumption then.

But pleased with gas consumption, refilled from empty , had 6 nights in cold weather with Alde set for comfort and not used first 11kg bottle 👍
Interesting as I have not used gas only on Alde as I was told it burns ( sorry 😉) a lot.
Will give it a go and see how it goes

Recently stayed on a CL price usually £22 pn inc elec. owner has fitted meters and dropped price to £19 pn. You check meter reading on arrival and again on leaving and calculate what you owe on the given price per unit. Interestingly we used £3 per day running 3way fridge, heating, toaster, kettle etc. the owner told me that some people are extravagant using up to £16 per day. My conclusion is they must be running 2kw fan heaters almost around the clock!

To correct my previous post it’s me that put in extravagant. NOT the side owners!

God knows what these peoples house bills are like.

I am an electrical engineer . I get a little fed up with people who say the meters are fixed or going to fast to make the site owner a bit of eaxtra money .
In reality it is very difficult if not impossible to make any adjustments to modern digital kwh metres. You would have to be a very good electronics engineer to be able to modify the meter.

We have just returned from Spain where the allowance on the pitch was 4kwh per day any extra being charged at 0.4 euros . I think this is extremely fair, we were emailed the pitch metre reading on the day of our arrival and again on the day we left .

Having just spend the weekend one of the club sites I only wish the two main clubs would get all the pitches on the sites metered. With modern metering technology it is easy for the reception on the site to monitor the usage of each pitch . until this happens there is no incentive for anyone to save electricity . We have all seen the heaters in awnings being left on all night.

Our friends have just returned from a site in Scotland where you paid £10 upfront to be put on a card inserted into the meter , if it ran out you put some more on , when you left you were paid back any credit left on the card.

I can see why they don't. Meters for all pitches would be a huge outlay (likely min of £30 a meter) -> and they can't charge beyond what they pay for the electric so it will be a non-profit making endeavour.

Equally at same time wholesale prices are falling through floor (its' about half for commercial use this year for a fix as it was this time last year, and the trend is down not up). And the long-term governement price predictions from the ofgem people it is likely to continue falling in the long-term (with likely a short increase next year) as the wholesale CfD contracts limiting wind to a peak of 5p a unit come live in 2024-5 timeframe on the windfarms built in last few years.

Would you invest in something when it may become so cheap than EHU for £5 extra would cover ~ 50 units a night.?

The guy on the site we stayed at said the EHU were due to be renewed anyway so he put meters in then. He thought it would take 2 yrs to get the money back but his elec costs have reduced so much it could only take a year.

Reading this post make me wonder if it’s worth me replacing the 240volt element on my 3way fridge , I think it’s faulty, still have to do more checks, at £70 and all the hassle of taking the fridge out.

You should be able to replace it via the bottom vent.

It wouldn't be worth it for us, don't even bother plugging in when on free Aire with free EHU.

I would be nice but Fridge would need pulling out so far so I can get to the terminals on the controller.
