Cost of Electric at Chester Food Festival

This was our first time out in the new Moho and our first funster meet last year.i found it to be a great taster, nice stalls a fabulous city with some very nice folk to talk to and ask advice about moterhoming.
Yes it was we,t yes we were pulled out by a tractor but it was a lovely few days unfortunately we will be in sunny Spain this year.

I had to be towed ON as well as off this year but I'll still be going next year(y)

I'll book late as usual and I'll only stay for a couple of nights, Friday, Saturday - I don't go for the food, just the fun

..............If you need leccy take your own generator.................:whistle:

well everyone is entitled to their opinion... But in the interest of balance, I have been to all but 1 of Carols Chester meets, I think I have been in -20 blizzards, woken by train works that sounded like aliens been towed off probably every time.

No amount of money paid could buy the fun I have had over those years. Chester is a fantastic city and being in the company of friends be it roast dinners with @Silkcut1105 or watching @Jim fall asleep in an Indian restaurant or being sat outside the smoke house with about 7 dogs enjoying a dinner. Not bad value for the giggles I have had over the years.

Won't be attending this year though as Easter is late which means I might trip off somewhere further afield.

£145.00 divide by 4 nights = £36.25. You could get a 5 starr site for that.
I dont think you can over Easter.
Why such negativity?
Don't take the electric. Lots manage without.

No one can judge the weather. After a couple of years flooding at Peterborough, this year was stunning. My face got sunburnt.
Equally, have sat outside in the afternoon sun at previous Chester meets, sipping cider. @Sonja, she made me do it! Lol

That's a really helpful post John not, Easter is a lot later this year so they could have good weather, the electric is expensive because they have to hire generators in. The price for for 5 days over Easter is very reasonable if you don't have the electric and most these days can cope with out electric.
There are new marshalls a little support would have been more helpful.
Well that has done it for me, noisy generators 24/7 little wonder Jim fell asleep in the restaurant..:)

In one respect Chocy boy has a more than valid point. If you want electricity then no matter where you go I have never yet seen a charge of more than £5 a night, so by my reckoning Chester electric is expensive.

It’s then down to that concept that is sometimes difficult to get agreement on, personal choice and the ability if you have it to pay over the odds for something you want. Often you get at least a half dozen posts off people who say I wouldn’t pay that, or you can get this off fleebay from China for a fiver.

Then you get those one offs, that’s the cost and that’s it, and Chester electrics is one of those.

Last year, electrics to quite a few and the marquee was saved by Swansea boy and one other I can’t remember sorry, and a bread tray I carry that managed to raise the distribution unit out of the water. We were one unit that benefited from that piece of handy work.

I think we have been to four now, two wet (and wet really means wet) and two fairly dry, including the train monsters.

Even in the wet ones there have been sufficient dry periods to have a great time.

Because it’s late and other personal reasons we will be giving it a miss this year, but we will be back.

A few practical hints for those attending, some precautionary.

1. Take wellies
2. Be prepared if on electric to lose it at times
3. The nearest toilets are near the generator, they apparently need electric.
4. Plan your follow on requirements carefully, you may not be able to do the just in time ferry arrival you have booked by planning to leave at 7am if you need a tow off.
5. The tow off tractors are very good, you will have to wait, and they only start about 9am.
6. Most attempts to drive off on your own, not all but most, usually result in an axle deep bog down, and a plowed mud effect that everyone else then has to avoid to get off.
7. Check you have your towing eye with you before you leave home, and that you know how to install it.
8. As well as Chester, there are good bus and rail services to places you my find more difficult taking a motorhome.
9. The electric train service to Liverpool is good, and it may be the time to visit this great city. Not sure what it has as attractionsthis at Easter next, but now is the time to check and book some if you need to (e.g. the terracotta warriors last year had to be booked).
10. If you like real ale, Chester is one of the best venues in the country (as is Liverpool city centre).

I am sure I have forgotten lots.

Often when people know the cost of everything but the "value" of nothing they complain about the "cost" The Caravan and Motorhome Club charge £36 a night to park in a car park at the NEC No facilities as such, grey and black hoisted up and dumped into a tank, a couple of taps and some water bowsers dotted around.

But try and book a couple of nights at short notice!

I have not been to Chester, but every single glowing report I have heard about it makes me want to go, everyone, and I mean everyone that I have every spoken to about it raves about it.

I don't like Coronation Street, so I don't watch it, it's simpler that way I find!

Is it really that expensive when you look at hire costs for a Generator, I have found 60kva at £120 per day, if that's 5 days hire plus £200 delivery and then fuel tank cable and distribution board hire plus fuel comes to close on £1000.

I make 60kva around 250 amps and if all customers want 10 amps you might put 25 possibly 30 if you think they won't all be using maximum at the same time, so that would be between £8-10 per day, then of course they are running this as a business and they have staff to pay for looking after the equipment and then as a business it would be prudent if they made a profit so it all starts to add up and you might double that to £16-20 per day.

I think I will take my own condensed sunshine along in some old batteries and then if they run low I will top them up from my sunshine collector, condensers on the roof.

Can I thank all of you so much for the support for the effort I have put in over the years it means so much, I have had some amazing support of so many and my hero @swanseajack13 who came to the rescue in the marquee with lights and mats we all made the best of the hard parts and really had some great times, and your support means so much, and although I have now handed the reins over to younger hands I am looking forward to this year's meet.

There currently appears to be very high resistance to positivity being generated on this thread. Though this does alternate causing negativity through impedance.

Watt a shame;)

Correct - I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about:cautious:

I believe generators are banned this year, but will check

There is some useful information in posts in this thread. Thank you. I hope you won’t mind if I copy and paste some of your ideas to the main Chester booking thread so this year’s Funsters can benefit from it?

So where is this expensive power coming from if there is a no generator rule..
Nice catch! I think you know what I meant, and am waiting a response!:p

I have now had a response from CamperFest andcan confirm that generators are not allowed on site.

If an individual has a medical reason for needing one please contact me by PM and I will endeavour to make arrangements

We cannot make it this year, but I would go just for the Goat Curry in the Food Fest and a beer in The Boot. Plus the marquee of course

No, no, no... don't tell the world and his wife about The Boot!

Just to clarify, The Boot sells awful beer at inflated prices and is tucked away up a very smelly alleyway.

OK? Stay away from The Boot!

(Phew, I think that'll work :-) )

Sorry Janine, just copied this to the main thread.

Don’t worry though, I have contacted the landlord and suggested that he increased prices more to keep the crowds down for you

Whilst writing , I also gave him your feedback about his smell. I expect he will be in touch soon :eek::D

Funny :-)

I can give you a list of other fabulous pubs in Chester - it would make the ultimate pub crawl but don't ask me to lead it :-)

To be fair to the OP I had already decided not to attend due to the EHU costs (I now know why) which I thought excessive and the idea of being towed on or off. Sorry about that, just that I like things simple.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Shrewsbury Fireworks rally but these were not a problem there. I am always looking at the Rally schedule and will attend some next year but not this one.

Yes please for the list.

Any volunteers to lead the pub crawl?

The Boot is ok but the best pub is Harkers Bar on the canal bank just off City Road.

Thanks Carol, I should have said swanseajack13, I don’t know were Swanseaboy came from in my post, must give those marbles a shake:doh:.

Ooooo...haven't found that one! Must put it on the list. We loved Telford's Warehouse a bit further along the canal.

Old Harkers Arms is a Brunning & Price pub http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/harkers/

If you like Telfords you'll love Harkers good beer and food in a very friendly atmosphere, not as open as The Armoury which I'm certain you will know.
